We are on a role with winning food forests, organic gardens & groves to visit during our tour through Pensacola, FL. This stop is just across the street from our last video tour ( • North Florida Food For... ) & we must point out that this awesome neighborhood is pretty lucky to have this tour's host as an ally.
Duane is growing an incredible array of temperate species as well as some awesome tropicals in planting zone 9a & gives us a great presentation of his lush plantings & design ideas.
Since so many of you asked in the comments, we knew it was time to venture out of our growing zone (just north of Tampa, FL). Here is the full North Florida series playlist:

Loving the water salvage Duane! Do your jicama roots stay viable over the season for the next year? I am near Atlanta would love to grow them as a great veggie treat. I would have to bring them in to get a root probably lol what won't we do to garden?

His garden is one of my favourite gardens because of the tropical plants. While watching the video I could picture the foods I could cook out of his garden. He doesn’t need to go to the grocery store to buy veggies, he got what he needs from that garden.

It is a challenge! I live on ancient seashore sandunes next to 95; half my property is coarse, pure white beach sand. Count the positives: excellent drainage, no slugs, and very little weeds in unamended spots! I tend to plant in trenches and depressions, not raised beds.

just some notes on sunchokes 1. plant them where you want to have them for a long time because it is very hard to get all of the tubers out of the ground. the tubers are thickened rhizomes and those same rhizomes can pop up new plants on the end which can spread them pretty far. 2. they are largely self infertile so if you want to get viable seeds you need cross pollination between different varieties. 3. the tubers do have inulin in them which our stomachs cannot digest but bacteria in our intestines can, giving them the name fartichokes. so although you can eat them raw youre probably better off cooking or fermenting them. love this amazing plant, native to the eastern US too

Jerusalem artichokes are the #1 substitute for potatoes if you are a diabetic. My mother in law loved smashed potatoes and could no longer eat them because of the insulin trigger. The Inulin in sunchokes (that's what we call them out West) are not absorbed by the intestines, therefore the body's natural trigger to release insulin is not activated. If you have Diabetes (either kind) I HIGHLY recco looking into this bright tasting tuber. I honestly think smashed sunchokes are better than smashed potatoes! If you ARE a potato eater, try making a half and half batch of smashed spuds and steamed/smashed cauliflower! Nomnomnom! Great vid, love the surprise neighbor who was ALL ABOUT jumping in! That's how we're going to turn the world into one giant Food Forest! Yayyyy

The last plant with the pink-ish flowers, are those Celosia Argentea?
@reneeperry416
@reneeperry416 6 лет назад
Yes, the flowers at 6:23 are Celosia argentea also called Lagos Spinach. In Nigeria it is called Shoko, but I think their version is all green. This version in Duane's garden has green leaves with magenta markings and later puts out those pretty pink flowers. It''s a great edible plant for our hot summers - it takes the heat, plus it is drought tolerant. It's another green that must be cooked though - don't eat it raw. ECHO says you should boil the leaves for 5 minutes and throw away the cooking water.

I toss compost on during the summer when I can't really plant to sit and do better. Hope this helps. - Jacob
