@@UltraGamerAustin LOL! Sure it is. I mean they won't release a successor this year and dozens of A+ titles are on the horizon, but it's at "end of life." 🤣🤣
Even though you own the physical media, those cartridges have a lifespan. Either through physical use or their internal memory degrading. Being able to back this stuff up should be a consumer right and I'm glad more tools are being made to accommodate that. I agree that it's very expensive right now, but this is just the start of it. Here's hoping that this kind of preservation continues to be more accessible in the future.
@@grapehub1649 I mean, they likely will try. Capitalism's gotta capitalize. However I can't imagine the modding/preservation community is going to stop because of it
@@QuealbertaIf Nintendo was this consumer-ffriendly, piracy wouldn't even be an issue for them. Hell, even so much as an officially licensed multi-purpose emulator with games to buy and netplay with dedicated server tools to use would mitigate a lot of issues but Nintendo's never gonna stop being greedy
I like buying used copies of switch games and the example you provided us scared the daylights outta me, I don’t know if I’ll be able to buy used copies from now thinking that someone already ripped it and it’ll get me banned.
I mean realistically it's pretty unlikely anything would happen to you, but if you're really that paranoid, you could just permanently play in airplane mode and never get detected
Everything can be handled at low levels....when piracy gets too high, it degrades the platform. I have over $500 worth of digital eshop games, and even more physical games.......but I also have a modded OLED.....Nintendo doesn't have eshop refunds and you cant consume any other multimedia on it..........I use my modded oled to test games before I buy, gyro support or not, do i like the game, overclocking, display color tweaks for better outdoor viewing, higher framerates, android web browsing and multimedia (videos, youtube etc) support.......I buy games that I like that I've already tried out.....the problem is that most people will just use this freedom for free games.......if that gets out of control, the platform dies.
@@kninezbanks Not seeing the moral argument here. Are you saying that because Nintendo has a policy you don't agree with and find annoying, that makes it moral to pirate games?
I live in a country where a full modchip service for any model of NX would cost $25 or below excluding the SD card, whilst the MIG costs almost triple that amount and does practically nothing more than having all your games in a small cartridge instead of being in the same carrying case that we already have. Not to mention the amount of effort it would take to cycle through games, and the risks of having your NX banned
Holy the cost saving implications as a single father with two little gamers. I can now just buy one physical copy and just put my kids devices into airplane mode.
Please don't do this, the switch will store the telemetry data and upload it to nintendo servers once you connect it to the internet again, and you will be banned on both consoles. even resetting the consoles won't wipe the telemetry data
@@pi3.1415 Nintendo can ban you from using off-line games. Who cares about getting banned from their servers if you don’t play online Nintendo is a shitty ass company anyways
@@pi3.1415no it won’t 😂 maybe digital only games but even then I’m still not banned I was only banned twice once on Xbox 360 and once on ps3 but that was because I was doing some RTM on bo2 and GTA v but never on my switch or vita and even if it did they not my real accounts
@zsweetxdreamzz8224 trust me, you will get banned if you play the same cartridge on two different devices, even if one of them are not connected to the internet. as soon as you connect them both to the internet at all (doesn't need to be at the same exact time), both switch consoles will be banned from connecting to nintendo servers (which includes the eshop) because of nintendo's telemetry data system
I think my biggest reason for buying it was to have my all physical collection essentially digitally on my switch lite I use for travel, or the big reason is using the dumper to legally acquire roms without needing mods for use with yuzu on the steam deck
Nintendo is probably working on a firmware that detects Mig switch and/or changing how cartridges are encrypted/fabricated. So right know it can work with any game released on firmware 17 and down, but there's no guarantee it'll work with 18 and up. And they can force all devs to use new firmware for new games and updates. So this will be really interesting after some cat and mouse has been played by Nintendo and Mig Switch. Adding updates, DLCs and maybe mods to XCI is the number one feature I'd like to see coming, so if they ban the console, everything would still work offline.
