The breeder of my Khaleesi has taken back a two-year-old longhaired Akita male. The family couldn't keep him. He is sooo pretty! A real teddy bear! They are now looking for a new home for him.
The way he growled as you grabbed his foot but immediately stopped and looked at you when you picked it up was like saying "For real? I told you no and you STILL did it??"

As a long time Akita owner I would say be *very* careful removing a muzzle from an *apparently* docile Akita. They are very muzzle-wise and will simply accept their fate until that muzzle comes off, then they'll go right back to telling you how it's going to be!
My girl got her muzzle off, i only put it on to make sure she would be ok with my sons dog because they are now living together shes awesome with her 2 females together i drew the lucky straw with her

@@vexxa7562 Okay... Thanks for the info.... Dogs are like people... Some challenge you more than others. Doesn't mean they aren't good people/dogs... They are just CHALLENGING😆😆😊
I have had Akitas and like all intelligent and independent breeds they have limits to what they will and won't allow when it comes to touching them. My kids and I could do anything with mine with no worries but someone she did not know was not allowed to touch her at all. The vet once she knew him was allowed to touch her however he needed to for the most part and she would give warning one time if somebody was trying to go somewhere she wasn't OK with. If her warning was ignored plain and simple they were going to get bit and it was going to be bad, she didn't ever nip. She saved my ex from rape or worse. She could climb chain link fences and when my ex was heavily pregnant with my youngest son she got out of the car at home and a man ran up the driveway and grabbed her and attempted to drag her into the bushes, the dog was in the fenced side yard, saw it, climbed the fence and attacked him. Tore him up really good and continued tearing into him until he managed to get off the property and my ex said the dog immediately stopped at the property line even though their was no fence out front and the guy drug himself off down the street. She called 911 and they arrested him where he was laying in the road bleeding about 400 yards from our place. Turns out he was wanted and had outstanding warrants for rape and assault. She was one of the best dogs I have ever had.
That is horrifying. Thank goodness your Akita was there to save your ex and the baby. These dogs were bred to be bodyguards and take their jobs seriously. Glad there were no repercussions against your dog.
Jager to other dogs: "So I ate a treat, and I got all dizzy and sleepy. This woman I've never seen before took me into a room and started squirting me with water and touching me all over. She started shearing me like a sheep, then stopped and put a giant pink bandage around my head. Then she hoisted me up like they do on Broadway to make people fly. Then she gave me a blow dry. Then she took off the pink bandage and started shearing me again. Then she brushed me, and sent me home. It was so weird!" Other dogs to Jager: "Dog, you need to stay off the drugs!"

Growling isn't that big of an issue. It's basically just them telling you that you *really* need to stop. There wasn't any real aggression. Just being very annoyed. If he really wanted to go crazy, I doubt that the metal bar would have kept him in place. Very good boy, just not a lot of patience
If I'm super drowsy and am not allowed to sleep and someone starts detangling my tummy hairs without my consent or giving me a manicure against my will, I think I'd growl, too. 😂😂😂
I have been in a similar situation but at hospital, not a beauty salon. I was of course consenting, but it's a whole lot easier to just lay back and let them do their thing than to complain about it.
What a stunning and clever boy. He vocalised so well and in such a controlled way. I get that some people find growling scary but for me, a growl is excellent communication and avoids any misunderstanding. Vanessa, you read animals so well and you help other people understand vocalisation and how to better handle animals.
