My cousin was a F14 Tomcat pilot in the 91 Gulf war. I sat in a simulator in the RIO seat this aircraft was like the mustang P51D before for it as the Cadillac of the skies for its day as a swept wing fighter.

Ron.. Great video. I'm in the exact same boat. Just bought 2x high speeds. One is a fixer upper, that needs a hard top (which is a lot of work, and your F14 may go that route), and the other is a rusty pit of hell that you'd run a mile from. Both had no legs, coin doors or back glass. Watching this F14 collection, and taking notes.

They don't make a F-14 Hardtop so that's not a option in this case... I've got a High Speed down the line i'm going to fix up in storage, it's pretty rough though :)

used to own one of these, whish i would have never gotten rid of it. something to consider on the playfield - a printed overlay, will make the playfield look brand new, have to take everything off, but something to consider

I've done a few of those in the past but they're a lotttttt of work unfortunately, you have to get all the old artwork off or when the lights shine through the inserts the text doesn't line up....

Ron I have been working on F14's sibling Fire for over a year. Removed the factory mylar. Not much PF paint lifting, but did damage text on some inserts. Getting rid of the adhesive was the hard part. Used mixture of flour and Goo Gone as recommend on internet. Can't wait to see how you handle insert damage. I have same problem with fire art on triangular inserts. Been struggling with what to do. My lower displays didn't work, uppers did. Replaced with LED displays.

Unfortunately the rest of it needs so much work I don't think it would be cost effective for the customer to spend all those hours on the playfield, I have to charge them for it (of course) and with that added on what it will cost to get it running well again, they may have to wait on the playfield (I can't spend a year on it!) We'll see what we end up with....

I was just listening to the silver ball Chronicles podcast on spotify. and they're going through the history of Bally's artists from mid 70's and late 80's. In one of the machines you're talking about was night Rider just because I just seen it in this video. But long story short the person who did the art of the backglass for it. Through inspiration from his high school days. And the woman was a friend of his and the man in the truck was his high school coach. Just for future reference it's a pretty interesting podcast. I just got done listening to the Steve Richie history for Williams. Because F14 TOMCAT. Also do a history for python Angelo and Steve Gomez.

This game always reminds of school summer holidays as it was installed at my local arcade at the start of said holidays back in 1987 (i think). Everything about it oozes that coolness factor that you very rarely see in either computer games or pinball today. Those ball locks stopped working about the time i had to go back to school :).

Wow. That game is in sad shape, but the fact that it actually still boots is promising. This is going to be fun to watch, and not just because I dropped a lot of money into these machines as a teenager. It's going to be interesting to see if the missing displays are actually dead, or if it's just the battery damage (or both). And remember, kids: _Don't play with rusty balls!_ (Sorry. I'm 51 years old, but my inner 12 year old had to giggle.)

@@LyonsArcade Yuck! It so often is, unless you get lucky and catch it at the right time. Alright, so the missing displays probably _are_ due to battery corrosion. I'm not really surprised, since the bottom two displays seemed to be in such good shape (nice and bright, no flickering, etc). Makes you wonder if maybe the manufacturers should've put a bright orange warning label somewhere on the machine that says "Hey! There's batteries in the back box! Take them out before you put the machine in storage for 25 years!" 😉

Noticed that one of the reflectors for the beacons was in the bottom cabinet with the other random stuff you was sorting through. Might have some extra work there with the beacons...

How often do you recommend swapping pinballs? btw, my gorf linear power supply was shot, so i'm getting it recapped. Hopefully that gorf will boot after that, i'm crossing my fingers. I did want to ask, Do you think swapping the linear psu for a switcher hurts it's collectable value? I hope you do save this pin. It looks like it won't be too bad to fix. You always get thumbs ups from me.

On a Gorf, swapping the power supply with the switcher doesn't really hurt the resale in my opinion. There's nothing really special about that linear one, it does the standard voltages the switcher does so we've done it before. Pretty easy little swap too! We just swap the pinballs when they show any sign of pitting or rust.