This isn't just true, Nintendo already has secondary encryption systems. Presumably they'll roll out support and change how Game Cards are read in the coming months.
The fact that theres a chance to get banned just for buying an used game is truly scary. Edit: Dang i didnt think this was gonna get that much likes xD
From a preservation perspective i think the dumper isnt that bad of an idea. I mean we will never know how long those switch cartridges will still work. Awesome video as always jeff
Some people may not know this but inserting and ejecting a microSD many times can cause it to go corrupt. There is a reason why most retro handhelds have a shutdown menu option.
4:51 the reason why the MIG Switch is like this is because that idea simply won't work anymore due to code signing. While I'm not that knowledgeable on Switch specific security, assuming Nintendo is at least up to the bare minimum, they're likely signing all games with a private key, which the public doesn't have. Hence why you also can't boot homebrew applications, even ones that would run fine at user level as it isn't code signed. My best guess as to why that worked on the DS is the DS either didn't have code signing or it was weak and easily bypassed.
I should note that if the MIG Switch was targeting homebrew Switches specifically, then I believe this would work since the code signing enforcement would be disabled, but they want this to work on stock switches as well since the vast majority of normal users don't mod their switch as disappointing as it may be.
Yeah but it'd only work if you patched your switch with kip/sig patches (I think it's called that), so you'd be enabling pirate mode in order to play backups/homebrew, but with said patches you could just install them and be at the same risk of ban. Over all what they decided on is the only thing that makes sense, I think if the card had like a capacitive button on it that'd make it far more useful, as it is switching games like this is just bad IMO.
I'm one of the people who fits all the criteria for this. I have over 100 physical Switch carts. Some are Limited Run copies, some are imports, and others are just not as easy to find. I dont play online at all, and I rarely, if ever, buy used games. I just want a solution to be able to easily play backups so I can save all my games on a hard drive and not lose an expensive cart.
I genuinely hope that they start marketing this better as a legal backup of legally bought physical cartridges. I think it would be much easier for them to find places to distribute, and there are absolutely no vendors here that sell them, along with it also having less repercussions. I just want to be able to get a digital copy of the games I ALREADY OWN, without having to worry about cartridge wear & tear. Also, as you mentioned, I would love to be able to bring my entire library with me when I head somewhere, there's multiple games I play through at the same time, and worrying about have I lost my entire library that costs hundreds of dollars and with no backup is just more reason to not play my switch. If I had the peace of mind that I can play MY OWN games without fear of losing all of them just because I'm forced to carry it around, I would be much more likely to use my switch. On-top of that, I would be much more likely to root for Nintendo as they're giving me good value, but also respecting that my games are my own to do with, as long as it's nothing that causes them problems.
Must be a real NERD if you go on a travel and sit there playing NINTENDO games while everyone else is partying and embracing the scenery. Why TF would I waste my time playing that many video games? Just go live in cave and be a hermit with your precious games.
@@OkiDingoPlus how many games can you realistically beat while traveling? I usually just bring one RPG and a random action game in case I get bored of the RPG temporarily.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game Complete edition is so good, i recently got it on steam for about 5$ CAD. I loved it, and it is very truthful to the original comic, albeit having no dialogue or quite good cutscenes, the gameplay is good
I have one of those plastic little book things filled with Switch cartridges that I haven't even played just because I'm too lazy to dig it out and swap carts to play games. Much easier to just fire up a digital game. This is the main reason I've been far more into retro handheld emulators than any of my actual consoles lately. Part of me wishes they'd implement a ripping process to move games from the cart to the Switch itself similar to installing PC games back in the day where you'd need some sort of unique activation key or something.
