Coming up an interview with one of the 70s most prolific and successful bands… America! They blazed onto the scene as rookies with a #1 hit with A Horse With No Name and their debut album also hit #1 and then they won the cursed Grammy for Best New Artist. History has not been kind to many of the winners of that award but this America blew UP THAT CURSE with several hits IMMEdiately after including today’s smash Sister Golden Hair that had a very depressing opening line. The song originally sat on the shelf for a year not getting a release on their previous album. But the timing was right when they went to work with the biggest producer in the world, George Martin and they rewarded him with his 1st #1 hit outside of producing the Beatles. They got some flack for a pretty tame swear word in the song and admits he borrowed from another #1 song of the time which is funny because that particular song would lose a lawsuit for ripping off another song. The interview is coming up next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. Stories you won't get anywhere else. We have a great show today with one of the biggest bands of the 70s… They blazed onto the scene when their very first single and album both hit #1. After A Horse With No Name and I Need You became smash hits America became a household name. Then They were nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy award along with some famous contemporaries including Loggins and Messina, Harry Chapin, Eagles, and John Prince. They won but luckily they were able to avoid the famous best new artists Grammy curse…
if you don’t know what I'm talking about we’ll have to do a whole show on it. Many of the winners of that award had major issues after getting that Grammy. Everything from the sophomore jinx to death. Remember Milli Vanilla won that particular award. Some may say the curse came later but many winners before America had major career setbacks. Bobby Gentry, the Swingle Singers, and Jose Feliciano never had another major hit after winning it. Let me know in the comments if you’d like me to do a show on it in the future.
Well, America blew the curse out of the water as their next few singles were major hits. Then a few years after they got a chance to work with the most famous producer of all time George Martin who helmed dozens of #1 hits with the Beatles. They actually gave him his first #1 hit outside of the Fab Four with today’s song subject Sister Golden Hair. Up next Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley of America tell the story of this 70s classic, how the song sat on the shelf for a time, and how they beat the logic that you can’t have a hit song with a downer opening line. and the tame swear word they caught flack for and we’ll try to find out who Sister Golden Hair is?
