Thank you so much for this, this has to be one of the best tutorials I've seen in a really long time.... it's an amazing stepping stone for beginner/intermediate guitarists.
i also had a question, if i’m going to be playing lindsey’s songs with lots of pull/bending and a rock type sound what strings would you recommend for her style of music? i’m sort of a beginner still i’ve been playing for 7 months but i’m just not sure what strings would sound / work best on my squier strat. lmk thanks! :)
Sarah Fuentes most strings you buy will be able to handle the amount of bending in snail mail or other indie type songs perfectly fine. I personally use 10 gauge elixir nanoweb strings on my electric guitars. It just matters what you’re comfortable with. With electric guitars, your string choice really doesn’t impact the sound at all.
***PLEASE READ, DONT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO YOU*** Really appreciate this lesson but wanted to make sure people are careful. In using poor technique and bending my wrist to play the bass notes and riff simultaneously like in the video I pinched a nerve. I havent been able to play for weeks and am seeing a physio. Please be careful and take lots of breaks/stop if its uncomfortable. I didnt even notice I was doing any damage, I was having a blast. Now I am having to call in replacements for my bands and my university music studies are being affected. Like I said it was my poor technique not the fault of the lesson but please be wary. My hands are massive and I have a huge reach but I still injured myself. Look after yourselves people and try to get a bass player to do the low part instead.
Sorry to hear about that! :( I hope you start improving soon. It’s definitely a mammoth stretch, +1 for everyone being careful and not doing anything that’s causing harm to themselves. It’s just a song
Anon I’m doing that one eventually for sure. She uses a jaguar, so it sounds close just because it’s a single-coiled fender. For snail mail stuff I just run t through a compressor on a pretty bright setting, with the pickup selector in position 2 & tone all the way up
I use a Warden from earthquaker but for stuff like this you’d probably be just as well off with an sp compressor that costs a good bit less. I’ve seen those used for some awesome prices
I am tuned to open D tuning and I can’t seem to get the song to sound right. It seems as if both of the D strings (E string tuned down to D and the D string) seem to be a little sharp compared to how they sound in your video. Any recommendations?
Depending on how the capo is placed it may tug some strings out of tune if you put it on after tuning. Maybe try placing the capo on the 2nd fret, and then tuning to (E B E G# E G) instead of tuning to DADF#AD and then putting the capo on. Just to clarify, you aren’t tuning to different notes than in the video, just tuning after you’ve already placed the capo on so the notes are adjusted for the capo. This way it should definitely sound in tune. Let me know if that doesn’t work and I’ll brainstorm