Im SEVERLY worried about the used game market, now i have to adk the seller if they use a mig switch or even know what it is. Hopefully i dont need to and this thing doesnt go to main stream. I really rather buy used games, cuz im broke, but now this makes me fear alot. Like said earlier, hope this doesnt go to mainstream
@Playerz714 if the mig switch goes mainstream into the public, that's when I'll be worried because if it does people will think, "oh I can dump my own game and then I can sell my main one" which is why I'd ask the seller if they use the mig switch or not. Tho if it doesn't go big, I'll be fine
Again most people are not going to be dumping their games lol you think people are not just going to go online and download switch roms? It doesnt help you have to pay aan extra $60 for unreleased dumper yet@@Cupheadburndmyhousedown
this cart may have inadvertently helped Nintendo sell brand new games. If people start getting banned for playing pre owned games, then the only way they'll be able to buy games will be either through Nintendo digitally or by buying a brand new copy that Nintendo get paid for. Nintendo (and all devs) don't like the pre owned market as they get no money for re-sold games, so this could end up damaging that market
I think about a few things and recourse. If someone dumps a game and sells it on the used market, what happens to the person who buys the game? 1) I think Nintendo has a threshold for banning that includes X instances of a duplicate title key. So two might not meet that threshold. Lightning may need to strike twice just to be online with the person at the same time, on the same server? I just don't know what tech Nintendo uses to really ban* 2) If Nintendo WERE to band your console along with the other party (2 instances of the same game), just take them to small claims court and bring your copy of all your games and ask for damages and loss of use. 3) If your copy was RAMPENTLY pirated and sold to you, then the same action (#2) would apply and I suspect Nintendo would buy you a new copy directly or through settlement, payment, and/or expectation that retail original copy is destroyed to prevent continued bans and continued litigation with you. 4) If you don't have access to small claims in your state, then you would have to hire an attorney :( OR AG would get involved. *I suspect at some point an Attorney will get involved and a class action would start. Through discovery, Nintendo would need to publicly disclose HOW they ban consoles and detect duplicate copies. At some point if this banning became widespread for the used market, Nintendo might be forced to disable banning based on duplicate title keys since they would have no reliable way to ban without effecting legitimate consumers. Sidenote: My worry is really about the Switch 2 and if my old games will work on the Switch 2 and if this new backup will effect the backwards compatibility and if this banning will extend to the Switch 2. WORSE case is Nintendo drops all physical media from the Switch 2. Gosh I hope not. I like to own all my games so I can sell/buy/trade. One you go digital your rights evaporate on some levels.
Very informative, you have laid out the answers to all the questions I had for this flash cartridge. Thank you. I will probably stay on the fence on this thing for now, I will wait a while for improvements. I also didn't like that push the cart back and forth to switch the game.
I find it very alarming that the very existence of this chip could "poison" the second-hand game market. When cheaper clones of this chip come out and the chip becomes widespread this could become a serious problem even for people who have no interest in this chip...
This might be a dumb question for yall but why not just buy the online version instead of game cartridge to avoid this whole situation? Is there a difference between the 2 versions?
Given the fact that this essentially has created used game "mine bombs" uh I hate this thing. They were so focused on whether or not they could. They didnt stop to think if they should. And ontop of all this nintendo probably sees this as an absolute win. Now a good portion of folks are probably paranoid and now that garuntees more folks will be buying new games instead of used. Nintendo already doesn't loke the used game market so this only helps them out.
Draw back for this is for when people would sell their original copy and forget they have it on the flashcart only to then end up getting their Switch banned because the both the original and backup would be played at the same time.
You're not fooling me. I know exactly why you have 4 copies of the game. So you can have different seasons and hemispheres in the game so you can catch all the bugs and fish and have access to literally all the exclusive items in the game. Worth it.
I did buy one along with the dumper. Mainly for 2 reasons. 1. Dumping my roms so I can play on other devices or play mods (CURRENTLY KAPUT) 2. Potentially playing my Switch library on the future Switch 2 without wasting the cartridge slot or storage space. First one is obviously defunct but the second I hope will prove useful. For mods I plan on sending in my switch and backing up my digital copies of games because yes I have bought some of my switch games twice (Mostly 1st party) and plan on bolstering my physical versions overtime as prices go down.
