I really like that Bocchi doesn't have anyone toxic or abusive in her life that caused her to have social anxiety. She just has it, for no particular reason, which is totally realistic.
I like that a lot too. Sometimes there are real home life things that can contribute to it, but definitely not 99% of kids feel that way like how it is in 99% of anime. Good representation of a more standard group of people.
Ryo does not "steal" money from people. She, as a holy existence, is simply graciously accepting donations from those around here, as payment for her divine presence
a minor thing i and some people have also noticed about nijika that i think is worth noting; in every other anime, nijika is pretty much the picture-perfect image for a protagonist. think about it; a dead parent, a sister who sacrificed her dream for her, and the dream of becoming a well-known band with the drive to achieve it by starting one herself. bocchi, in that kind of anime, would be the quirky side character who's there for comedy relief. instead we see that story unfold through bocchi's eyes and focus on her own little story of growing out of that shell to finally be the guitar hero we all know and love.
Ahhh... now you reminded me of that side story of Ichiji's sisters. The series just can't stop being painfully realistic, like seriously, the copium her sister did is just straight up a punch to the gut.
What I love about this anime is that sometimes you can’t tell what is “reality” and what is Bocchi’s imagination because it’s all one big fever dream 💀
I think what sets Bocchi apart is that it does not romanticize social awkwardness like a lot of anime. It shows that Gotoh missed out on a lot of stuff and when she actually interacted with her friends she began to do much better. It's really important especially post COVID when people especially teenagers didn't talk to many people in person
It isnt putting a cute/talented anime girl romanticing enough? If it were a ugly fat weeb I bet the show wouldnt have gotten that much attention, and i think like that because I saw watamote and another example is komi san
Yeah exactly! I couldn't put my finger on what made Bocchi so holistically relatable and optimistic but it's because she (and her friends) represent what I hope to accomplish myself with friends in the future, and what we couldn't do during Covid. I feel like I missed out on a ton but it isn't all over we still have plenty of time to make good memories together.
Komi-san has like crippling social anxiety or something, but somehow its nonexistant enough that nobody except the main char who's basically a mind reader actually notice.
OMG these tweets😂 "I want Bocchi to step on me" "I'm incredibly racist for some reason" "Bocchi the rock is literally you cos ur lonely Bocchi the rock is literally me cos I'm a rock We are not the same"
I just watched Bocchi the Rock this week, and I didn’t really relate to the social anxiety as much as others, but what I did relate to is how realistically it portrayed high school musicians and music nerds. I felt like I’ve had half of these conversations with my musician friends in high school. I wasn’t really in a band, even though I played guitar, but this is why I love the series. It’s also just a bunch of fun.
@@_human_1946 "Yet". The series hadn't shown more of the high school life after all and fully focused on the band. So you can go for the manga or pray to the gods that the series will get S2 lol
Massive shoutout to Kerorira, who was the Chief Animation Director and Character Designer. They worked on a staggering 500 to 600 key animation cuts where an average project would only be 100 cuts at most. Initially, they just read the manga and fell in love with it, so they started to use their connection to ask every producer they met about adapting the manga. They finally met Mr. Umehara, the producer who worked at Cloverworks. Kerorira sold his idea to Umehara, and they began working on it since 2019. Goes to show how much Kerorira loved the source material and wanted to see it adapted.
@@Javid_74 You can tell the production team were basically given freedom to do whatever they want. Like that part where the girls were eating local snack which was digitally scanned. It's so uncanny I thought they ran out of budget or something lol
It's incredible how a basically brand new team of directors and animators and unknown VAs were given free reign by the mangaka and created an instant classic.
The moment when Gotoh arrived at school wearing merch in the hopes SOMEONE comes up and talks to her about it was too relatable and I had to pause it for a few minutes
With all jokes aside, I think BtR has one of the most incredibly likeable and well written main casts of any slice of life I've ever seen. The dynamic between the main four feels so incredibly natural and they bounce off each other perfectly. It works for serious moments, it works for comedy and it even works in the music where you can feel the reflection of the character the wrote the lyrics for each individual song. Plus they seem to represent all 4 extremes of the sort of social spectrum in terms of introversion to extraversion and socially inept to adapt, so no matter who you are there's a character you can relate to. It's a show that holds a special place in my heart for not only perfectly representing some of my worst insecurities, but for also making me feel better about them by showing some work past those same struggles, and I don't think it could have achieved that if not for how perfect the main four characters are for each other
And it's a two steps forward, one step backwards kind of working through. She's not instantly cured, she still has problems and some days are worse than others.
