While enjoying a day on the Ironton Rail Trail, I decided to check out this Abandoned Train Bridge. Little did I know that it would literally stop me in my tracks. The unique thing is that there are two bridges here with two different designs. One goes over land, while the other goes over water, but I was only able to cross one of them. I was also able to find some dates on the rails and found old maps showing when this was in use. So come along and lets check out this Abandoned Train Bridge.

As much as I love these old train bridges, I knew I reached my limit on this one. But I'm glad I was able to share what I did. Have a great weekend!

Thanks for sharing. I am afraid of heights to so I understand your anxiety. I was at Penn National horse track and I was in a booth way up in the air. Looking out the window made me anxious. You got alot further on that second bridge than I would have. I lovebthese abandoned train videos. Off 81 near Enola sits the Enola train yard. Some interesting trains and such. I don't know if you can tour that area or not. It's sort of sad to see abandoned train tracks. I think about all the trains that went over tracks. The people that ran them etc. Cool videos.

Wow those pictures were awesome!!! When you say Ironton, do you mean Ironton PA or Ironton Ohio? Hey don't feel bad about the height thing. I used to roof houses. My ex and I had a roofing and construction business. We would have to go up toe jacks on some of the new builds. If the house was 2 story with a basement that was not yet level out with fill dirt, I would find my self about 4 to 5 stories up depending on the roof pitch. It got to be to much on me. I started feeling scared when I would go up that high. At the age of 42 I hung up roofing on toe boards hung by toe jacks. I just couldn't do it anymore. We all know our limits. ✌

I've been under that bridge many times on both sides of the river, but never got atop it. I have no fear of heights, but my fitness and balance aren't what they used to be so I would not feel safe crossing it either. You made the right decision. Better safe than sorry. That area is rich in railroad history. There was the Lehigh Valley mainline on the west side of the river with the Ironton Railroad branching out from it. The Biery Yard was south of the bridge and you can still see where the tracks used to be. On the east side of the river was CNJ which is now Norfolk-Southern. They mostly run at night on that line. Branching off from there is the N.D.C. railroad (Northampton Development Center) which is a short line railroad that shuttles rail cars between the NS line and the local industries. The N.D.C. is all that remains of the old Nor-Bath railroad. The LNE railroad ran through there somewhere, though I'm not sure what side of the river (I think east). And there used to be street cars that crossed a different river bridge that I believe was south of there and is long gone. I haven't found it yet, but I'm hoping the new D&L extension on the east side will allow me to do so this year. Great video! At least I got a look around up there without having to climb where I don't feel safe or capable. Looking forward to RJ's video too.

What you were looking at was the Jersey Central's Coplay Branch. It was a short connection to a 3 track interchange yard with the Ironton RR. Weight restrictions limited the bridge to only SW type switchers operating on it. The Lehigh Valleys mainline was underneath it. In the 1940's the bridge was heavily damaged by a flood and wasn't rebuilt until sometime in the 1950's. Notice there is only one original Pratt type span remaining in the river crossing on the east side -Northampton, PA side.

Knowing your limits is the key to one's safety Jay. I know the feeling you get all too well. It amazes me the intercateness of all the rivets. Someone first planned where they needed to be, then placed the holes, then set the rivets to hold the whole structure together. All the man hours involved, it's amazing. 100 plus years later still standing, WOW. All the patterns and how they repeat are visually appealing. Great stuff, thanks Jay and RJ for taking me along on this explore. 👍

You are doing such a great thing helping people understand the mechanisms of fears and phobias. The fact that someone else might do cartwheels over that gap is not because they are brave. They just can. What is helpful is watching someone who really, really wants to move forward on that track but cannot this time. It might make others think twice before dismissing what is a real sense of danger to one person and instead, offer support and encouragement without adding pressure. The minute I saw your friend hang his toes over the ties and lean out to look down, I knew this would not be the time for you to push further. Be patient with yourself. I love seeing all those bare trees. Thanks for the photography.

Though I'm afraid of heights just like you are JP, I'd still make it across lol it's not the fall that hurts you, it's the sudden stop lol, and since I know you don't like heights, when you do get up here to film the Starrucca viaduct, I may have to use your camera to film it from the top, it's 110 feet high, I think you'll like making this one

I have been afraid of heights since I was a kid. I was terrified crossing the George Washington Bridge! Forget about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge yikes. I would get pain in my feet. PS I still get that feeling in my feet.

I understand the struggle! I visited the Kinzua Bridge State Park a few years ago, I went out on it but my knees were shaking the entire time!

Smart man to cancel walk when it became too much. The rail brand you showed was for 100# A.R.A.-A rail rolled by Bethlehem Steel. The "F" was the identifying mark used by Bethlehem to indicate that rail. There at least 18 different 100# rail sections; each one uniquely marked. When working on the Hoboken Division of Conrail had an old time foreman tell me about a trackman who would not even cross the Moodna Viaduct (still in service on MetroNorth's Port Jervis line) on the EL's Graham Line in a high rail truck. He would get out, and literally crawl across the bridgw on his hands and knees.

Awesome video man. I just filmed one that I found in the woods near a Horse Farm.

Personally I think it waaaaayyyyy too dangerous to cross that bridge. I have more respect for you not crossing it than the others. I am surprised the bridge has not been removed. Seems dangerous.

I am the same on those types of places. Your mind does crazy things. Even afraid to look down in fear of losing my glasses. Thanks for sharing and being honest. 👍

@@JPVideos81 I cant understand why I'm standing on rocks at the edge of the mountain I'm not that afraid. But walking on a trestle like you were on with open space under me is tough. Tops of open towers or buildings is terrifying.

Good afternoon mate sorry I had a giggle with the bridge thing because I'm exactly the same and even watching it I was like nope not happening lol..I can squeeze into caves nit think twice but heights Is my cyptoknght to..even worse if I notice rust lol. The journey it's self was most enjoyable though and totally a worthy capture the deer Been so close to civilization is something you don't really see here especially in towns so that was amazing to see. The last bridge with its over hanging leaf-less trees added to thr atmosphere so much for me. Amazing job on the photos, I really love and respect friends like Rj who don't pressure one into doing it to so many friends I've known over the years have pressured me thinking it's helpful and it's really not. You gave it a Crack that's what mattered. Have a safe and incredible weekend ahead

So you definitely know me feeling on it. Not a pleasant one, but you have to know yourself. And you're right, being pushed or forced to do it is even worse. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Have a good weekend.

Great video I am glad I came across you. I really look forward to more videos from you. I don't blame you I would not have had the guts to cross that. You getting hurt would limit the videos I can see from you. Less or no where would suck. Thanks so much for everything

The Open hearth furnace (OHF) is a type of furnace that can be used to produce steel using the Siemens-Martin process. It uses pig iron and scrap to produce steel. The open hearth furnace replaced the previous “Bessemer process” for steel production. I live right below Wheeling WV which is an hr from Pittsburgh. Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel made steel all over this valley. I don't think we made rails in Wheeling though. Mostly nails but they did make rolled steel and other types of steel products.
