I think hendrix chained multiple marshalls JTM45 amplifiers because you can see another coiled cable from the input jack of amplifier#1 to another input jack of amplifier#2. When you insert another cable into the input jack it puts a resistive LOAD on the input jack front in so this changes the input impedance. It also will "tone suck" but it changes the front ends divider network. You should try using a Dummy Load for the input jack of amplifier#1 to stimulate it closer to his live monterey tone.

@retrolee

At the Monterey Pop show he chained his main Marshall to two Fender half-stacks, which I'm guessing were Bassmans. Whatever the they were, that combo was magic--no need for pedals, no buttons to push as he mentioned at one point. I can only dream of what that must've sounded & felt like from 6-10 feet away !!!

@@mr.yellowstrat3352 Thanks for your estimate ✌️🎸 Fortunately, that very amp is very well documented and tracked. The Amplifier (s/n 7026) was built in Mid to Late 1966 by Marshall Amplification. The Amp was sold to Jimi Hendrix on October 8th 1966 at Mannys. There is a photo taken 10 days later in Paris and photographic evidence that the Amp was also the one he used at the Monterey Pop Festival in 67 and other Gig's from that tour. Another photo found was from The Marquee Club, London on March 2nd 1967 and then another from the 14th Nov 67 at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It is true to say that this Amp is well travelled and was with Jimi during the Best and Most Important Shows of his life.

Hi Mikel, Excellent content! These in depth recreations are so interesting! Thanks! As well as settings, signal chain, amps and speakers-I’m curious about two other multi part variables: One-You shared the speakers used in your 2x12 cab. What is the impedance rating of each speaker? How is your cab wired (series, parallel, etc.)?How would you wire two closed back 2x12 cabs to get sonically close to a single 4x12 loaded with 20 or 25 watt Celestions? Two-Do you use current production tubes or NOS? Type(s)/ brand(s) that you favor? Have you tried E34L vs. EL34 vs. KT66 in your 1987X? I have a Germino Lead 55LV (w/ tube rectifier) and Mojotone 2x12 with G12 25watt greenbacks and I’m curious if I made correct choices involving speaker, impedance, wiring of cab, tubes, bias, etc??? Thanks for any insight :)
@MikelBluni
@MikelBluni 3 месяца назад
Thanks Peter ✌️🎸 The cab is wired in parallel (8 ohms). Haven’t played two 2x12 and cannot tell you how to do that. Usually I switch to a 4x12 (16 ohm) if need be, which is rarely the case 😀 I do not have special preferences for tubes. My 1987x is currently equipped with a simple matched pair of JJs EL34s. I use KT types for JTMs and keep the Plexis with ELs. Some time ago I‘ve switched the V1 tube from 12ax7 to 12ay7 - if I remember correctly, to reduce the gain.✌️🎸

But at Monterey, something else was going on with his guitar. Like on Wild Thing, the guitar broke up at times what sounded like 'a battery dying' in his fuzz. You can hear it most on Wild Thing's verses on the VII-I-VII-I part, after he sings, "But I want to know for sure" VII-I-VII-I. What is that?

Five way switch on Strats actually didn’t come out until the late 70s. Before that everyone just balanced the switch in between bridge and middle or middle and neck, for those tones.
@chriscampbell9191
@chriscampbell9191 3 месяца назад
And some, like Ed King, had their three way switches wired for the in-between tones... With Ed King, Position #1 was bridge only, Position #2 (which most of us would think was middle pickup only) was neck only, and Position #3 (which most of us would think was the neck position) was bridge + middle out of phase. Very different way of doing it, but it made it easier for Ed to switch to the in-between tone when needed.

@@Gma7788 fair comment, but to be honest its all in the end just the eq going up and down, regardless of pedals creating the eq difference, or layering it, if it sounds like it, it is it. 1 is indeed 1, not 2.
