In which I demo an instrument amplifier inspired by the 1932 designed Resonateurs Métalliques by Martenot. The out-of-production Eowave Metallik Resonator is a beautiful sounding instrument, that instead of speaker cone uses a gong to turn electrical signals into sound. Thanks to ‪@JoshSemans‬ for showing the Ondes Martenot in this video, hit up his channel for more beautiful Ondes.

It makes sense, but it was suprising how acoustic it made the electronic sound sources. The modded 606 sounded just like somebody playing acoustic percussion with soft beaters and the OP-1 sounded like an Erhu! Very interesting indeed. Nice to see Josh there too, that early stuff is absolutely fascinating (Ondes Martenot, Ondioline, Theramin etc).
@h2o1969
@h2o1969 3 года назад
I thought the same. Especially the 606. I have seen some videos on making HiFi speakers with foam core, and they are supposed to sound great. I may just get several exciters and start making different speaker and see what different uses there are.

while im not sure it's the same speaker (the ondes martenot had 3 different variations i think) you can actually hear thoms voice beung processed through one of these speakers on the radiohead track "you and whose army" so martenot cabinets are definitely a brush he's painted with before!

Hainbach, you are a musical biochemist ❤️ I really admire your explorations into these organic ways of making sound. The gong is so ancient, I never thought to hear one in the manner you have shown today. Also amazing is how old this technology is (the amp)! You always blow my mind, thank you.

Lovely! This is largely how I made my last sound effects library: placing gongs, cymbals, and sheet metal on top of a transducer. Anyone can do it with the right parts, and it's a great way to add a really unique timbre to any line-level signal hitting the transducer. Huge fan of this technique...your demos of this are great! Plus, the chance to mix this with specific mics and rooms for different tones is just endlessly inspiring. Honestly 17" or less seems fine to me.

This is crazy. I'd be interested to hear how guitar feedback would sound generated through/by this, but I suspect you'd end up sending it into feedback with itself and the guitar would play no part. Edit: The synth sounds are pure old-school Ambient Industrial gold, I bet Coil would have gotten tons of use out of this thing. Just the right balance of eerie non-Western-sounding overtones and shimmering beauty.

Two questions: 1) Care to explain what the hell an exciter is, since it's nothing people are generally familiar with, as opposed to, say, an overdrive guitar pedal, a mic or a MIDI controller? 2) Seriously, what the hell is jour day job for you to be able to afford all the expensive gear?
@drpibisback7680
@drpibisback7680 2 года назад
An exciter in this context just means a device that turns electrical audio signals into vibrations - a piezoelectric transducer of the kind used in Spring and Plate Reverbs to send the signal into the spring or plate would be basically what you use here. If you don't mind it not actually sounding like that in the room as you play, a contact mic on a large cymbal set against an amp apparently sounds somewhat similar when recorded.