Nobody’s gonna point out the two imposters among the “she’s literally me” tweets? “I’m incredibly racist for some reason” “I want Bocchi to step on me” Caught in 4K 🤨📸
One aspect i really like is the attention to detail and how realistic the instruments and gear are. Not only the way they are animated during kessoku bands performances but how you can recognize what type and brand of instrument it is especially in the guitar store in the last episode. You see all the guitars on the walls and can easile recognize the les pauls, fender strats, Evh guitars and so on. And you can even recognize the different brands of guitar strings like the D'addario XLs and ernie ball slinkys.
I loved seeing all the gear I know and love. I didn’t even notice the strings. And I use both of those brands. I might’ve gotten too absorbed in it and missed all the details.
Bocchi reminds me a lot of my fiance. She has crippling anxiety but wants to be social. The way her and I met was the "how do you befriend an introvert?" meme. Found her in college and adopted her, but then we fell for each other
"found her in college and adopted her" it's literally what happend to me at the start of the year in engineer school, it was a welcoming party for the 1st year and I ended up alone against a wall, then a guy adopted me and told me to come with him and introduced me to the member of the videogame club of the school. Extrovert who adopts introverts are the best.
One thing I love is that the cute thing they do is... thought out? They learn music, they actually sound better over time, there is real progression in their skills. Bochi anxiety is a awesome hook since when she gets confident she can play at a god level. So it does not feel like an ass pull when she gets over her anxiety and rules the band
Who is Nijika? For the blind, she is vision. For the hungry, she is the chef. For the thirsty, she is water. If Nijika thinks, I agree. If Nijika speaks, I'm listening. If Nijika has a million fans, I am one of them. If Nijika has ten fans, I am one of them. If Nijika has only one fan, that is me. If Nijika has no fans, I no longer exist. If the whole world is against Nijika, I am against the whole world. I will love Nijika until my very last breath.
Do you want an upgrade to your copy pasta The Nijika Pledge Since Nijika is the paragone of human virtue without equal past or present, she is most resplendent in love, tributes and accolades. For the blind, she is their vision. For the deaf, she is their music. For the mute, she is their voice. For the anosmiac, she is their aroma. For the numb, she is their feeling. For the depressed, she is their happiness. For the disillusioned, she is their hope. For the pessimistic, she is their optimism. For the disadvantaged, she is their champion. For the marginalised, she is their justice. For the oppressed, she is their salvation. For the righteous, she is their symbol. For the enlightened, she is their muse. For the erudite, she is their education. If Nijika speaks, I listen. If Nijika questions, I answer. If Nijika orders, I obey. If Nijika opines, I agree. If Nijika fears, I assure. If Nijika hopes, I dream. If Nijika is happy, I am jubilant. If Nijika is angry, I am apoplectic. If Nijika is sad, I am disconsolate. Nijika is my ideal, Nijika is my romance, Nijika is my passion. Nijika is my strength, Nijika is my compass, Nijika is my destination. Nijika is my language, Nijika is my culture, Nijika is my religion. Nijika is my ocean, Nijika is my mountain, Nijika is my sky, Nijika is my air, Nijika is my sun, Nijika is my moon, Nijika is my world. Nijika is history, Nijika is present, Nijika is future. If Nijika has a million fans, I am one of them. If Nijika has a thousand fans, I am one of them. If Nijika has a hundred fans, I am one of them. If Nijika has ten fans, I am one of them. If Nijika has only one fan, that is me. If Nijika has no fans, I no longer exist. If the whole universe is for Nijika, then I am for the whole universe. If the whole universe is against Nijika, then I am against the whole universe. I will love, cherish, and protect Nijika until my very last breath; my successors will love, cherish and protect Nijika until their very last breath.
Everything about this show is perfect. Bocchi is literally me. And the voice actress is literally Bocchi too. On the Bocchi Radio segments it becomes really clear that her personality is very much like Bocchi too. Definitely a perfect casting.
That room wallpaper picture joke is still unsettling in the anime, even though they absolutely nailed the comedy of it and definitely, used the perfect cut
the most breathtaking scene (for me) in the anime is in episode 8, where Bocchi just shreds. even though i've re-watched the anime multiple times and never got bored of it, it's still my best scene in the anime.
