Do you know guy's that "California" comes from the portuguese beach "Praia da California" in the County of Sesimbra, central Portugal ? California is a latin origin name that means: "Hot Oven" (Cali + Fornia). It was named by the portuguese explorer, José Rodrigues Cabrillo, that was born in the parish of "Cabril" (that's why "Cabrillo - from "Cabril") in the municipality of Montalegre, northern Portugal, in the XVI Century.

To answer the question as to whether is "The Algarve" or simply "Algarve" one needs to take into consideration that the Algarve is a region (and a province) of Portugal, and not an independent state. In Portugal, we usually place the article "O"/"A" (The) before the subject when referring to specific regions, as in O Minho, O Porto, O Douro, A Beira, O Ribatejo, O Alentejo, etc., (you're getting the idea) therefore the correct form is "The Algarve". Languages can be tricky but I hope this helps, Great video, by the way.
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 года назад
Thanks. This was our hang up though because we don't call it The Porto or The Lisbon or The Alentejo. The other tricky thing is the Arabic origin of the world and article "Al". Here's what we found. The name Algarve comes from Gharb Al-Andalus (Arabic: غرب الأندلس‎, gharb al-ʼandalus; "The West of Al-Andalus"), or just Al-Gharb (Arabic: الغرب‎, al-gharb; "The West"), the name given by the Muslims of Iberia to the region to the west of Andalusia. Fascinating stuff really. - Josh & Kalie
@miguelcoelho3877
@miguelcoelho3877 3 года назад
@@ExpatsEverywhere I can see the pertinence of that point of view. And that's probably the reason why some people would insist on calling the Algarve simply "Algarve" -- because as the "Al" bit means "The" ("O") it would appear to make the use of "O" redundant... Except that, as a loanword, "Algarve" has been taken into Portuguese as a whole word, i.e., there's no separation of its different parts from its etymological root (because most people in those ancient times did not bother with conducting a thorough study over such matters). And the same could be said about myriad other words and toponyms left behind by the Moors which have been adopted (and adapted) into the different languages spoken by the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula after the Reconquest. Fascinating stuff, indeed. And, "This was our hang-up though because we don't call it The Porto or The Lisbon or The Alentejo." If you were a native Portuguese speaker you kinda would as in (the regions of) "O Porto", "A grande-Lisboa", "O Alentejo", etc. As I wrote before, languages can be tricky...

We don’t say “the New York” and would be just Algarve, we can’t translate “o,a” into English in this situation. In Portuguese makes sense to add “o Algarve” “vou para o Algarve” but in English “I’m going to Algarve “.
@miguelcoelho3877
@miguelcoelho3877 3 года назад
@@slanwar, I don't agree. As I've mentioned before, Algarve, the Algarve, is not an independent state, but a region of one. As such, i.e., as an easily identifiable region of a sovereign nation, it must, IMO, be referred to as (the region/province of) The Algarve. For example, would you say, "I'm going to Canaries" or "I'm going to the Canaries?! Or "I'm going to Cote d'Azur" or "I'm going to the Cote d'Azur"?!! Or "I'm going to Azores" or "I'm going to the Azores"?! (Heck, even my spellcheck engine wants me to put the article "The" before the subject!) And we could say either "the State of New York" or "Upstate New York" But this is not even a "proper" debacle. If you prefer to say "Algarve" in English, without the "The" it is really up to you... There are much more pressing matters in the world right now than debating one another over semantics! Take care.
@ExpatsEverywhere

Loved Veronica’s take, smart lady. It very much depend on what you want to find, but I completely agree with her opinion. Chose a quiet place to live, whenever you want to party or be around a bunch of people it’s only a few kilometres away, so it’s never really too long of a trip. You guys probably know by now that Portuguese people can be very warm welcoming to anyone, it’s all about feeling the local vibe and fitting in. It doesn’t take long before you feel at home. By all means find people from your country, it’s very important not to cut all ties in terms of your culture, but stay open to make friends with some of the locals. They will help you through some of the difficulties during your initial period. Quick tip, I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it before, please don’t confuse us with the Spanish. There is no bad blood between us anymore, in fact in the border regions the populations deal with each other quite well, it’s just that we like to be acknowledged with our own cultural identity, as the Spanish like to be recognised with theirs. Rivalry yes, especially in sports competitions, but by and large no hate. This is mainly to the newcomers, coming from across the ocean most might not be aware that we are not a Spanish province. Aside from that, enjoy everything Portugal has to offer. It’s really nice that you guys appreciate the historical aspect of some towns, most of the Portuguese like that and we don’t want to see the Algarve being turned into an extension of what exists in Spain all over their south coast. We want to preserve the regional iconic identity. I’m sure we can all learn and benefit from each other. All the best to y’all.

@@ExpatsEverywhere don’t mention it, I actually appreciate the work you guys do in helping out foreigners to settle. Some people find this odd, but if you think about it, most Portuguese people don’t know through what extents you need to go through to stay legally in Portugal, as we have all of that already as national citizens. So it’s important that someone points them in the right direction. It’s quite stressful to try to understand and learn what you have to do and where to get it. And we really don’t want people to be stressed over here. The sooner you see things working out, the sooner you start enjoying the experience of being here. Let’s allow for this covid mess to fade away and if you haven’t had it, you’ll have the chance to try some of our hidden culinary gems, like snails and fried cuttlefish. And don’t think our snails are anything like escargot because they aren’t. I’m not worried at all, if you confuse us for Spanish the penalty is that you have to buy that person a beer :) So be careful around football stadiums especially during important matches, you’ll go bankrupt. I’m joking of course, what we will do is challenge you to a showdown. We each draw a Sagres or Super Bock and the last one to finish loses :) Stay safe and keep up the good work. There is plenty to see, so try and visit as many places as possible, cause in every nook and corner there’s a story to be told for those who are willing to listen. And there’s your hidden treasure, the immense history that this country has will allow you to travel back in time in the arms of your imagination. We may not be a wealthy country anymore, but boy are we rich in so many other ways.

