I didn't even leap to "GHOST!" when I watched the video. He saw footprints at the entrance. For me, my first thought on seeing that chain swinging was "There's someone else in the mine." A person is way more threatening than a ghost and even more concerning when said person is apparently living in an old abandoned mine.

I don't think he's lying. I think he was genuinely shocked and spooked by that chain swinging. The big teller for me is, he went quiet. Completely quiet. Throughout the video he says nothing about ghosts or haunting or anything. He's not even creeped out by the weird entrance. And then even when he does get spooked, he doesn't make a sound. Just makes the statement "I don't know why that chain is swinging" and then turns the camera off and books it. No other comment, nothing. I honestly think that kind of thing is pretty geniune.

he was right to follow his instincts and get out! i’ve been wondering if the swinging chain may have been caused by a magnetic force or, like a pendulum, it could have been under the force of gravity. it’d be interesting to go back to that mine and see if the chain is still swinging back and forth.

Why? I would not even consider being like Frank. Running away from something that can't hurt you is a weak way to go thru life. Confront the unknown and make it known. He moved the chain himself. Mr. Ballen conveniently left out the "creepy" noises that frank put in the video later on. Frank does stay and explores more. At one point he "hears" creepy noises, but those noises are from a stock library. The video is entirely fake. As for the reason he did it. It could be for fun, it could be an attempt ay going viral. Who knows? Mr Ballen's evidence is flimsy.

I disagree. I don't understand why people immediately jump to the supernatural when they lack an actual explanation. First of all, appealing to the supernatural to fill in the blanks does not actually fill in any blanks, it raises many more questions and answers none. His reaction seems extremely realistic to me. I’ve had some weird experiences in my life and I’ve reacted like that too. You just stop, look at the thing, trying to figure it out, considering if it’s dangerous, and then you either leave or move on with a pounding heart and lingering anxiety. No wonder he went looking for it afterwards. You get curious after an experience like that. It’s a mix of being scared but also wanting to see more because it would validate your previous experience. That and of course hoping to catch it on tape for views.

Oh yeah. I remember hearing this really weird noise on the woods. Freaked me and my brother out but we followed it anyway. Turned out it was a bird called the ruffled grouse that was making that wierd noise. Another time I was hiking and I felt like I was being watched. Everything went silent and me and my dog just looked around figuring out what was wrong and that's when I saw this wierd looking deer so I emediatly left the area. It was probably just a sick deer and a couger or something was stalking it but that too would be terrifying to have a couger pounce on you.

I spent 15 years as a coal miner and I have a story that I think you'd really like. A miracle happened during a cave in where three of us were buried under tons of coal and rock. One single timber broke in half as the roof came in and fell against the machinery creating a pocket just big enough to allow us to survive. There's much more to the story but that's the basics.

You may have seen either Surviving Wilburg, a documentary on the mine fire disaster that happened there or maybe the Crandall canyon disaster footage. The incident with me took place across the valley and a year after Crandall Canyon. Same type of thing just not on as large a scale as Crandall. The bounces we experienced would register as high as 5.3 on Utah's seismic readings and we were at the epicenter.

I would be less afraid of a ghost swinging that chain and more afraid of a psychopath with a rusty knife getting THAT close to me without me knowing. Ghosts aren’t scary. Sociopaths who hang out in abandoned mines are terrifying. If he saw footprints, there very well could have been someone living or, at least, hiding in the mine. The swinging chain may not have started swinging right when the light shined on it, the person having moved away before Frank looked that way, but the inertia of the chain persisted. It's not the only chain swinging, either; there is one even closer to Frank. I genuinely think there was someone else in that cave and they did not want Frank to stumble upon them. It's honestly scarier than any "ghost" in my mind. I don't particularly want to meet the kind of person who skulks in an abandoned mine.