The ticket quota episode is my favorite. She literally progressed mostly on her own, yes with the help of a drunkard but she didn't know Kiruki on a personal level at the time and was mainly doing this either out of blind trust or because she has social anxiety and can't refuse or even get away from Kiruki. Ultimately, she performed in front of a live random audience, met her quota, and gain that small bit of confidence. Compared to all her progress, I feel like here she skyrocketed, she grew exponentially and I love it. I hope to see a Mob Psycho level ending someday to Bocchi The Rock or maybe even better.
Problem is that I know that I am not exactly like Bocchi and I can handle some of the situations that she is in a lot better than she can. However, some of the stuff she does is basically me having those "she is literally me" moments stick out so vividly. One such example of this is that I have multiple bad memories of interrupting a conversation that I am no way in hell involved in because its about a topic I like and I just reacted exactly the same way as she did.
I'm a guitarist and honestly the school concert scene where Bocchi's string breaks is the coolest and most hype scene in any anime that year, maybe ever ever
I think one great writing thing that is also present in the manga is that the joke itself is also the plot point. Like, how Ryo is a bad spender, then Ryo is willing to buy Kita's guitar and eat weeds, and then to the cafe scene with her. Also when Bocchi meets Kita for the first time, tells Ryo and Nijika to become party people, and they meet in the street because of buying energy drinks, just before Kita runs away. It also shows how willing they are to listen to Bocchi's request. Also a little bit of a spoiler, the failed crowd dive is actually also a big plot point.
I can say that Bocchi is basically Nichijou, but with actual context and less random stuff, but still hilarious, relatable and with a high production 💀👌✨
The original manga is a decent base, but the anime just knocks it out of the park. It's very nice to see such passion flowing from almost every facet of the anime, and the music is particularly great alongside all of the other creative visual elements and voice acting. I can't say I relate to it in the memey surface level way, but it does hit quite hard on a deeper level. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Given the premise and the source material (decent but not particularly standouts), it's very easy to imagine a studio keeping the same story and characters, but phoning it in and pushing out a forgettable seasonal CGDCT. That the studio and voice actors managed to completely knock it out of the park is extremely impressive.
"So many times in media, introverts are portrayed as "Leave me alone, I don't want to talk to anyone." Which is not necessarily true." Ryo The Introvert: "Am I a joke to you?"
I relate to Ryo alot more, when I was younger I was scared of people... after working in retail though...I do not like humanity... savages humans are, but I still will go out with friends and do "normal" things. But both bochi and Ryo are relatable in many small and major ways.
What I admire about this anime is how they can cover serious mental illness problems with comedy without the need to belittle the sufferer himself, which in this case is Bocchi with her social anxiety. This shows that is smart comedy is honest comedy that comes from our own anxiety. Not only from Bocchi's life struggles, but their struggle in building the band from scratch is really realistic and relatable (I was in a band for several years ago, so I can relate to that). Struggle they're looking for money just for gigs in small music clubs, selling tickets, promoting their bands, etc. What I can conclude is that this series shows the anxiety of the author as well as how passionate her and her team are in comedy and music. Relatable characters, relatable struggle, comedy and genre of music that I like for a long time. This anime has skyrocketed to become my top 3 anime series of all time, after Gintama and AOT, even after 3 months the impression still hasn't gone away in my head. . . . *ps: I think I wrote too much
Taking improv classes is a really good step in overcoming social anxiety. Assuming the classes are good, there's a gradual training in thinking on the spot, accepting that not everything has to land funny (a bad joke won't ruin a show), that others will support you instead of shutting you down ("yes, and" is a cardinal rule of etiquette), and ultimately how to perform in front of a crowd.
Bocchi does two things right out of the gate that hooked me, and they both happened in the first episode. The first is that it takes time and dedication to become good at something, the second is that changing your core personality is not simply a matter of just going “today I’m going to go out and talk to people and make friends”. Growing up shy it just doesn’t work that way, though people that aren’t shy seem to think it does, and media has pushed that idea so much that even shy people think that’s the solution.
the "imediatly get praised and become a puddle" is my main gut punch, cause the few times it happens i could not even know how to respond in any way that can be humanly acceptable, to the point where i try to change the theme or aim it at the other person imediatly even if i dont think they deserve it or everyone is saying it to me, like that one time we had to do some amateur voice over (something im really interested in) and LITERALY EVERYONE SAID REALLY NICE THINGS ONLY ABOUT ME, EVEN THE ORGANIZERS, i really wanted to die in that moment, and then i hear myself what i said and want to die even more because to me its hot garbage not even worth lisening a second off
Hitori is probably one of the most relatable anime characters in existence, considering Bocchi the Rock's audience mainly consists of introverts (this does not apply to everyone obviously.) Most if not all people can relate to her in some way, and that is why I think she is a candidate for best girl of 2023... behind Ryo Yamada (I will die on this hill) We understand Hitori better than anyone else.
