Thank you so much for this. I work for an indie Audi/VW/Porsche shop and people seem to think these things are built with $5 parts and snap together like Legos. It's insane. Thank you for showing video evidence that major car repairs are priced nearly equivalent to the original price of the car. Is a Nissan Versa cheaper to repair? Sure, it was also 1/5 the MSRP and has 1/10 of the luxury.

I feel like if people want the most inflated price possible they use dealership pricing which just leads to clickbait thumbnails and people saying "nothing worse then a cheap Audi" but the same could be true for a used and abused Lexus/infiniti/Acura with over 200k miles that you took to a dealership. Keep up the good work on the videos! I watch them as soon as they are posted!

But would the Acura or Lexus be falling apart like this? It's arguably better made to start with, albeit still a complex luxury car. When you drop back to comparing economy sport compact cars like a Mk5 Jetta GLI like Charles' original car and an 8th-gen Civic Si, there is definitely a very big difference in the length of the list of common problems, with the VW having a much longer list.

@MV740 You are wrong, you are thinking about Haldex awd, this S4 has Thorsen permanent awd with 60/40% split rear/front, and if it came with sport rear diff it has torque vectoring which induces a slight oversteer on hard cornering making the whole experience pretty great. Speaking from experience of owning APR stage 2 plus dual pulley tuned S4 with stick shift, one of the best cars I ever owned.
@bokiNYC
@bokiNYC 3 года назад
@MV740 No worries man, A3's, TT's have Haldex awd system that's mostly fwd till the wheels start to slip (or even sooner depending on various sensors) and then the clutches in Haldex engage to transfer up to 50% of available power to the rear wheels. A good guideline if you’re wondering which style of AWD you have is, generally, Transversely mounted engines (Engines with Cylinders aligned “left-to-right”) use a Haldex System, while Longitudinally mounted blocks (Cylinders aligned “up and down”) use a Torsen System.

I had a 2008.5 S4 DTM which was fun, but man did it have so many problems. The biggest issue I had before I got rid of it, was the engine harness melting issue, because it was a V8, it was even more compact in the engine bay and it led to the wires and the shielding to melt and short on the other wires. It threw all kinds of codes at the ECU and it was about 4 grand just for the harness to come from Germany and then another 3-4 grand in labor to pull the entire front end and engine to replace it. That car costed me so much money, warped rotors, and replacement pads were very expensive too....eugh I loved that car, but also hated it so much.

I did the timing chain in October 2020 here in Germany on my S4 B8. 6600€ was the cheapest I could find around Munich area. I also replaced a headlight because of some dirt on the lens (loupe). I got an original one in mint condition from eBay local classifieds for about 140€, and sold mine for 120€. therefore 20€ for a headlight. I also had the clutch slave cylinder replaced for cca. 300€, and also replaced the gearbox, differential, torque steering, and servo steering oils. Otherwise it seems to work just fine. I still have the supercharger oil left for changing. Luckily I have a manual gearbox which has proven itself to be pretty reliable. I can't be bothered to hurry up to fix the only three issues I have with my car, namely the door lock on the left passenger door, the fuel cap lock, and somehow the wire loom (?) that goes to the alarm horn. Oil consumption seems to be about 1L/10.000km.

Hydraulic vales were around 800 euros, parts and labor, rod bearings, 650 and AdBlue secondary heater was 300. That is in total 1750 euros which is 2060 USD. He chose to use OEM parts, but was also offered an option to use 3rd party parts which were nearly half the price. I own a 2012 A4 Allroad with the infamous 2.0 TFSI. I bought a salvage auction 2011 S4 92k miles for $6k, I put a $250 used hood, $140 used headlight shell(transferred all internal components from the cracked one that came with the car), replaced the mechatronics boards (real reason why it was salvaged) for $550, serviced the tranny in the process for another $200, so for about $7k I have a decent one. Everything but the rear view camera works. The interior looks brand new. I would not pay $1.5K for the one you've got mainly because of the high mileage, so I get 100% why the owner sold it for what it seems to be too cheap. Next step is to address couple of minor things in preparation for the final step which is tune the engine/transmission.

