Awesome presentation of the material. You’re a true teacher. You can flat out play, but that’s not what’s making you a great teacher. Lots of incredible players who can’t teach. Not bashing those guys because teaching is a skill. You got that skill. I could go on and on about what makes your lessons work so well for people studying with you but there is no need to because everybody that comes back to you already knows it. Im not a beginner but watched anyway because I wanted to know your approach to independence because I knew your take on this problem would help me approach some other aspect of where I have problems. Practice is obviously indispensable. But the ideas are as critical. How to think about something how to mentally approach something. You can practice all you want and still struggle. Many times it’s looking at something in a different way. I only developed the that basic level of independence shown in this video through frustration and way to much time and effort. I know that if I would have had this video I would not have been frustrated, I wouldn’t have had days of feeling depressed that I would forever suck and it would have come together for me much quicker. Thanks for the work you put into this. I personally appreciate you and it also amazes me how there are people like you who sacrifice their time and money to just help a fellow drummer. Whether you know it or not, I think you are one of the most important people in the entire professional drum world today. If the was a compiled list made by any industry journal or publication your name should be on it

The best teachers know how to impart useful drills that are _musical_ as well. You are definitely one of them, Mr. Brown. Those first two runs have such _wicked_ groove-potential right there; but the concept didn't properly start carving itself into my brain and spinal cord until I slowed the tempo waaaaay down. Like, waking up still blind-drunk-in-a-strange-dark-room, slow. Took about 40 minutes to get up-to speed, for the initial 're-programming' to 'take.' Your lessons are freaky-addictive! Glad I found your channel. You're a helluva teacher!

Just get one. Drums are the only instrument out there were you have incredible fun from the very 1st time you sit down. It’s the only instrument that you don’t have to be go at to enjoy. In no time you can put headphones on and start playing many songs. You don’t have to learn songs beat for beat, or note for note like other instruments. You can always dumb down a song to your level so you can still enjoy playing songs easily. You will not ever regret getting a drum set. I ask people all the time... how many ex piano and guitar players are there in the world. Then ask them how many ex drummers. Drummers are always drummers. Yeah we’ve all had times maybe where did play due to certain reasons but we always were still drummers and we always come back to it. Drummers play for fun. With most other instruments, people played it for a specific reason and don’t touch the instrument unless for that reason like high school band, recitals, my parents made me, etc. I can’t count the people I know who played an instrument but weirdly aren’t in love with that instrument. They would choose to sit down and play it for the fun of it.

I have been playing guitar for 40 years, and drums for less than 10. I got started with a cheap acoustic kit, got decent cymbals and drumheads, and eventually got decent enough to do a few gigs, but now I play for pure pleasure. I have just bought an electronic kit so I can go to the garage play any time I want. I hardly play guitar at all these days.

Mike, my posture sux too. I have lots of back problems. But watching Rob and others, I see how important this is. And not just while playing drums. I noticed how much higher the snare is positioned to his legs. I think mine is too low and will start to adjust immediately. Also seen on other Drummer vids. Just got Gibraltar motorcycle style throne that hopefully help with the saddle anathesia I get from sitting just 20 minutes. At 68, with lots of lumbar back problems it really sucks to deal with. Happy Drumming

Like magic, the good Mr. Beatdown always seems to have help for something I'm working on. While it's not directly what's addressed here, I've had an issue forever with something I love to horse around with, the mambo. The way I was taught the mambo, the bass drum does straight quarters. I have a tendency to match my bass foot to the ride on the 'uh' of 2 rather than directly on the '3' all alone by itself .. (if that's not clear, I'm sorry) I've let myself cheat on this because it doesn't sound bad but I know I've been a bad boy. I just sat down, got all patient and slow and visualized the bass drum on the upswing of the ride hand as teach' said, which happens to be smack dab on the '3' and it definitely helps me gain the feel I was looking for. I'm thinking that some repetition will fix this once and for all. Thanks once again, sir. The best drum guy on the web for practical advice.
@blujay2084
@blujay2084 4 года назад
For the record, this also helped me with a little frilly thing with an added double on the ride cymbal that I've been trying to get a better feel for that I do on real basic boom-pop type rock time and 1-2 country stuff...... R=ride L=snare F=kick...... kick is constant on 1 and 3, snare is constant on 2 and 4 and the ride is 1 2 3 4 until we try the little frill........ the time pattern= (RF)_(LR)_(RF)_(LR) .... the little frill = (RF)_(LR)_(RF)_(LR)RFR(LR) .. This is probably as clear as mud but anyway, the technique as described by teach' where we feel the kick on the ride upstroke rather than just out in limbo somewhere really helps to keep that kick solidly down the middle on 1 and 3 where it belongs and not leeching onto the ride like a pest little brother the way it wants to if you let it. Thanks again. Good practical stuff. I'm definitely a better player in a lot of ways for having run across Dr. Beatdown.

In the beginning, He's just showing the end product of what can eventually be had...big deal! When first taking lessons, for me, seeing the end product first got me excited/ motivated to learn all the boring mundane stuff first, vs just being taught exercises/ fundamentals without seeing a glimpse of the end result first. So thank you Rob for showing what you did in the beginning.

Fitting in the 16th notes on the kick with 8th notes on hi hat wasn’t too tough to work through naturally in my practice. What I have issues with now and have been working on is lining up the same 16th note kicks with 16th notes on the hi hat. Since these kicks land when my left hand hits the hi hat (right hand lead), it feels very awkward getting what I’m trying to play with my feet to line up with what my hands are playing. Fascinating how self taught drummers sort of figure these things out on their own as they develop. Great lesson though sir!
@squanchysquanch1840
@squanchysquanch1840 Год назад
Side note: when I play the 16th notes with my right hand solely it is easier to fit in the kick properly. Maybe because I’m playing at a slower tempo, or need to develop my left hand more, or a bit of both?

Ok so I have been (kind of) instinctively playing 16th note offbeats for years but could never figure out in my head how I was counting it. That wood block has just destroyed everything I thought I knew...

Videos like this always make me feel worse than I am. Even thou it's not an issue and developed over the years of playing. I'm doing cross overs and doing left hand hi-hat hits and keeping the left going. A funky Primer was good for me too, it;'s only a $11, if you can find it.