This is actually good it reminds me of the old memory cards for PlayStation to backup you game progress, but if Nintendo would allow creating that, is not a complete loss, because by showing proof of purchase, can do a good result in backing up for those who enjoy their games with Nintendo, as long they show proven of buying the game shouldn't be a problem, I want one to save all the games I own and being able to play without switching cartridges is a win for the consumer and the company and for those who are capable of doing that can get paid as long the person has bought their games to be added to their own safe card is actually a win win 😅 if only i knew anyone near me a would go in a blink of an eye to get my games to be installed 😢 if only there was a way near me.
I’m gonna guess Nintendo will just let it be because it is the end of the generation. Plus it’s out of Russia, so no chance of legal action there. Thanks for the video.
I don't play online, mostly single player games with the occasional party game with friends and family all together on one switch. I'd be interested in getting this just to keep a larger number of games on me when traveling without carrying my who collection as individual cartridges, but I can't bring myself to pay that price. I'll just stick to picking a few games I want to play when going out.
I have a cousin who this is perfect for. I can’t afford new games for him, but if I could dump my current library then he could play them forever on Airplane Mode (no interest in Online) I’d have a legitimate reason to buy used games from GameStop and I would ensure that there’s no risk to other consumers or him.
I will only buy flash cartridge like this only when Nintendo stopped supporting the Switch. This is the same reason why I didn't do homebrew or mod on my DS or 3DS until after Nintendo discontinued both of those and when I meant discontinued I meant discontinued as in no more physical support and no more digital support. It's just safer that way. Soon I would mod and do homebrew on my Wii U as well but for now the handhelds are my focus.
this has been a very awesome and informative video and I’m definitely gonna be buying one of these and taking a look but yeah for anybody who doesn’t care about playing online you can actually just disconnect the antenna instead of airplane mode
as someone who owns a lot of physical switch games... I've always been envious of the people who bought digital copies off the eshop, and never need to switch cartridges. would love if nintendo would allow me to just save my copy to the switch for that same functionality. sadly, this flashcart might be the only alternative but I can't justify it. with the weird way of swapping between games, seems super annoying when you have 50+ you want to cycle through. plus, I play exclusively docked and don't want to get up every time. neat idea, but it's not quite "there yet" for me personally.
Subscribed, ty for the vid. My library consists of over 200 carts and I organize them in logical clumps inside a book that keeps them all together, this book is so valuable I don't let my kids look at it. I'm like a damn librarian tryin to keep track of my precious. My plan is to buy 10-15 micro sd cards (16-32gb) and consolidate those "clumps" into backup cards. The kids games go all on one sd, and I feel ok letting their asses go wild on their own systems. I ordered the combo on the first of the year from moddedhardware, hopefully my time is near.
I have seen people would be interested on this. For the physical gamer, I prefer using the actual physical games. But for those who are not interested in playing online, just MOD you console... or buy digital games. Its still cheaper buying digital games in the long run (until NINTENDO decided to close down the eShop).
I was planning on getting this solely for piracy (Nintendo products are insanely expensive here, but hearing that you might get banned if someone else is running the game at the same time as you is wild. Nintendo Switch Lite*
in Canada each game is 70$... EACH GAME. even if this was 100$ it would be worth it. considering that the Mig has only 2$ worth of electronics inside it could be sold for 20$ and still make a huge profit.
After watching this i dont want the card anymore, there is no point for me, i once had a Jailbreaked switch. But now i got so many legit games that i have no use for anything else👍🏼
Honestly, this flashcart is the worst thing to exist for Nintendo Switch and this is hurting us. For one, this thing is not even that useful for playing backup games, especially when cycling multiple games is such a tedious task. Worse, you can't even run homebrew, you might as well mod your switch in that case. The argument "if you don't like it, don't buy it" isn't valid, its existence making a buying used games incredibly dangerous for everyone from bad actors that's abusing this, since you're at risk of console ban thanks to unique ID on every cartridge.