I know I am childish, but had to laugh when you talked about playing with rusty balls lol. Seriously though, would be lovely to see this machine up and running, but I can see the playfield is a challenge. The sound board works, but some of it does sound a bit messed up, distorted and a loud buzz in the background.... Looking forward to seeing how you tackle this one. It will certainly be more challenging than the Playmatic in the last series.

I have a 2020 Black Knight sword of rage... what cleaner/wax should I be using just as general maintenance? I notice I'm getting some dirt tracks. ? Love your videos, learned a lot! We have a few older games (me and my buddy) and I now am confident I can fix nearly anything. =).

I use Carnauba wax like you can buy at the auto parts store, you can see some on our website www.LyonsArcade.com/parts.html .... That Black Knight Sword of Rage is pretty awesome, also designed by the same designer as this game, Steve Ritchie.

I know but for reselling.. Either he's willing to spend the money to resell it.. But they play field.. If he want those blue and reds to pop... Either go with the restoration in the mylar.. Or just buy a new playfield.. A new playfield makes more sense in cost effectiveness.

What clear coat do you use once you've finished your touch-up paint? It brushes on too? Hoping to see how you get this mylar off.. your whole process. Staying tuned.

We don't brush the clear on, we just use Krylon clear coat in a spray can. You have to have everything super clean though if there's any wax the clear will bubble.

@@808zhu We just mask off whatever's left on the playfield, but we don't go crazy with it, put a little tape around switches, etc. and just spot clear coat a little area. If you don't go crazy heavy with it, it blends in to the areas around it. The best way to do it is with auto clearcoat but takes a lot of time and money, we're just doing player machines people can enjoy not full restorations :)

@@LyonsArcade Awesome. That's what I'm planning on doing with my playfield wear.. just a nice, modest touch-up - nothing fancy. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it does need to be addressed. Once it's done I'll slap mylar over it (unless otherwise advised) and the next owner can do what they want. Player's condition is totally okay by me. It keeps that vintage charm. Thanks for the tips. 👍👍

Would it be possible to remove the inserts from the underside of the play field and then carefully trim the Mylar away from the holes and put new inserts in?

They're really hard to get out and only come out from the top (they have a little step on the hole so they only go through the top)....

The lower half was mylar somebody installed, the top half only has a couple pieces of Mylar, but they're factory installed.... the lower part though is also over the mylar in front of the kickers, whew what were they thinkin :)

Wow....that is a mess, and is really sad to see that. I'm sure you could do quite a bit of work, but wow. So the million dollar question I have (I honestly don't know, but I do have my kevlar underwear on), do any companies exist that have artwork files that could be used to re-print the artwork? It may be cost prohibitive, but man, that would be great. F-14, Fireball 2, Black Knight, Need For Speed...just a few of my favorites.

Yes there are some overlays you can get, and everyonce in a while they remake some of the playfields.... very expensive though and a lot of work to install!

Check out the ROM pack from a pinball simulator. It will have an artwork pack with the playfield and inserts, even the backglass. It might be worth tooling up if you do a lot of restoration. A 3d resin printer for clear/colored light inserts. A printer that can print vinyl for the playfield and other artworks. Print media for transferring print onto glass is pretty easy to use and low cost nowadays. Laser cutter.

@@DirtyRobot I have a friend that does in-home silk screening...he can handle back-glass sized pieces with his setup. I don't think he's ever done glass before, and usually only does 1 or 2 colors. That previous back glass that he had (must have been 17 colors on it) probably would not be done "in home" because of the steps and required registration....also the colors. Ink isn't cheap for silk screening, and it does have a limited life. I'll have to talk to my friend to see if he's ever done anything like that. Then again, I have to get myself a machine, but right now, people are charging about 5 times market price for these things (I've seen FireBall II's go for over $10K in 'playable" shape (i.e., it's a mess, but it works)).

@@WreckDiver99 I was suggesting an inkjet or DS transfer onto glass. You can get specialist film/paper that you can print full color on. You then use a chemical to transfer it onto the glass. After this process you would add a clear coat or similar protective layer. I have also seen a heat bonded process, where the glass is printed on directly and then cooked in an oven to cure the print, but this process is high end and expensive.