Thank you for providing such informative content! Without trying to sound too negative, my wife and I recently returned from a trip to Portugal. Lisbon was our focus going into the trip. We spent two days there and left because of how busy, crowded, and overly touristy it felt. We very much liked Oporto, and the real standout was Algarve. Praia da Salema was a nice, calm time at the beach, and it’s inspired us to look for a property along the coast there. Time for us to get serious about learning Portuguese. Boas viagens!

I love the synergies that the Portugal-based vloggers are having! I started with Algarve Addicts (Nick Robinson), then found Veronica's channel when we were honing in on the Eastern Algarve and came across your channel in May. So cool to see you "together" and kudos on the question list - you really honed in on important questions. We are 3 yrs to retirement in Portugal (D7 = path of least resistance), still doing a lot of research, and weather is a primary drivers. I'm also drawing the conclusion that expat presence helps with transition. We absolutely love Porto, northern Portugal & the Douro Valley (plus Galicia region in Spain), but the Algarve seems to tick all of the year round living boxes. Flights are booked for September and I'm hoping US tourists will be allowed in by then. Keep up the good work!

Check with some of your Portuguese neighbors to find out if €150K Euros for the place you bought is inflated or not. Don’t compare it to California, where the average salary is 10X higher. (We rent in Galicia and have been schooled by our Spanish friends that we are paying twice as much for our apartment as we would have paid a few years ago. It’s half what it would have been in the States, but that doesn’t necessarily make it cheap by local standards.)

You have to search on the embassy web pages. I have idea that something similar exist for the Polish descendent but could be confuse. I think there are more than a few people who are intentional about where they want to live in Portugal and why. For people from some cities in the US, they still desire the city life, but they understand that none of the cities in Portugal compare in size, so they look at the cities: Lisbon, Braga, Porto, and Coimbra. There are also people who don't want to live in the hotter areas (the same people who don't move to the southern US to retire), so for them Lisbon is actually as far south as they want to go. My daughter, who will be attending university in London, has already told me that she would probably not visit very much if at all if I moved to the Algarve because it is too hot. Just mentioning this because everyone doesn't enjoy the same climate.

I've seen other videos where the folks talked about winter time living in Portugal. They complained about terrible moisture problems. Moisture collects in towels, bed linen, and clothing and a lot of tedious, daily effort is needed to get them dry. Several factors were described as causes: Home construction that had poor ventilation, poor or no insulation, lack of installed HVAC systems. They also talked of outside temps in the winter as warmer than inside, largely because of no HVAC. I believe that these problems were encountered more in the north of Portugal, where it's colder. Could you comment on this as it relates to Algarve?
@ExpatsEverywhere

Hi Mitch, Veronica (American in Portugal) and Nick (Algarve Addicts) are the two channels based in the Algarve and they have years of experience living there and should be able to answer any direct questions regarding that. In general, it doesn't get cold in the Algarve. In general, it does get cold in central and north during the winter. When we say cold, it's not like Canada or northern US States. It's 40s and 50s but can dip lower at times. - Josh & Kalie

So yeah, we're old but still like to have fun. Sounds like The Algarve is a place to seriously consider. Great interview again. I just wanted to clear something up, but I am by no means an expert in arab. That being said: As I understand it, names in Spain/Portugal starting with Al, such as Algarve, Alicante, Alhambra, Alentejo, Albufeira, Almancil, Alfama etc. etc. are of Arab origin and the "Al" part of the name means exactly "The". So saying "The Algarve" is to say "The The Garve" and this is not the correct way of saying it. I am sure someone here knows these things better than I do, so please weigh in and correct me if I am wrong. Ciao. Jan.

Hi, for the American passport, assuming you don't run out of room in your passport by filling it up with stamps, 10 years. For other things like residence visa/residence cards/immigration visits it's very country dependent. Currently, the trend in Portugal seems to be to visit the immigration office (by appointment) and get confirmed for 2 years. Then 2 more years followed by 1 year to make a total of 5 years. At 5 years, it's possible to apply for citizenship, at which time, these kind of visits wouldn't be necessary anymore. - Josh & Kalie

Respectfully, Margot. Have you tried to buy a home in Portugal? - Josh

@@ExpatsEverywhere Not in Portugal - but I have bought several real estate properties in a country where real estate agents work in the exact same manner as in Portugal. For most of the European countries this is how it works. My buying or not buying a house in Portugal has nothing to do with the way Veronica came across. Europe is different from the USA - isn’t that the reason why a large number of Americans are moving away from their own country ? Embrace and try to avoid constant criticism or stay at home….

@@margot8651 Touche', young lady. My appreciation of you & protecting your local digs. As an adventuring American I have difficulty defending what many have refered as the "ugly American". Rest assured, respecting your homeland, the people & culture will be top priority when I get the privilege to visit this gem of a country. Salute Margo

I am not sure whether her gestures and they way she talks is disrespectful, but if someone would ask me about my experience with real estate agencies in Portugal I would say, in a very respected manner, that they are one of the most incompetent ones I have seen in all the Europe, with a lot of dangers for potential renters/buyers. I would also add greedy and incompetent lawyers to this, since one is needed in the process. Not everyone wants to make it home here, buying a property can be also for business purposes, and I think it is good when people tell the truth about their experience.