Came here to say this. Similar thing happened to me in a large public park. There was a kind of remote area I liked to go near the water, but being remote it was hard to get to. So I was disappointed when I got there only to see someone else already there, except instead of hanging out looking at the water normally, when I arrived they immediately slipped into the reeds and went completely quiet. I could now only see their shoes. I think they thought I hadn't and couldn't see them. Those shoes didn't move. Now I can understand putting some vegetation between you and others when you're enjoying nature. But then the shoes would be moving. Walking, or twitching or tapping or adjusting themselves slightly on the ground - not staying rigidly still while the person they are attached to makes no sound. But like i said, I really wanted to have the spot, so at first my brain was slow to adjust and I thought I'd hang out and see if I could make them choose to leave first. But the shoes stayed totally still. The person stayed totally quiet. And as a few minutes passed like this, I realized that if it was that important to them not to be seen, maybe i didn't want to see them either, and it was time to go.

And you would know for a fact the footprints were made that very day instead of a week or two ago or longer Sherlock? As I posted earlier, if someone goes into the mine a month after Frank, and sees Frank's footprints, then that means Frank is still in the mine a month later? You come to all of your conclusions based upon the fact that Frank simply said he saw footprints? Also, a mine and a cave are not the same thing.

And my dad honestly thought nothing of it, because he said, "weird things happen in abandoned mines." Hang in there man. I was in that situation for far l long anger than I care to talk about. If I may give some advice? Make sure to keep a case of water somewhere in your vehicle, get ahold of a roll of reflective material like subflooring or even a few cheap windshield sunshades and cut them to fit over all of your windows. It will give you some privacy as well as insulation and help keep the inside of your car darker for a longer time so you can try to get the necessary sleep that is so very difficult to achieve without really being comfortable. Good luck out there and stay safe.

I was way more freaked out by the thought that someone else was there, messing with him by swinging that chain, being in pitch dark if his torch was knocked out of his hand and the fact that he was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The fact that he saw footprints on his way into the mine, my mind went straight to a person being inside that mine. I’m in the same position. I normally don’t listen to these types of Halloween like stories out of season, but holy crap. Ever since I found this dudes channel I can’t stop listening. His format, delivery and ability to enunciate, while draw you into the story as if we all were there is quite exceptional, in fact a bit extraordinary how well he tells these stories. Definitely one of the best storytellers I’ve heard.

Oh, do I ever remember thoooose day's! 😏 Thank gaawwd for the battery backup feature on RPG and (some) adventure game's (where you had to hold Reset, while pushing the Power button, simultaneously releasing). But even after those save features came out, it wasn't on every game. I, clearly, remember having a notebook and pen sitting on top of our deck, for passwords. Also, for notes when playing harder, longer games. I, also, remember leaving the power on, with the game paused on game's like Rygar. Long game's that had no save feature at all. We would do this at night, then turn off the TV, and cover up the red light, indicating the power being on- so that our mom wouldn't turn it off. Then hurry off the school bus, running in and hoping that it was a) still on, and b) hadn't frozen, due to the system being on for 12+ hours. Lol... oh how times have changed 😁

I love exploring abandoned mines/caves. I once went into a lava tube in idaho with my girlfriend, and at the end of it, about a mile or two in, we were walking when we randomly saw a phone light go on then go off. I called out to whoever it was and got no response. This lava tube was off a remote highway and no other cars were parked anywhere around. Suffice to say we booked it the hell out of there and I kept my eyes glued to the back of my head. Anyone deep in a cave sitting in the dark that doesnt respond to callouts, I don’t wanna meet. lol

There's always the chance that it was a person who heard random other people in a secluded lava tube they were exploring. They then got scared and turned their light on, realized, "oh crap, I just alerted to my position", and turned the light off. They didn't answer because they were scared of whoever it was calling to them might attack them. Just another way of looking at the encounter though xD.

Great episode! I love exploring old mines in Arizona and have never ran across anything paranormal. I did find a very ill-tempered badger in one once, but that was it. The swinging chain could have been caused by a minor earthquake. But, only another nearby chain was affected, so... Definitely creepy. Only discovered Mr. Ballen a couple of weeks ago, but as a former squid and lover of the paranormal, I am hooked!