But yeah there are some deals every now and then. Just waiting for one. Also if someone puts an ad and they don't answer when you ask to see it, then you know that's no a real seller. That Audi definitely sounds like a nightmare. Lol

I have the torque converter gearbox on this engine in an A6. Have you heard of clutches falling in those 6 speed ZF automatic as well? I guess the converter won't ever die due to it not having rubbing parts like in the DSG. I'm looking forward to see this car be fixed enough so you can go have fun with all that power and the quattro drivetrain!

I'm suprised that this S4 came this far mileage and low maintenance wise 😜 The look and feel are very nice of Audi's in general and you can never skip maintenance on these cars, it results directly in financial punishment. But well maintained and always warming up the engine correctly befor pushing a VAG group product to its potential you will have a lot of fun in these cars 🙌🏻

This is basically how I got a $700 BMW. Previous owner beat the crap out of it, and it wasn't worth the cost to fix it. I put some elbow grease in it, and now I have a running driving car to play around with. It's been to the drag strip a couple times already.

I purchased an 08 a4 s line Quatro 6 speed manual.. for 1500. It didn't run. Didn't even turn over. My friends told me I'm craze. Im not a certified mechanic. But I do dabble. Never worked on a German vehicle usually worked on Ford, Chevy. Or even buick. Well I put a starter in got it to crank. But didn't start. So I started going into the motor. I figured it was timing. And I was correct. The chain tension broke. So I ordered a new chain and belt. I ended up ordering a new head with valves. Gaskets. Tore it apart and put it back together.. I forgot to mention that I was doing all this out side at first. After putting it back together. I got it to run. Drove it about 5 miles. And it started steam from the engine. And out of the pvc. . So I looked at it. So I was a little upset. So I did the head again. And again. So I took the stock head and new head to get tested.. the stock passed. And the new one had to be shaved down 4 thousands. Short story long. Vehicle ended up having a seized balance shaft assembly as well. So I decided. Rebuild. So being the first time ever Rebuild a motor. I was set to get the car running. I rebuilt it. New clutch, rebuilt broken turbo. And now it runs. I have a few issues. With it still. But hey it was my first Rebuild. Love your videos very informative. Ty

I figure I saved a bunch of money by doing it all myself. Lol. Issue i am having. Is on initial start. There is a brief knock. Goes away and runs great. Until the engine warms up then when I take my foot off the accelerator the oil pressure warning comes on and the knocking starts. It's not loud. But when I give it some gas it goes away. Light included. Could this be the pcv valve or hoses? Or some kind of vacuum leak? I don't think its mechanical. Since it goes away.. what are your thoughts. And second is i put in a new battery in the car. And now I don't hear the fuel pump kick in and it doesn't turn over..

Holy crap! How much for a new/rebuilt transmission?? Just goes to show that you should always avoid "bargain" luxury cars with lots of previous owners, the majority of whom probably couldn't really afford to run that car... :D Oh, that and to always go for a manual transmission when it's an option. DSGs might be fun (for some folks), but they're more expensive to buy, require more maintenance and when something does break, ... well.

Keep your oil changed and at the proper level. And if you hear a loud rattle at startup get your timing chains serviced. Do not wait on this. Or you will have a $7K+ repair bill.

I want a 2005 s4 convertible love those cars but man the thought of having to do timing chains on a 4.2 again makes me not want to buy one lol. It’s really nuts how expensive these are to fix. Last time I did chains on a 4.2 it was about 3,000 bucks in parts now I put a new clutch in and some things like that which didn’t need to get done but ur already there so it’s dumb not to do but man that’s 3,000 bucks for Parts and a good 35 hours of work. Then you think about buying a camaro or something like that where you can spend a fraction of the price and get much more performance.

This car is so beat I'm probably one of the few people that isn't surprised you got it for $1500. Yes, most aren't this clapped-out, but if it's normally a 10-15k used car in good shape and it needs 20k in repairs, 1500 seems like a fair deal. A lot of people just want to part ways and be done with their money-pit, especially a fancy-pants euro car that normally is more expensive to repair. I like to think of myself as being self-sufficient and capable of taking on a project, but a car like this would make me tap out real quick. I'd have to at least be an experienced VW or Audi tech to even consider a car like this.

a car like this would only be worth the repair if you did the repair yourself....... as much as possible....... and really shop around in parts, and it would cost even less because you estimated the timing chain and the transmission full price ...... while the timing chain can be done easy while the transmission is out of the car ......... great video ....... hope to see more of your Audi's project.