@@radikat. I dunno dude it's pretty weird to say the audience mainly consists of basement dwellers and "scummy ( _wtf?_ ) introverts" and then follow it up with "most if not all people can relate to her" So is it popular because of basement dwellers or because most people can relate to her?
I LOVE this show and I seriously never expected to enjoy it this much I came into the anime expecting some K-On clone but holy fk it is so much more than that! The characters, the comedy and the music 🤌 God tier stuff
The full Kessoku Band Album is a fucking banger. The best part is you can hear each instrument separately Bocchi's Lead guitar on the right earphone, Kita's Rhythm Guitar on the left, with Ryo and Nijika's Drums being distinct and not just background percussion. Unfortunately if I ever have to wear just one earphone I gotta go to the settings and switch to mono audio And the Bocchi Cover of the AKFG song for the ending of the finale was beautiful. And Aniplex uploaded the version of the song Where the string gets cut and she has to play slide guitar using a plastic bottle ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6wAQRxcLUeE.html
The album was very popular and had a month-long special shelf in several stores in Japan. Several guitar shops in Japan are reporting increased sales coming from people looking for bocchi guitars
i love baselines in those songs, they dont let aside the other instruments and just focus on the guitars and the bass sounds reaaaally good, the music in general is great in that show I also loved the Sick Hack song that Hiroi plays when she takes Bocchi to her show, you find it like Watashi Dake Yuurei - Sick Hack in case you are curious about it
Bocchi the Rock is definitely one of my favourite animes and this video essay has become a favourite of mine! I loved the editing, the jokes were really funny and you talked about lots of the things that I also loved about the show so thank you!!!
Bocchi came as a surprised to me for being so good and it caming out of nowhere too. Also, if you're looking for another really good Slice of Life and CGDCT anime I'd recommend to watch Do it Yourself! from the same season but centered around a DIY club in the near future where manual labour has been decreased due to the advances in technology. It's really good and the cast is great too, also the opening is such a bop.
I always wanted to learn guitar but never did so..... Thats why i initially started watching bocchi, but turned out it was more about social anxiety..... Its take on social anxiety was totally different from many other animes with the same concept and for me, it was the most relatable one... the way they show the difference between a loner and someone lonely was beautiful... its comedy works like magic and the music is good too...Mostly i could see bocchi doing what i couldnt lol. A perfect anime!
I can’t believe Yoshino Aoyama(Bocchi va) haven’t gotten any major role before this she’s so good or maybe she’s just perfect for the voice of Bocchi in the audition she was the only one who make the author Aki Hamaji laugh out loud while reading the line and Aki personally pick her
I love this series seeing that it covers various personality types from introvert to extrovert where various people can connect with, & besides K-On I can't help but think about other series like this one like Komi Can't Communicate, Hitomi Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu, & Senryu Girl
[Haven't been by here in a while. I wonder how young Brandon is doing.] He's covering Bocchi ! Excellent choice. He Continues to be articulate and insightful. Makes good use of clips from the show to make his points. Not rambling over all the points, he wants to make but focusses in "chapters". Glad to see Brandon keeping quality anime reviewing alive. Thanks, Brandon
i related to nijika the most in this show... even though i am an introvert, but difference between me and boochi is that i don't have any confidence issue at all i can talk to people easily and new people too only if we share someting in common but if we don't share someting in common then it just turns into an uncomfortabe situation... the scean of buff rainbow nijika with an tank top drumming away with 2 guitars i related to that is an spirutal level
10:54 whenever that happens i always remember that one clip Dragoon used with the japanese fisherman that said "Don't think about the past, you can't change that, and don't think about the future it makes you worry" and i forget it again.
In all honesty I relate more to Ryo more on the behavior part. There are times that I see how I relate to Bocchi, but I don’t think I have much of a social anxiety more than I just don’t have anything to say to strangers. If I need to speak up then I do, but I’m content with the friends I do have. Love the show though, since it gives insight on social anxiety that I haven’t seen from any other show
And for story it's closer to Girls und Panzer. You think it's just another "nothing is going on" but turns out there is something which you didn't expected.