Did you ever try to remove the mylar with a paint friendly thinner, such as rubber cement thinner or lighter fluid? I know it's flammable but used with caution it mite work. I have used it on suck on tape,stickers and old plexi glass backing paper with pretty good success. Good luck.

The sound chips are no longer available and had to be replaced by FPGAs if you are interested check out Jeri Ellsworth fixing the sound on a Pinball machine,BTW does this machine play any tracks from the movie TOP GUN.

You could try retrobriting the clear beacon. Submerged in beauty shop grade hydrogen peroxide and exposed to either artificial UV light or real sunlight on a good hot day especially. I have achieved incredible results with title strip plastic in jukebox and some white pinball parts as well. It's an amazing hack!

@@LyonsArcade Yeah. In that case, I'd buy a replacement. They're not that hard to find. A bit expensive for a piece of clear plastic IMO, but in this case, worth it. It beats a yellowed, cracked beacon any day.

I have a Road Kings that had been playing great with no problems, now all of a sudden it is stuck in a very similar start up failure, any ideas what to do, since it was playing well now not?

It probably just has dead batteries.... turn if on, and if it's in test mode, hold down the 'advance' button inside the coin door until you get to the end of the settings and it should start up. We're going to go over all this in a later video.

@@LyonsArcade I have already tried replacing the batteries, no luck, local guy mention could be the main power board (original ). Also read where a bad flipper diode could jam up the power board

If it's in the settings menu it's because it hasn't saved the settings... could be a problem with the batteries not making good contact with the holders or the holders have deteriorated, it shouldn't have anything to do with the power supply. If it doesn't boot into settings yes it could definitely be the power supply!

It does not boot into settings, when it first started , it would make a single bing after a while, then after a while more it would kind of get like in the video, now the GI will flicker a bit at first turn on and then stay at static GI, no other activity after being in for an hour or so

Even just the shipping makes most stuff cost prohibitive, and if it's second hand it's not gonna be too much better than this one or they would have never pulled it out of whatever it was in you wouldn't think...

Hello from Australia, just wondering why your videos are in 720p I have tried to adjust your videos to 1080p but no go, can you help here please, P. S your note pads we have the same saying here in Australia for that,hehehe...

Hmmm, i'm not sure about the 1080 thing, i'm not too technical but on my end it's letting me play it on youtube as 1080p in 60fps so maybe it was just having a bad night :) Thanks for watching Wayne, we appreciate it, even if you're stuck in old-school 720 :)

If he wants to resell the machine one of the things those colors got to pop. A reproduction play field would make that happen without having to take off the old mylar. And probably less of a pain in the ass. Good luck and God speed on that.

People put those reproduction playfields in their machines but I don't think he'd get his money back out of this title if he did that, they cost about $800 plus shipping, and it would be pretty expensive to take the time to swap the playfield, lots of work just getting all the sockets and wires and etc. swapped over to the new one.

I get it.. but those jewels need to POP for resale.. Especially for those playfield for Williams electronics.. That mylar is the hooking point.. Do you want a good game for your home.. with a possibility of resale? Or outright... Don't flip this machine unless you're intending to do it.. I'm not I'm not trying to be an a******.. At all. But that playfield... Either you try to lift that mylar or buy a new playfield? There's no way to fix those jewels.. Without lifting the mylar.. This customer needs to make some hard decision... How much money they're willing to commit to fixing this game. And how much money are they going to get with this game on resell. On the secondary market.. With out the blue and reds popping off.. The mylar is the key.. Major conundrum.. This dude need to make some hard decisions.. and how he invest in this game..

i was just going to suggest to heat the mylar to get it off. if you can get new playfield art you could order new art and redo the playfield. or if you get a junker machine where for example it has been in a flood and half of the cabinet is ruined but the playfield is ok you could replace the playfield. sometimes it is worth the repairs if the game is in a level of vintage and rarity that it no longer exists.

Use water decals for your inserts... they have a very very low profile. Redo the black. And clear coat that puppy! 🤪

I had one with minor problems a while ago, and Jee! It plays fast. The only thing that was broke was the gearbox to the beacons. I fixed it with something i found on the nett with the right transmission. Thanks for a new very exciting series to look forward to.