Imagine how terrifying it would be if you entered the mine and the entrance collapsed, trapping you inside. Those videos where people get stuck in caves are terrifying. And the notion of being trapped in a haunted cave is about as terrifying as it gets.

I feel like you skip some VERY important facts here. Frank doesn't just make paranormal videos now, he has had several "encounters", and at least one of these was proven to be a hoax. He did another mine video, and in that video you can hear scary whispers. The problem is the whispers were analyzed, and they come from a horror sound effects page. Frank was obviously pulling some BS, and that makes his credibility zero. Also, this wasn't his first paranormal mine video. He previously had a video with a random noose hanging in a cave, and then you see what appears to be a ghost. This all makes a good story, but lets give perspective. This is almost certainly a hoax, and this wasn't a guy just posting mine videos, at some point he decided to try and make his stuff more interesting by adding a paranormal factor, and this was his SECOND try.

I've been watching Frank since he had almost no subscribers, and I can tell you he's authentic. He just genuinely enjoys exploring abandoned mines even if they don't get many views. Most of the time he's completely alone in the mines in the middle of no where, at night. Dudes got some balls

I must agree. I was expecting to see who shook the chain when he downloaded at home. He feels very uneasy, like he's being watched and there's strange sounds. There's a container near the base of the chain and I thought food or water maybe. It's scary for Frank but not followers of Mr Ballen.

I used to not believe in ghosts until I lived in a home where I started experiencing strange, unexplainable activity. For instance, one day while me & my girlfriend at the time were sitting on the couch talking while all of the sudden my closet door swung all the way open & after about 10-15 seconds it then closed all the way & latched shut. That closet door had never done that before or since & I lived in that home for 11 years. That was just one instance & for me it was the most notable since it was completely unexplainable.

In all the years I've been watching RU-vid, thousands of videos and channels, I've never actually waited for anyone to upload like I do with this channel. It's almost like looking forward to seeing a friend, or someone you really enjoy spending time with each week. Even if it's just for a couple of 30 minute catch ups. Can't describe it really. Frank saw someone else’s footprints entering the mine, something that urged him forward. He didn’t make note of footprints leaving the mine. Wouldn’t it be likely that the chain swung because someone else was down there with him? In my opinion, just as creepy as the idea of a ghost down there.

It's odd that he didn't hear footsteps though. And you would think the sound would travel really well in a mine. The chains were swinging wildly so you would think that person isn't being too quiet wit their movements either. Not saying what I think it is, but damn that's strange.

My hometown was built on mining. There is a huge mining system that goes from the top of a large hill to hundreds of meters beneath our feet. Like this mine, there are some vertical shafts that go really far down. They used to be elevators. The sight of this mine is now a park, and most of the mines are closed off. Key word, Most. I know the exact locations of mines that are difficult to access, but wide open. Even though I could at any time, I don't dare go near those shafts. They are a literal death trap. Toxic chemicals in the air, maze like tunnels, huge drop-offs into vertical shafts, and sharp rocks in cramped spaces. They are so off the beaten path that if I were to get lost within no one think to look in them, that is if they even know of their existence. This guy has balls for going in mines like that alone, I couldn't do it unless I had a party with me. Oh and after that, I think maybe a reason the chain was moving (besides the possibility he did it) is that he wasn't alone. Not a ghost, but something else, like an animal or person. It could have been a small animal noticing him and running into cover. Or, it could have been a person sneaking to cover thinking this guy was some kind of authority there to get him out (there were recent footprints there, maybe the person hadn't left, and people are not supposed to be in there). I doubt it was a ghost, but he still had every reason to get out of there. Person or animal responsible for moving that chain could have been dangerous.

