@@ProfessorofRock I’m definitely excited for that one. The guy is a genius. Coming out of the age of the blues pentatonic scale, Easton was never lazy. Very heady compositions at times, with uniqueness in each of his deliveries, and playing within the chords changes. The guy is the MVP of their sound. Of course, I’m a guitarist and I’m biased, but he’s in my all-time top 5. Looking forward to the interview!

Elliot Easton is of that rare breed of guitar player who has ample chops in reserve, but will craft these exquisite melodic solos to complement any given composition. Others like this: James Honeyman Scott (Pretenders), Mike Campbell, George Harrison. These players know how to work with a song, not dominate or drive it.

Is there better ear candy than that transition between Shoo-Be-Doo and Candy-O? I used to crank that up loud and rewind it again and again - just that part. The opening to Nightspots is so different and driving and unique. Incredible album. I was a going into my junior year of high school when Candy-O was released, and me and my friends would play air guitar to it on our tennis rackets. I got to see The Cars many times in the 80s and I saw them on the Move Like This tour, many decades after seeing them - I thought - for the last time. Benjamin Orr has one of the if not the best male voices in the history of rock. His memory was lost to time, especially tragically dying so young. He never lost it, even at the height of being sick he still sung incredibly soulfully. This was a really nice look at their early career. The Cars were a generational band. The Live Aid performance, especially Just What I Needed, is incredible. The cool eighties Nike trainers worn by Ben Orr (RIP) are almost as good! That crowd in Philadelphia looks like it was sweltering in the heat. Meanwhile in Wembley one of the most highly charged emotive moments of the whole concert was when Drive was played to footage of the victims of the famine in Ethiopia. It is still shocking and moving nearly four decades on.

Love them then and still love them Now! Seen many of their concerts... so rememberable... Oh, I lived in Massachusetts... my parents nicknamed me Candy when I was a baby... My first car was a 69 Firebird... Crazy as it seems,, their music followed and narrated my amazingly fun life!♡Their music fills my heart even today from cleaning my house to mowing my lawn. But in the end the song I want played at my funeral will be.... Drive!... They gave me joy from my teenage life to today in my 60s. ... The passing of Orr and Ocasek crush my heart and dictated how time has flown by, but when I listen to their music I'm young and care free again... THANK YOU CARS for thousands of hours of amazing memories!

Drive is my absolute favourite Cars song. The emotion Benjamin put in every word wrings my heart when I listen to it. I actually remember the exact moment that I heard about his passing. I was entering the living room while caring for my nephew and it was announced on the news. I felt like I had lost a friend and a piece broke off of my heart that I would never get back. His voice touched me that deeply. Thank you, professor, for this wonderful tribute to this amazing band and song.

During Live Aid they used Drive as the song for a short film depicting a small African child that fell and didn't have the strength to get back up because of severe starvation. When it ended and the hosts came back on, they were both totally destroyed and couldn't speak for several seconds (nor could anyone else who saw it, including me, I'm sure). It was one of the most memorable moments in Live Aid.

They are at the forefront of my youth. Between listening to the record albums in my room to cruising main street in my small town, with my buddy in his 67 Mustang, the Cars were the most played for driving. The best. Rick's voice is great and suited for the songs he sang but Ben Orr just had the best voice ever. It killed me when I found out he lost his battle to pancreatic cancer. No other voice like his. We're experiencing the fact of life, that it comes to an end. Fifty years ago, I was in a traffic accident that virtually killed me. Being snatched back into the living world did a couple things for me. First, it eliminated my fear of death, not that I'm trying to get there. Second, it allowed me to develop from an atheist to a believer. I began to think about things in the world, and one morning I was driving on a piece of highway I had been on hundreds of times, when it hit me that the place wasn't random chance. Sad to hear the news of celebrities dying, but it's inevitable. Olivia Newton John left this mortal coil, fortunately at home.

I recorded my own version of "Just What i needed", where I played all instruments except drums. It was HARD! The song has so many little details, it took me several takes to get it right. Being mostly a bass player, I'm a huge fan of the late Ben Orr. His bass playing was impecable, and his voice.... Wow! Yes, I can differentiate him from the great Ric Ocasek. Ben's voice was... so clear, so natural, it came natural. Ric had those awesome impostures on his voice, which gave some of the songs that sound they needed. The Cars was one of those bands so underrated.... but so awesome! I have the fondest memories of them. Again, what a great job you do, Adam!! Kudos to you! Thank you so much!

I'm sure I've chimed in on any Cars song you cover Adam. Growing up as a teenager in New England with Boston sending us so many unique bands. Saw the Cars a few times and they sounded so good live. The two vocalist (rip) were other worldly, but what a lot of people miss is how much virtuosity each member. Elliot would inject the exact right precisely timed lead, Greg added so many layers over the music. David drove the band when the Cars needed driving. Ben's vocal and bass were so smooth and sexy. Ric was the most quirky and clever New Wave rock rhythm guitarists. I used to tell my friend who didn't want to like them because they weren't a rock band to just go see them. What is rock exactly? Genres are just keywords that can be combined like attributes to help the industry market the bands. To a music fan like me, The Cars, The Pixies, Aerosmith, Boston, all coming out of the city, were all different types of rock. But even had they no counted as rock, people should let go of the rules that tell them what to like and listen to what appeals to them

I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song. I was in high school at the time when I scooped up CANDY-O as soon as it came out, having worshipped The Cars’ stunning debut. I invited my friend Francine over to my house and we had a track by track listening party. When we heard LET’S GO, we had to stop and comment that this was one of the most perfect power pop songs we’d ever heard. One earworm hook after another. That was this band. They knew how to build moments and add layers so that they burrowed into your head. That pulsing keyboard, the handclaps, the propulsive drums and Benjamin Orr’s slightly English seductive vocals. My mother loved the band and right before she passed away in 1989, she wanted to hear her favorite musicians. They were Tracy Chapman, Michael Jackson, and The Cars. She commented on how much she loved their production and their sound. She thought they were magical and we blasted their music. It was so wonderful to see her smile in her final moments. God bless The Cars.

Love the Cars. Loved their Pop-Rock synth tunes. Ben Orr…Is BY FAR my favorite of two vocalists. I have to agree with the Prof. about Gens singing has a very effortless, nonchalant quality. I find it pulls me in and makes me listen even more intently. This particular song, “Let’s Go”, is irresistible when in my car. It has to be cranked! Ben did a track with Joni Mitchell in 1988 "The Beat of Black Wings” singing back-ups. You clearly hear his distinct effortless tambour in the interludes. So Beautiful. In the world of cover bands, It seems like nearly all the bands will play “Just What I Needed”. One of the cover bands I was in during the mid-2000s (a 3 piece Gtr, Bass, Drums) I insisted on playing “Let’s Go!” instead of the afore mentioned song. With some out-of-the-box arranging the song was ALWAYS a floor filler. it became one the band’s favorite songs to play and one of my favorites to sing. I was devastated by his passing from cancer in the early 2000s.

Ben Orr and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick have to be the two greatest vocalists of their time. Both from the Midwest. You are spot on about the Cars obliterating genre lines. This hard rock/metal kid, class of 81, who was just beginning to dabble in punk rock couldn't get enough of the first two Cars albums when they were released. Probably because although their pop genius is evident, they could really rock, especially on those two records. Pop, rock, new wave, punk, art rock, experimental...man, they threw it all in the pot and it tasted DELICIOUS! Still does. Plus, I'm from Boston.
