The red flag on this was when the seller said it needed shimming and he did not know how to do it, you know he has been messing with them and may have messed something up. when doing a fix like he does, you start with the most obvious things like getting fuel, spark and compression first. then you use those points to branch off. when fixing to resell, every hour into the bike eats away at profit. so maybe it just needed a spark plug and started right up and ran . you would be wasting all that time tearing down the carb for nothing . like they say , if it aint broke dont fix it lol. so no point in doing the carb until you know it needs it .

I learnt the hard way of never buying an 04-06 RMZ250 that the guy said he did the top end in and it won’t run. I bought one for $1000 guy said he did the top end in and was riding it,hit a jump and wiped out. Brought it home timing was off didn’t know to much the mechanics side of it or had the time.Took it into the dealer to look at and turned out I had to rebuild half the bike. Engine cases were even cracked so I lucked out owner of the shop had a parts one where he sold me for cheaper what was hard to find. $5500 to rebuild later dealer gave me a deal on parts and labour said would have cost $8000 to do normally. So when you said guy rebuild the top end I knew right away “Annnd here we go” 🤦🏻‍♂️
@thewizardoftech5075
@thewizardoftech5075 Год назад
thats a weird situation. if he was able to ride it and jump it. then it should have been in time. and if it somehow jumped time. then it should have just been top end work. and mechanics at dealerships rob you. over 5000 to rebuild an old rmz is insane. you can get complete bottom ends crank and all for 700 bucks or less with a little searching used . you could have bought yourself next to a brand new bike for 5500 . i would have sold the bike off for what you paid or a little less. and spent the quoted 5500 on something else. because with you 6500 into it after the rebuild it would have still been worth less then half of that . sorry that happened to you. if that situation happens again. and you have to go to a dealership. pay the fees to give it a once over, and get a quote. dont let them just get it working and bill you at the end . because there is no way to prove what they did in the engine, especially since they used , used parts .
@travisr896
@travisr896 Год назад
Yeah sorry I was telling the story in pieces the way he told me. He obviously didn’t start from the beginning to the end. My guess was he rode the bike the engine blew hitting a jump or after then he tried to rebuild the top end. But still doesn’t make sense cause he did try to rebuild the top end cause the timing was off. But yet the whole engine still had to be rebuilt. So how did the piston,valves and everything els get damaged? Cause if you rebuilt the top end you obviously do the piston and valves if needed.Plus the bikes not going to start with the timing off or rest of the engine damaged. Some how till this day it doesn’t make sense to me what really happened.

Same! Varying revs after a slow gentle warm up yes, constantly blipping the throttle is effectively momentarily throwing full load on all bearings and rings when it hasn't even had time to circulate oil to half those parts. I'm old school, run em in light throttle and low revs varying and gradually taking the revs a little higher at a time, NEVER labor the engine but, no big revs or big throttle, even just blipping.

The 2004-2006 Suzuki RMZ250's are good bikes and because between 2004 and 2005 Kawasaki and Suzuki formed a partnership the 2004-2005 Kawasaki KX250F is the exact same bike so there are lots of parts out there. Problem with the bike is that they actually crack the lobe on the Cam Covers and Snap Valves. But other then that they are great starter bikes for guys just jumping on 250 4-Strokes from 80's, 85's, Super Mini's and 125's. In California a good running 2004-2006 Suzuki RMZ250 will go for $700 to $1,500 on our local facebook marketplace (actually just looked and there are 4 between $700 and $1,700). How much do they go for in Oshkosh WI?
@jrminate
@jrminate Год назад
I remember the partnerships they had with various companies. I like suzuki myself, the suzuki engines were used in MANY different vehicles like the kfx400 atv and also used suzuki engines in some arctic cat atvs. Some of the dune / sand buggies you see around california and such with the motorcycle engines also use a suzuki engine.

Was it from 04-06? I thought it was just 04 cause the bike actually turned out to be a bad design between the 2. They were known for overheating sitting at idle so you had to put a aftermarket pro circuit or Boysen water pump cover on to fix the issue. You couldn’t change the oil on a factory cover water pump cause you had to drain out all the coolant to change the oil filter. Pro riders complained suspension was to soft while beginner riders said it was to stiff. Pro riders complained it didn’t turn as good as a Suzuki since Kawasaki did the frame and Suzuki did the Engine. The bottom of the Engine was designed deeper cause of Suzukis design so when you put the right amount of oil in it would still sit low on the site glass so people would think it’s low and end up putting way to much oil in. After that Suzuki and Kawasaki realized it was a bad designed bike cause they rushed it to get there first 4 stroke in 04 to compete with Yamaha like everyone else. The frame was still a steel frame while everyone else was aluminum. They did it backwards Kawasaki designed the frame and Suzuki the engine. Suzuki’s known for light handling sharp turning frames so Suzuki should of did the frame and Kawasaki the engine.Then they might have had a longer partnership.😂 I do have an 04 RMZ 250 though and it is a pretty interesting piece of history on the bike though. Hopefully one day it will be one of those bikes that goes up in value cause of the interesting history Kawasaki and Suzuki had with the bike.

Wow, great job on this one, Joe!!! What do you think was causing the hang up on the throttle before you took it apart?

Nice! sounds awesome. Love those Suzukis, reminds me of the DR250 I had when I was working in Zambia, built like a tank.

These early Suzukis/Kawasakis 4T were a disaster when they were new! I can’t imagine how bad they are used…

Great video. Also the best way to remove carby is the 4 bolts that hold rear subframe on. Remove them and entire rear of bike comes away. Piece of piss.

These old 2 strokes fall off the tree branches for you but none in western WA as all used dirt bikes are in woke California to bad. Iam glad you are saving all these old 2 strokes as there are way to many 4 strokes flooding the market its awful. 4 strokes always sound like they are broken & to boring to ride.