Actually if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense to fake it. People say that all of his videos are normal and because of that he has no reason to fake it when he's not a paranormal channel, but that's exactly why it can be so effective. Because he can use that as a strength and more "credibility". It's a great marketing move since people love paranormal. If he did upload other paranormal content it would make it less credible overall because paranormal events are super rare and people are more skeptical. So making 1 paranormal video only benefits him in the long run if the video is found by the algorithm or shared by others to be used in compilations. What makes me skeptical is that the event conveniently happens exactly when he turns to show the entrance and then rotate the camera back, obscuring the view for few seconds to see if the chain really moved by itself or someone else did it. If this happened while he was walking and a chain literally started moving by itself in plain view, I would've been sold.

As I was sayiing I 100% don't believe its fake, not at all. I do however thing the video with the whispers is 100% fake. I think the popularity of this video and how it blew up and got him all these subscribers and how they all wanted paranormal stuff led him to make the whispers video.

As an American I usually think of distances in terms of yards (1 yard = 3 feet). A meter is just a little longer than a yard, so for the sake of rough estimates I treat them as the same. It's easier for me to visualize yards than feet probably because of American football, as the field is divided into "yard lines." I have no such quick shortcuts for converting temperature between C and F lol.

He saw a footprint, so I'm thinking someone might have been in the mine with him. The time it took for Frank to pan from the entrance to the back then aim his flashlight towards the back and turn it on, was enough time for them to dart away especially if they were familiar with the layout of the mine. He may have pushed the chain away in the process which made it swing like that. So, it was either some weird person hanging out in a dilapidated mine or a ghost, both options are frightening.

or just another explorer who was afraid Frank was security or the Police. I don't think either of them had permission to be there, they both jumped a gate to get in. They may have been avoiding Frank so as to not get in trouble for trespassing and moved the chain accidentally. Another possibility is that the roof was unstable enough at that point that the vibrations from Frank moving and talking had destabilized the rock over where that chain is barely hanging on. A number of chains were moving, just not as much as that one.

This story reminds me that thousands of years ago it would've been REALLY easy to make ppl believe you were a God if you had all the knowledge of today. Mines are giant artificial holes dug out of massive sections of land. Any number of small repetitive disturbances (wind, water running or dripping, heat/cold cycles throughout the day etc.) can cumulatively create a resonant frequency which can shake the entire supportive structure of the mine which, over enough time, could easily cause the chains to to sway. Frank's "Bad Vibe" came from his experience and expertise about mine exploration safety...not from some subconscious warning of supernatural beings. Stop the chain from swinging, stare at it, and eventually (whether it be minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or more) it WILL start swinging again. GUARANTEED. If it doesn't, you just need to wait even longer.

I have been following Frank's RU-vid channel for what seems like over 5 years now and I have never seen him act dramatically and I have even had the chance to speak with him in the comments section of his videos a handful of times as I too am into mining history, so I have a tendency to believe this was a real creepy encounter of some kind that was not faked

Yes that’s the point a lot of people in the comments of this video aren’t getting, even though Mr Ballen very clearly explained in the video. The first video I believe is actually a real mystery. But it has been proven that on his later videos he used snippets from a “creepy Halloween scary sounds” track that someone found on RU-vid. But the videos that came right after the first one were just regular cave videos, it wasn’t until after the first video blew up that he started making paranormal videos because he saw the attention that they drew compared to just regular mine videos

I've seen loads of mine videos where the chains swing. There will be a reasonable explanation for it IMO. Just because his reaction is genuine, doesn't mean it's haunted or untoward.

I watched this a few years ago when I was into these cave explorers. I'm fairly certain he went in deeper & saw a row of chains swinging. The ground is undisturbed around the couple swinging chains. A wind tunnel from some sourse? His breathing changed, he got quiet & commented how creepy it felt. His character was consistent in his other videos. Had he ever felt uneasy exploring a mine, a more humanistic feeling of sadness? This cave's overall vibe from the jump felt unsettling the first time I saw it & remember thinking "Get the heck outta there". MrBallin, have you ran across the true story of another cave explorer who simply vanished? His friends or g.friend would drop him off & pick him up a few days later. This time it was his g.friend, who popped up in the comments and...yeah. It's such a creepy, bizarre mystery & it's right up your alley plus stir up interest & possibly new clues.
