In this lecture, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges will examine how America has devolved, economically and politically, into a Third World country and the role that inverted totalitarianism plays in consolidating the control of rapacious elites over our political and economic systems. He will also discuss the implications of the current arrangement for the world and what are the steps necessary for the masses of people in this country to begin to push back.

We need more people like Chis Hedges who truly understands this system and how corrupt it is. He also CARES about LIFE and Others welfare- which Corporate Economics does Not. They only care about their own self interest. Not common interest.

My guess is that Hedges will be Chomsky's intellectual and moral heir after he passes on. Both are deeply motivated by moral outrage and use their considerable intellectual capacity, erudition and eloquence to make very valid points with staggering emotional efficacy and impact.

I am a socialist, and I agree with you that there absolutely are strains of socialism that lead to dictatorship (Bolshevism, "scientific" socialism, utopian socialism, etc). These are called "socialism from above" ideas, and usually involve massive centralized state apparati. However, I am a Marxist anarcho-socialist, which is socialism-from-below, and focuses on direct democratic control by the people of all meaningful facets of public life. I think Hedges falls within that same tradition.

I'm a socialist, and I'll answer: Because I hold the right of the people to govern themselves as the chief virtue, the greatest good, the end to strive for. A people governing itself as a society, working for the benefit of that society. That is all that socialism is: the people governing themselves for their own benefit (as opposed to the benefit of capital, which is inherently corrupting and undemocratic). That is the chief principle of socialism, the rest are just details.

Any time I read or hear this man speak, I feel there are still people with the spirit and courage of Malcolm X. He is among the voice of reason, wisdom and compassion of our time. In this confusing terrain of disinformation and decadence, Mr. Hedges lives and see above the sound bites and constantly attempts to expose the fiction, hate and down right jingoism of the 1% in authority. Coroporatiion, the market and democracy are almost synonymus, and anything outside that is the dangerous enemy.

unchecked capitalism leads to the rise of a vastly rich class who in turn have the wealth and power to control governments..interests who make money out of war. Or environmental degradation. Interests, as he is saying, that are not in the best interests of their country, their fellow citizens or the planet. For this reason alone, civilised countries used to use tax to keep the wealthy from getting too powerful and laws to restrain them. Who now restrains Monsanto, for example? And their GMOs?

I can't believe that Guantanamo is STILL open. Even an "enemy combatant" should be told why he is being held and given some opportunity to explain himself. People call Obama a Liberal and a Leftist but he is so Corporate that he doesn't want to rock the boat or change the status quo. As an American and a middle aged Republican I almost cry when I see where our once great country is headed. Our Police have become militarized and the Patriot Act has vaporized our Civil Rights. What next??

I am grateful for Hedges' courage and intelligence. However, he's been too focused on mere protest. The co-op business movement is the focus needed, with Fannie Lou Hamer's Farm Co-op a fine bookmark for Rev MLK's Montgomery boycott, Malcolm X's Islamic roots in economic self-reliance, and the Afro-Am Fed of S Co-ops, member of the US ncba dor co-ops with the US Fed of Worker Co-ops and more.

All that is meant by "work for the benefit of society" is that instead of working for the benefit of the capitalists, who appropriate the vast majority of the value of the labor in the form of profit, workers make that surplus value. Further, work will be organized for social needs rather than the needs of profit, and will almost certainly mean less labor. One of those systems is clearly more "human" than the other. Capitalism is far more dehumanizing, and gives people less autonomy and agency

That's a pretty blanket sweep, excoriation of, not merely governmental policy, but of the very institution of government itself. My view is decidedly more balanced. My statement was that the market is influenced by forces outside itself, not really a controversial statement, you mentioned an individual, kudos, my post dealt with macroeconomics, individual success stories notwithstanding.
@jtatsiue
@jtatsiue 11 лет назад
Market forces aren't the only factors determining economic outcomes, government policy shapes the market, we've never had a pure laissez faire economy, government sponsored, wealth-building programs have aided and abetted the asset accumulation enjoyed by the 1% throughout US history. Since 80% of US private wealth is derived from inheritance and not through earnings or savings, it's clear that government assisted fortunes have helped create a plutocratic elite, not a meritocratic one.
@Meade556
@Meade556 11 лет назад
Actually the US Government through its policies made this entire thing we see around us possible, if you cannot see that you need to read more history. Property rights are not necessarily conducive to economic growth, it can help, but there are countries with strong property rights that have weaker growth than those without. Second there is no overspending, except on the Military, our federal government is appallingly paltry. Finally we're in a depression the government needs to spend.

One way to turn this philosophical perspective upside down is as follows: Either we succeed in our ability to outgrow and outsmart the physical limits of our Earth and its finite resources, or we face a certain demise at our failure to do so. So, in a way, either you believe in humanity and civilization, which has been a natural result, or don't. Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

But doesn't all capitalism commodify? Isn't that one of the central problems with capitalism? Hedges is not against capitalism per se; he's against corporate capitalism. But isn't this an issue of degree? Hedges is quite modest in his take on capitalism, I think. What does it mean to say that there are various 'versions' of capitalism? Isn't it rather that the different versions (corporate etc) are an attempt to manipulate CAPITALISM writ large? Maybe I'm wrong...I just don't get 'versions'

One of the few ways he lets himself down is to muddle his ideas with religion, It may be that this is what brought him to where he is but I would suggest he would do better to see how devisive it is. Either way..it takes faith to believe. He chooses to follow the examples of first and foremost Jesus Christ, Ghandhi, Mother Jones and so so many other leaders of the oppressed.