My old man was part akita. I didnt understand the breed. He was also pyrenees and lab crossed. So many of your akita grooms make me understand him more (rip) and realize we did pretty well with him. Respecting boundaries was a big deal with him. He loved us but would growl at me if I even patted him when he wasnt in the mood 😅
He was all bark and no bite because you genuinely respected his bark 🤣 I have not 1 scintilla of doubt that he meant business with those growls, holy moly, what a majestic creature 🥰
The only American Akita I know is the sweetest big baby ever. She comes to the daycare I work at and I was SO nervous when I saw we were having an Akita come in but she was only 4 months old when she started daycare weekly. Idk if it’s because of the breeder, the owner or a combination of the two, but she’s got the BEST temperament. She’s extremely tolerant of everything in terms of grooming, different dog personalities and she’s so friendly to everyone she meets! I keep warning my coworkers “if you keep saying you want an Akita, know that they are nothing like this one” 😂
He’s a GORGEOUS dog. I love the fierceness of his personality. He has limits and expressed them well. He’s the parent who says “stop” once and kids get it together😂😂😂. He’s a good boy❤❤❤
They can be, for sure! Or if these parents are not physically abusive, they may be verbally abusive. 😢 I don't think it's ever healthy for children to be afraid of their parents; it's incredibly sad and sets many children up to be afraid of confrontation or to become bullies themselves. Respectful of their parents, definitely. Afraid of them, no. However, I've seen kids who I know aren't abused and generally listen/mind on the first request.
I always knew from my dad's body language & tone of voice when I needed to stop immediately. He never struck me or cussed at me it was just mutual respect. Several kids in my neighborhood also understood this yet were never struck or cussed at. So yeah respecting when someone tells you to knock it off by their body language or tone of voice is not a sign of abuse just mutual respect.
@@Sumerlamountain Yeah this. It is parents who can’t get respect any other way, that resort to hitting their kids. And in reply to the people before you, demanding respect =/= abuse. Despite not really being the type one would immediately respect at the time, my nieces that I took care of every summer respected me completely, because I was super considerate to their needs, and did everything I could to make their days fun and happy, while still making sure they did their chores. Even though they fought me hard at first, I never had to ask twice for them to do anything after a month, because they loved all the extra things I did for and with them, and attention I gave them. It was the same thing with my unruly half brothers I met later in life. Point being, you don’t have to be a big macho guy to get mutual respect. Give respect, and you will get respect. But if you give respect and don’t get it back, demand it, or make it known that’s unacceptable.
Growling is communicating. When my "little one" barks or growls, strangers always need a new pair of knickers. She has a voice like made for a church choir🤣. Many Akitas are very talkative. Similar to huskies. Others are rather quiet. Like my Khaleesi. If she growls, then I know she's stressed about something. But that doesn't mean she's going to bite or tear someone apart. It just means that I'm getting a bit upset.
He looks great, you did a wonderful job. I'm wondering if he would be more behaved if he wasn't sedated. My really sweet rottie gets real fussy/cranky when sedated but still functioning. He was sweet when barely awake after his teeth cleaning, but was real cranky after the Benadryl the doctor prescribed for nail trimming. Hope you get another chance to groom him. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.
P.s. I convinced him to let me cut his nails in trade for his dinner. (Don't panic, at 140 pounds he could afford to miss a few groceries.) Here's what I did. I fixed his dinner as usual. I sat down and showed him that there was food in the bowl. Then I showed him the clippers... He walked away. I went and did something. A little while later, I called him over and showed him the food, then the clippers. He just sat there and he gave his paw when I asked for it. But, he left when the clippers approached. A while later, I repeated. This time I was able to get a snip! Progress! He got his dinner. Everytime I had the patience, I did this. The next session, I was allowed to trim, one nail (a couple of snips). Then I was allowed to trim his nails without bribing him with his dinner. But if he refused, I just waited until dinner time and went through the routine. Usually only cutting one foot at a time. Eventually, he got where he would doze off during the trim and I'd even get to use a nail file to get anything that might snag. 💖🌞🌵😷
That is one beautiful dog. I thought when he was falling asleep in the shower was the best part of the whole video. Thank you for letting us watch you work. I have learned so much about different dog breeds while watching you, you are incredible teacher, and a humanitarian for taking care of all those dogs that no one else will touch. I wish you a very happy new year. Kathy.
I used to live with an Akita (not mine). He got a bit naughty once and chewed my bed up, and I came down like hell fury on him. He ran outside and wouldn't come back in until I'd calmed down lol. We got on well after then.