@@Playerz714You think people won't be with these tools being released? I'm not saying that it will be more likely for an individual to encounter a dumped used game, but having these tools out in the wild will surely have some kind of influence. No?
I'm no expert of the law, but I feel like Nintendo going "Oh nope, gonna ban you and prevent you from using the Eshop and online for playing a game that someone else ripped." is... not very good for them legally, unless they wrote their ToS and similar legal contracts in a very specific manner. Like, "sued because someone can't use the Nintendo Online they payed for due to no fault of their own"-level not good for them. Knowing Nintendo, if they have any legal responsibility for people losing access to features, they probably did write their contracts in the aforementioned specific manner...
13:25 I think this point is the main selling point, for me at least. Since I had so many physical games, I would be devastated if I lose just one of those cartridges, but sadly I live in 3rd world country that Mig Switch didn't cover on their shipping address list so yeah, probably had to wait a year or two for these bad boys to arrive in my country.
In the event that modified game files become functional, it's possible that an exploit could arise.

Be aware, a friend's son visiting me trying to download from his lapt, loz botw, and from nintendo, through my internet provider, they sent me a warning letter about copyright infringement.
The possibility of banning someone for buying an used game should be thoroughly investigated in my opinion. If that happens, I wonder if there any legal precedence of whether Nintendo can do that or not - I mean, Nintendo simply shouldn't be allowed to make buying used games a banneable offense. Specially when Nintendo is the party that makes money when people buy new rather than used and hence has an interest in crippling the used market. If anything, it should be Nintendo's responsibility to identify which one is that pirated one and ban that one only - if they can't be 100% certain of which one is it, then no ban should be issued. Consumers shouldn't pay for a security issue on Nintendo's side. And it's not only getting banned from online mind you: imagine losing hundreds of dollars worth of eShop digital content.
I believe if you own the original or the original is no longer available or made to go through hoops to get with restrictions and censorship, it is fine to pirate.
If I get a mig switch. I would use it to play my own dumped games. I just want the backups of my own games because I don’t know how long the physical games will survive
Best use case for this is parents with kids. Who want to play the same game at the same time on a road trip. 6 and 8 year old have lost at least 5 cartridges over the last 5 years Average price of $50 a game that’s $250 lost not to count the duplicate games I have to own just so they can do stuff like play Mario kart together in the car. No brainer.
I’m considering canceling my order. I don’t have the intention of stealing games with this. I wanted the convenience of dumping my games on this and wanted to carry my games around on one specific cart. I’m fine with paying for games. But I don’t want to risk playing my dumped rom, then like my wife is playing her switch playing the same game like animal crossing for example. I can just go in airplane mode. I might cancel.
I have about 100 cartridges to backup for myself. One day, just like the Wii/U it will no longer be available, but in this case (even with the current Yuzu lawsuit), I'm just here to help preserve video games. 85% of video games would never have been able to be played again if not for archiving & pirates. Now in 10 years when its the end of the Switch 2 lifespan and the cart readers are as rare as Amiga 500 parts, I will still have my collection to share with my son. I'm not trying to advocate piracy but his copy of Guardians 3 no longer reads in consoles, now that game is dead and I'm forced to buy another cartridge. Archiving for preservation should not be a crime. Yes I get it, people need to make their money, but true retro gamers of all ages already know the deal for this device and it's a beautiful piece of technology for keeping video games for the generations to come ahead of us.
See with the possibilities of being banned for playing online for a game with the same certificate thats on a different switch i wont have to worry about that cause i never play online story mode all the way
I think my use for this would be ripping my games for use in an emulator. With something like the Steam Deck I could just carry a single device and still have access to my switch games.
