This 1950s Kitchen Gave Housewives "Leisure Time"

The 1940s kitchen which most housewives inhabited during and immediately after World War II required a ton of work. It was an all day affair. So the concept of leisure time, something new in the 1950s for millions of Americans becoming middle-class, buying homes with modern kitchens, was absolutely thrilling to many women including my mother. I can remember as a kid when she first tried our new dishwasher.
In 1955 many modern conveniences were starting to become commonplace in middle-class homes. Here's a list of what you might expect to find in a mid-twentieth century kitchen:
Refrigerator: This was a standard appliance in kitchens by 1955. Many models were available, with some even offering features like automatic defrost.
Gas or Electric Stove and Oven: The type could depend on regional preferences and utilities available. Electric stoves were becoming more common, but gas was still widely used.
Toaster: An everyday appliance for toasting bread, they were usually made of chrome and often had a sleek, modern design.
Electric Mixer: Stand mixers and handheld electric mixers were both popular. They helped to make tasks like mixing dough or batter much easier.
Coffee Maker or Percolator: Electric percolators were popular for brewing coffee at this time.
Blender: This appliance became popular for making things like milkshakes and puréeing foods.
Dishwasher: While not as common as today, dishwashers were beginning to make their way into middle-class homes in the mid-1950s, especially in the United States.
Microwave Oven: Though the microwave oven was invented in the late 1940s, it was not commonly found in households until the 1960s. In 1955, it would have been quite rare and expensive.
Waffle Iron: These were common for making homemade waffles.
Electric Can Opener: This was another appliance that was starting to become popular.
The garbage disposal, also known as the waste disposal unit or garbage disposer, was invented in 1927. John Hammes developed the idea for the appliance after observing his wife's frustration with kitchen waste. He patented his device, known as the "InSinkErator," in 1935 and formed the InSinkErator company in Racine, Wisconsin, to manufacture and sell the device.
As for General Electric (GE), it was and is still a major player in the home appliance industry. In 1955, their product line included various types of home appliances including refrigerators, freezers, electric ranges, water heaters, air conditioners, dishwashers, and other kitchen appliances.

My mom was a single working gal raising two kids on her own during the 60's and 70's I grew up in apartment setting that had no dishwasher or electric garbage disposal, as soon as my mom thought I was old enough not to drop dishes and glasses one of my household chores was setting the kitchen table and cleaning up after dinner that included washing the dishes, pots and pans by hand. to this day I still prefer to wash dishes by hand over using the dishwasher. I love looking back at ways of life from the past. I enjoyed this, David Hoffman.

@Mathew Farmer... as a kid I grew up in apartment setting that had no garbage disposal my mom would save empty milk cartons we would put all of our sloppy garbage into the milk carton like (potatoes skins, carrots skins, etc. coffee grounds, any hot cooking oil or grease we put into a tin can to cool down before going into the milk carton, any leftover food that went bad or could not be save that had moisture to it.) one of my households' choirs was to take out the garbage each night. 😊

@@Michelle-xk9glAbsolutely! Stuff was built to last then, and if it did have a problem, it was usually something simple to repair or replace. Now the parts inside come with an expiration date which is usually one week after the warranty runs out lol. Nice scam if you can get away with it and companies have definitely been getting away with it for at least 3 decades.

When I was in grad school, I learned that the rise of consumer culture coincided with advertising on broadcast television as well as many housewives making decisions on home appliances (specifically those for the kitchen). Whatever autonomy or authority a homemaker did *not* have in the 50s and 60s, she at least got the last (and sometimes only) word in retail purchases to maintain a household.

This is a very eco friendly kitchen. That fridge is probably still functioning somewhere and didn’t end up in a landfill after five years. Paper trash bags. Cardboard cartons for the cleaners. Recyclable glass. Even that new automatic dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand. The dishwasher is a great example of beneficial progress. Single use plastics and throwaway appliances suffering from planned obsolescence aren’t.

In the 50s, there were many films talking about how all the tech advancements would create more free time. They gave us the impression that, with new tech, you could make your required 10 widgets in half a day instead of a whole day, and go home early. Instead, they just doubled the requirement to 20 widgets. No free time was gained, and instead all the profits from increased productivity went to the corporations. But then we end up with huge amounts of widgets no one has a real need for, so marketing and advertising had to convince us we needed multiple widgets. More and more consumed and more and more pollution and garbage, and still no extra free time.

The 50's were when there were a few, relatively simple "formulas" for living the dream. I was a toddler, but everything depicted in the switch is true and the ability to reduce labor was extraordinary compared to before. I especially remember my mother spending hours doing laundry by hand. How could the formulas go so wrong? Nowadays we have turned "homes" into prisons with loads of appliances for "convenience." As a result, we Americans have lost our ability to improve ourselves and our communities. It's all performative now. Doesn't mean shit.

It is interesting how purity culture affected the 1950s USA. In Europe, nobody has or had a garbage disposal, they are illegal here. This is for one because it clogs up the entire sewage system, but also because nobody except the Germans had any problem with trash cans being near or in the house. Especially in city apartments. In the USA however it seemed that everything needed to be up to purity standards, from the bright white houses to the bright white dresses to the flawless lawns to the seamless asphalt streets. Everything polished to a shine, with all deemed vulgar hidden away.