Also hits hard to musicians and critically towards people in a band, Bocchi the Rock hits hard on the concepts of being in a band and the work and stress there is to being in one, especially the skills playing alone and to playing with a group
I really love your videos, they are so high quality. And you introduced me to so many amazing shows! With your videos. I have the higest respect for you. Looking forward to the next one😃
Bocchi is literally me. No other character can come close to relating to me like her. There is no way you can convince me that I’m not Bocchi. Bocchi could not possibly be any more me. It’s me, and nobody can convince me otherwise. If anyone approached me about this not possibly being me, I immediately shut them down with overwhelming evidence that Bocchi was me. Bocchi is absolutely me; it is indisputable. Why anyone would try to argue that Bocchi is not me is beyond me. If you held two pictures of me and Bocchi side by side, you’d see no difference. I can safely look at Bocchi every day and say, “Yup, she’s me.” I can practically see Bocchi whenever I look at myself in the mirror. I go outside, and people stop me from commenting on how similar I look and act as Bocchi is. I chuckle softly as I’m assured every day Bocchi is me in every way. I can smile each time I get out of bed each morning, knowing that I’ve found my identity with Bocchi and I know my place in this world. It’s amusing how similar she is to me; it’s almost like identical twins. When I first saw Bocchi, I had an existential crisis. What it Bocchi was the real me and I was the fictional being? What if she actually became aware of my existence? Did she have the ability to become self-aware?
I really liked the realistic portrayal of how it feels to be an anxious introvert that does want friends. I also spent most of my school days alone because I had no idea how to interact with other kids. Turns out in my case it was less social anxiety and more general anxiety and undiagnosed autism, but the feelings are still there. I also appreciate that it shows Bocchi learning to manage her anxiety and not let it control her life, but in a realistically slow and step-by-step manner. This isn't something that magically goes away, but anyone can find small steps to take that slowly move them up the hill. And I like that being less anxious doesn't really make her less awkward, just awkward in a different way.
I saw that bocchi was really popular and I read the manga because I tend to enjoy mangas more than anime and I was dissapointed, never would have guessed that the anime was contributing so much to the humor!!
Absolutely agree on the jokes not always working in anime!!! Even as a massive SpyxFamily fan myself, the jokes you showed were definitely great examples of what you were talking about! I maybe chuckled a few times during the show, sure, but whenever I read the manga, it’s INFINITELY more hilarious! Comedic timing is such a MAJOR component of humor, and it feels like anime (and also shows in general) just don’t seem to quite get it right, but with the manga, it’s timed to how you envision it to be timed which makes it much funnier bc you likely time it perfectly in your head
The definitions of introvert and extrovert are rather simple! Introvert: being around people is exhausting, so you need to recharge by being alone Extrovert: being alone is exhausting, so you need to recharge by being around people
7:02 And Chowder and also SpongeBob Squarepants. I'd say Chowder was the king of mixed media before Bocchi stole that crown. Oh how times have changed.
Brandon and bocchi the rock made a good point about introverts. It's not that we hate socializing, its just that we lack the abilities required to partake in a small talk conversation or smth like that. In fact I myself am an introvert, but I love talking to my friends and love other people, I just suck at conversing
10:00 This moment BROKE me! I laughed so hard at this for a good while, I could barely breath. The picture those two had in their minds, and the perfect timing on the cut, I love it!
If you liked this anime, I've got a manga recommendation for you A manga called 'she doesn't know why she lives' gave me more emotional damage than bochhi eve could and during a shorter time span
I think this is one of the best shows of what living with anxiety in general is like. You think of everything that could go wrong, even if it's the most outlandish thing ever. Even if you muster the courage to do something, you still feel nervous, those dark thoughts plaguing your mind like a tumor. Although Bocchi improves, she's still herself in the end, which I think is perfect. It adds a sense of realism to her character.
Dude I’m a band kid and when I saw bocci the rock I decided to pick my old guitar up again, starting lessons tomorrow, and can’t wait to shred on bass and normal electric guitar!
Bochii is literally my spirit animal, and I mean LITERALLY. I have had Half of her depressing internal monologues and thought process during high school and still in college.
Wacthing (listening) your videos at my job, has become a daily routine. Your voice, your emotional / comedic take on these breakdowns are addictive. Deserved sub
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! Brandon brings it! Also... moe moe kyuun!!! ✨🖤✨ Edit#2 I wonder if you've seen Hinamatsuri Brandon? Because now I'm going you'll do a video on that. And point out the hilarity that is the Tshirts Hina wears and how they relate to the show, and how similar they are to the signs in Bocchi.