Was it at 3:00? Because I laughed too the way Jager looked at Vanessa and the way she was watching him. 🤭 Vanessa makes me think Anne of Green Gables as a modern day pet groomer, lol. ❤
Everyone that's seen my Akita automatically assumes she's vicious (and she is 1000% on the opposite spectrum), so judging by both Jagers size, his breed and how (awesome and unimpressed) he looks the other groomers might have just been intimidated by him more than anything!
Beautiful American Akita. As a former Akita owner I would say you did the right thing to stop immediately. He won't hold a grudge against you, cause Akitas have a really long fuse so it takes some time to really stress them out, but if they growl it's important to take it seriously. On a well trained Akita it won't be the first, the second or sometimes even the third growl but if you push it too far they will do a short reminder that they said "No! Stop it!" to you. And that could hurt quite a bit, cause that snout is as powerful as it is beautiful.
My phone's brightness is kinda low right now That to say, Jaeger's face looks like an infinite black hole of nothingness on my end, and I think that fits
What a absolutely beautiful and stunning dog Jager was well behaved in the bathtub and he wasn't to bad in get his groom except when getting his paws 🐾🐾 done if I was doing him and heard him growl like that it would have put me of doing him it just goes to show you how a fantastic dog groomer you are you that you can handle a dog like him a lot of groomers would have turned him away so that you Vanessa for taking the time out to do dogs like this ...I would like to take the time to appreciate it all the hard work that you put into grooming all these absolutely beautiful and amazing Dogs and Cats as well you always do a fantastic job on everyone of these amazing Dog's and Cat's as well. I get very anxious around big Akita's. My Jack Russell was attacked by an Akita/Bullmastiff mix and while trying to break up the attack, I got bitten in the mouth, tearing my lip almost off, and had my index finger almost degloved. My Jack made it, missing having a pneumothorax by about a mm. When she took off this guy's muzzle, I immediately tensed up. Nope. Muzzle stays on.
Vanessa please, dont immediately start going towards the dogs after immediately after removing the muzzle. Even though dogs are trained still they might need a min (after the removal) of the muzzle.
Since I found your channel, I have always admired the work you do so much but today...hats off to you for your patience, love and understanding for Jaeger!👏👏👏
Sometimes when you remove the muzzle I get so concerned. I know you're a professional. I mainly just watch and like your videos, but, I just want to say I'm so grateful for the care and effort that you give the sweet puppies, cats and pig.
In some fantastic realm, Vanessa is the girl who tames & then trims Dragons, Yetis, Woolly mamoths & other fantastic beast. Her legendary skills makes even the hissiest of sabre tooths tuck in their death daggers 😂
My grandma used to feed her giant Great Pyrenees CBD treats to calm him down before his grooming appointments. If she didn’t do that, he’d find a way to make a break for it lmao
Wow all that fur makes him look very cute. It was great you managed to get him bathed and tidied up a goid bit.... I love how you show you are not frightened of him and respect him and care as well.. Thank you for sharing Jagger with us....
Today was when I first learned that Akita's also come with long hair! My 120 pound super-fluff rescue Woofie's DNA test came back as Akita and German Shepherd. Since adopting him last year, I kept doubting the results, because of his extraordinary long fur. I saw no Akita aside from his big plumy curled tail. Then along comes Jager, who looks just like Woofie in every way, and has taught me that Mr. Woofs does indeed look like the 50% long-haired Akita that he is!
It's a rare recessive gene trait in the American Akita breed. I don't know if it occurs in Japanese Akita's. But neither of them actually breed for it.
@GoogleEqualsEvil It most likely comes from long haired shepherd genes. "American" Akitas are made from Akita Inu, Mastiffs, and Shepherds. I have heard two reasons for creating the American Akita. One was to try and save the breed as they were getting scarce, the other was to get a bigger Akita, improve on their capabilities with breeds that did similar thinks.
