Welcome to another episode of Down n Dirty Woodscraft ! Today, I'm going to show you an old-school technique that will make your matches more reliable and powerful. This is a skill that was used by our ancestors 70 years ago, when matches were the main way to start a fire. You won't believe how easy and effective this method is. Watch the video to find out how to transform your ordinary matches into super matches! If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel for more woodscraft content. Until next time, stay safe and happy camping!

My experience with dipping match heads in wax was that the wax would smear all over the striking surface and no match could be lit on that striker afterwards. Did I do something wrong?? This is definitely much better as melting wax is not going to drip on your fingers and you don't need to create a fire hazard while doing it. Keep 'em coming!

good one! i did this with warmed filtered liquid pitch from a pine, and used any strike matches, it works just the same, waterproof plus an accelerant, great stuff! Clear nail polish is a good thing to keep when you're out camping, you can seal up all kinds of stuff, having it on hand gives so many ideas when you're just messing around, create little parts and structures for tinkering, use as a glue for small components, electronic repair, shoes, ballcap, bag seams, tents, tarps, so many things. we used to paint a thick layer on the back of our phones too, as a home made case of sorts but let it cure several days or you'll be feeling high 😅

And for painting Chigger (red-bug) bites to control the incessant itch! Red finger nail polish seemed to work better for Chigger bites for me. It still worked for match water proof.

Here’s an idea: take 1 or 2 of your dipped matches, and put them unlit into the tinder, maybe with the heads near each other. Then lit another dipped match, and put it in the tinder, with head near the others. The other matches act as kickers for the lit match. Many variations of this idea come to mind.

Yes, I've burned my leg many times with fluid leaking out ny zippo. It happened enough for me to now carry my zippo in a pouch on my belt, with a ranger band around where the lid and bottom meet which reduces evaporation. Beyond that, "two is one, one is none" so.. I generally carry a ferro rod as well. Waterproofed matches is another redundant fire starter which I always carry in the woods.

👍 We prepare everything for bushcraft and survival. So way we should not prepare matches to? Another good tipp ... by igniting the match, hold in the same time, your tinder bundle directly on the match. So the whole ignite energy can go instandly on the tinder.

That's great, Blackie. I remember hearing or reading about that too. I never tried it though. I thought that by dipping the match in the nail polish, it would make the match hard to strike since it had the coating on it. I remember the good blue and green tip matches. Took them camping with me all the time. I don't understand why they stopped making them? 👍🔥
@brianbartulis9709
@brianbartulis9709 8 месяцев назад
I've not looked for them since a purchase in early 2000s for my trailer stove. But two things come to mind why rare: Auto ignition ranges, and there's a chance the whole box could go up if dropped the box. Crazy to imagine the latter, but looky what happened to gasoline cans. There must be a buncha folks that live amongst us the use matches and gas cans with boxing gloves on. (-:

Hi Blackie according to whst I've read on the Internet the declining availability of strike anywhere matches is due to International shipping regulations banning the transportation of the precise chemicals needed to make them so.....if that is true if you find any buy them with alacrity here in UK we used to have Swan Vesta matches those things were so volatile you could "almost' strike them on a window pane, only trouble was they were really short so you had to be quick

Blackie, Nice trick. The lacquer in your workshop would also work for that. About 25-30 years ago we couldn't purchase strike anywhere matches in the local area. I stopped by a regional supermarket in the next town down the road 12 miles from here is in another county and they still sold them. I think insurance underwriters were worried they would be sued so they forced the stores to not sell them anymore. We purchase the red/white or blue/white tipped matches when we find them. No wood stove anymore and our propane range has an electric started except when the electricity is out.

While I much prefer the UCO Titan match trimmed to fit a good matchbox, EXOTAC etc. I also heard that if ya want to go to the fuss you can carefully wrap several small turns of Gorilla Tape around those big long kitchen matches, ADD this to those taped up ones? That'll fire it up 😂
@tikkidaddy
@tikkidaddy 8 месяцев назад
Yeah I really miss those old Ohio blue tips. So much is done in the name of safety that is nothing more than excuse for making a substandard product, you can't even tell people to stop and THINK and read and follow directions with a ZIPPO or EXOTAC , any fluid lighter that they don't get their feelings hurt. 😂 TURN that Titanlight upside down, fluid goes into lid if it has migrated, put it back in or on your fire lay and WIPE the lighter and your hands off! They had much rather make a video on how bad something is, based on a lack of forethought, whine, and complain just for views
