ALSO WATCH: What Makes TARGET of VIOLENCE ( • These PREDATORS Show E... ). Victim Selection Criteria for Bullying and Violent Crime. Psychologists have known for years that human predators select their prey based on signals given off by their potential victims. In a matter of seconds, the predator acquires a sense of who is and isn't a suitable target. For every victim that is attacked, many more are past over. What are the criteria that predators use to select their victims?
What does a Violent predator look for?
Like a wild animal, the human criminal predator wants an easy conquest. He does not want his job to be any more difficult or hazardous than it has to be. They seek those perceived as weak, submissive and unlikely to fight back. Criminal offenders don't want resistance and he certainly doesn't want to be injured himself. A sign of strength or defiance, whether blatant or implied, is often sufficient to cause him to abandon the predatory process and look for a more "cooperative" victim.
If they can help it, bullies don't pick fights with people who will pound them into the pavement! They won't select people who will confront and challenge their behaviour. Rapists, muggers, abusers and bullies look for someone they can dominate and control.

There’s an American fellow named Tim Larkin that has a fight style he developed and markets under the name Target Focus Training. Same principles, and some of the defensive arts that has actually stayed with me over the years. Very effective stuff, resulting from tons of study on violent trauma causes and results, largely studies in sports injuries and penal system injuries. My two biggest takeaways were always that a) my brain is my best weapon and (also my adversaries and is the equalizer for size. Turn it off and he’s done) b) whoever delivers the first injury is odds on favorite. And I learned the correct definition of injury, which is a loss of function. Pain is irrelevant, but if I blow your ACL out with a stomp, you ain’t chasing me when I bounce out. And collar bones break easily, which turns someone into a one-armed assailant, which is good for my odds. Cheers!
@fightscience

Agreed. Causing injury is the key thing here. Pain is irrelevant if the Bad Guy is in alcohol or substances.

@bigl6322 It's a massive challenge to get it into people's thick heads about how TFT works and that it's not about fighting per say nor about who's coming out best, but about decrementing function in the would-be attacker to render him of no danger or threat. I have been in one of Tim's seminars and it's life changing. I also did follow up classes once a week for around 2 to 3 years in Sydney with one of his certified instructors. Never had one injury in all that time. TFT is hands down the best and to be highly recommended to all. Your clavicle example is exactly the one I try to explain to people. But seems like they're thinking, "But that's not fair".

I’m partially disabled from accidents I had while on active duty. I’ve never been a tough guy or thought that I wanted to fight anyone and I’ve taken some verbal abuse and just got the heck out of the place I was in in order to avoid getting in a fight. Because I’m a coward? Truthfully, that is part of the answer. I never wanted to find out if an aggressive person could punch me out and stomp on my head or cause serious permanent damage. I never wanted to risk getting into legal troubles and ruining my career. Or, don’t laugh, what if the aggressive guy slipped as I was throwing a punch and I hit him full force right in the Adam’s apple or in the temple and caused permanent damage to him? What awful repercussions could possibly follow from that? These days I don’t drink and I don’t go to bars or go anywhere alone late at night while intoxicated. Watching these videos gives me a bit of confidence. If I keep my wits about me I believe I have a better chance of defending myself against an aggressive person long enough to make an escape to safety.

Its so funny youve got this topic today. I just saw a vid about a mr.universe competitor who works as a police officer. Can not remember his name, maybe ronnie coleman. Hes been a cop for years and the dude is huge! I mean thick asf and a monster. He said in all his years working hes never had one person attempt to fight him but smaller officers get challenged all the time. Size does matter when crims are looking for prey.

I practice Muay Thai but most of the fights I've had in the street always end up in a clinch and then broken up by someone. Usually Ive found throughout life that people will jump at you when they realise they can't handle the punches, best to have a combination of styles so you can switch, id certainly say judo . Whatever style you use, it's messy and ultimately doesn't end up in knockout. Men are very hard to knockout tbh it's probably not good aim to do that.

Situational awareness or presense of mind, quick physical reactions or reflexes, mental strength or toughness, composure or self-confidence, resourcefulness, the instinct or the will to fight back and defend yourself, knowing when to fight back or when to just run away as fast as you can, avoiding people places and situations that potentially lead to heated altercations or violent encounters, and your martial arts/fighting/self-defense skills and techniques (if you have any or some) which you have spent long periods of time practicing and training, can drastically increase your chances of successfully defending yourself and surviving potentially violent self-defense encounters. Speaking based on my personal experience as a self-defense practitioner.

At 2.40 mins the attacker has his weight on his left leg facing the stairs. A solid strike with the inside of your left foot driving his knee at ninety degrees to natural motion towards the wall will break the knee joint which will mean he goes into shock. Giving away a deadly technique I hope nobody needs to use. Good video.

@@Radtradcath it's complex to answer. History has taught us that these people exist on every level of our existence. It's the classic nature vs nature debate in psychology. Meaning are people born this way or are they created by their experiences and environment. What we do know in psychology is that it is often a combination of both. Some people simply have a predisposition to violence and pain, give them the opportunity and reason they will act out.