I'm an owner of a long haired American Akita as well. Male, 5yo and quite reactive with other animals. We've never sedated him for grooming appointments, and it's really hard to find someone willing to take him in. We tend to bathe him only once a year, in the summer, to reduce stress. He always leaves the appointment absolutely exhausted and usually the groomers aren't able to do a perfect job (mainly because they get scared once he starts growling). Our family understands the challenge, and we hope to get our hands on some proper tools to start bathing and grooming him at home, with the care and comfort he deserves.
Our bull arab/staffy acts like you're killing him if you touch his paws. He's six months old so hopefully we can train him to tolerate having his paws played with. Thankfully no growling yet!
Akitas give very little expression or forewarning before they bite/attack. Sometimes you can't hear their growl because it's so low. For example, I feel her growling because the lead vibrates in my hand but nobody hears it and she's just standing still - not easy to read. Once she was sedated, knocked out on the vet's floor. When the vet came in, I thought I heard a truck driving in the nearby road. But no - it was her growling on the floor. She's also very good at taking the muzzle out and even though I know her, I seriously fear for my hands if the muzzle isn't on at the vet's.
I know you're busy, and I'm not sure it's been tried, but I wonder if having a short visit where he didn't get a bath every few weeks might get him more used to going to a groomer? Still, I think you both did a great job working on patience and tenacity, respectively.
I had an Akita just like this for over a decade. He was a sweetheart till he turned three. He loved me but hated/wanted to kill 95% of everyone else. My own fault for buying a pureblood---all those trees fork. Just mutts for me from now on.
Aww, he's so cute! He might have been a bit rude but over all he seemed pretty good. Though if he was sedated it can be rather difficult to move and stand. I often compare it to walking through sand, everything is just that little bit harder.
You should do my 16 year old Yager. He does not like having his nails done at all by his mama but they get done by the vet so I don't have to deal with it. He seems to like it better too probably because they do nothing but one stands there and feeds him Snackeez while he's getting it done. He's blind from cataracts and has very very very very selective hearing and weighs an enormous 10 lbs.😊
Seems like this type of dog would do better with more frequent grooming. Once a year is not enough. Regular exposures to grooming would help him become accustomed to the process and also would prevent matting.
I often wonder if sedation contributes to aggression in some dogs. I know people act differently from one dose to the next as well as one person to the next. I was very combative the 2nd time I was I guess you'd say mildly sedated for delivery as opposed to recently being fully sedated for surgery and just taking longer to come out of it but not being combative that I was told or remember, just as an example.
I had this happen to me once, that the animal fell asleep while work on it was done. Diffence was, the animal was a horse, and I was currently holding one of its hooves up, so the farrier could work on it, when the sleeping horse shifted its weight on that foot. We both fell, the horse was wide awake afterwards, and I had some backpain.
I hope one day you'll notice my comments and try letting dogs like this lie down while you do their nails and paws. My boys were scary if their feet were lifted, but had no problem if they could lie down for this part of their groom.
Lmao, it never gets old seeing Vanessa being brave next to such large dogs. My bravery tends to plummet the more of my arm or head the dog can fit in its mouth. Sometimes ya gotta risk it for the fluffels though.
I used to feed a security guys dog with huge pieces of de-battered flake, like near foot long pieces of fish, he knew and was so gentle but just sucked it down, didn't even chew, not many ppl touched him. He was beautiful
Might be harder to move but could you put something across the walk in tub or install a clip so you can use a belly band for the dogs that sit too much?
I love Akitas as well, but would NOT recommend them for most people. Highly intelligent, stubborn, and with STRONG guard dog instincts make them a difficult breed for inexperienced owners.
I had a dog that would growl when he was happy. Like I think he was a cat in a previous life. He would let out these low growls that would make you think he was about to rip out your throat, but it was him purring. I had to tell so many groomers this, and found one who had a dog who did the same thing
My cattle dog border collie mix growls mostly. Playing-growl, hungry- growl, wants to go to bed- growl. Wants outside- growl, it took a minute to understand that’s her language