He's clueless. Human communities are ruled by the laws of Evolution. That's Genetics. The only way you can influence Genetic Selection - and thus shape behavior - is through controlling the Environmental Factors, like food and sexual partners. The US is crumbling because of its enormous deficit with Asia. As the Americans get poorer, they grow more dissatisfied. So the oligarchy has to either tighten its grip, or be swept away and lose its privileges. It's not the opposite. It's not because of the oligarchy's tightened grip, do the Americans grow dissatisfied, and as a result do they get poorer, and the US deficit with Asia does increase. I hope you'll understand one day, that this guy is just surfing the wave, proposing juvenile "only solution" - rebellion. Yeah right, look at him all dressed in Red White and Black - looking like a banker or politician, encouraging you to rebel against the bankers and politicians. Let him rebel first, let's see him not keeping his money in a bank account...
@EmpressLeana
@EmpressLeana 10 лет назад
criztu "Human communities are ruled by the laws of Evolution." What are you talking about? There's no more genetic selection amongst humans. "The US is crumbling because of its enormous deficit with Asia." The word you're looking for is debt. China and Japan only hold 15% of the US' debt. The US holds 89 cents of foreign debt for every dollar of US debt owned by foreign countries. I didn't even understand your sentence with all the negatives in it. Try getting to grips with reality first
@criztu
@criztu 10 лет назад
***** Evolution is ever more complex, lol. If you won't be able to raise your kids, and even if you'll be able to raise kids, if they won't be able to raise their own kids, and their kids in turn raise their own kids, and so on, your genes will be eliminated from the genetic pool, eventually. Evolution is a process over thousands of years and millions of individuals... if you think that just because you have antibiotics you've stopped Evolution, you're in deep error... The key word in the relations between the US and Asia, is deficit. No matter what US does, it needs Asia more than Asia needs US. The same thing happened to the Roman Empire, who was losing huge amounts of gold in the trade with Persia. Waging war against Persia was simply suicide, because it made it even more difficult to get the stuff they wanted from them. Same thing happens today with the US. They'd like to annihilate Iran, sure, but that would make it impossible for the US to get the stuff they get now from China, who needs oil from Iran. The only ways for US to end the deficit, is to either lower its wages to levels comparable to China, India and other cheap Asian labor markets, or to bring China India and other to the same level as US. Which would render US powerless to control the global economy through petrodollar. The US will go on the same path as the Roman Empire, only in shorter time span, as the world today spins way faster. Got it? The US doesn't lose jobs because Satan or the Klingon, but because the Americans buy stuff Made in China. If they'd boycott China, they'd have to buy 10 times more expensive stuff Made in US. Chris Hedges' notebook is Made in China. Chris Hedges' clothes are Made in China. Chris Hedges' glasses are Made in China Chris Hedges' website is hosted on a server Made in China. Chris Hedges' interview is recorded with equipment Made in China. Every. Fucking. Thing. Made in China. One has to be crazy to keep producing in Camden, NJ, US, when one can produce the same thing 20 times cheaper, in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Camden will become extinct if it won't be able to survive, because that's how the fcuking Evolution works. The Native American Nation who lived before the Europeans in the same spot, have long since gone extinct, and Chris Hedges doesn't fucking care. The Chinese don't fucking care about Chris Hedges and his Nation, either. Don't take this personally, I don't care if you understand Evolution or not.

The nature of capitalism is such that it drives investors to seek maximum returns on investment at minimum cost. The problem is that capitalism is strongly conformist; everyone tries to do the same with predictable result -- economic collapse. Capitalism should have been a failed experiment a long time ago, except for the fact that the government has been providing the role of the emergency room and keep it from going kaput at taxpayers' expense. In particular, without the nanny state provided by the government, corporate capitalism cannot go on.

He's not a libertarian. He's Chris. Why must you label all humans? Makes you feel more secure I guess, huh? Open your heart and mind. It's bliss

@@steppenwolf3252 You do realise that these are seven year old replies, which have lost their context when they changed the reply system, don't you? I would point out who I was responding to, but I can't remember, because it was seven years ago. It certainly wasn't Chris Hedges. Libertarians are still idiots, however.

Great speech. However I kept thinking to myself that sign-language interrupter must be having a hard time signing words like neo-liberalism, fascism, goldman sachz etc...lol

It is not a matter of adding something,nor humanising for justice and solutions,this merely only resets the start button back to the beginning of the same human catastrophes as before because nothing which originally set things into motion has, fundamentally changed. The original culprit the human nature must repeat history continuously until a sincere and spiritualy new nature appears and lives through us,from a much higher intelligent natural state.it can and must be done or all else is in vain.
