On this episode of Animal Analysis: The Horned Grebe!
Grebes, such as the horned grebe (Podiceps auritis), are not closely related to ducks, or other waterfowl. For a long time, they were treated as sister to the loons, though that all changed with molecular phylogenetics. it turns out that the closest relative of the Grebes is actually the flamingos.
Animal Analysis dives into the life history of different animal species their geographic ranges, diets, how they breed, and the phylogenetic trees of their closest relatives.

A new bird for me, although i knew the name. They swim so very fast!! And their dive is so fluid like a streak and they’re gone. Their mating ritual is beautiful. Thanks much. I’m going to check out your other videos. :)🦩not a🦆🌷🌱

great vid!!! :DDD the only thing is i almost gave up watching bc of how loud the wind blowing in your speaker was :'( with headphones it's rlly rlly loud. i know this can almost never be avoided, but consider muting/decreasing the volume of the grebe clips? (i'm assuming you record your voice over the footage!) thank you for sharing, this is so cool!

Thanks for watching! Yes, the wind is quite loud in this one. in the most recent video i decreased the volume of the footage, so the wind isn't getting in the way.

Honestly, I too would be confused about the horned grebe. I, upon first glance, may think it was a duck. I would doubt myself after I looked at its beak though. I'm glad I watched this video.

agreed. I had to watch several times to understand that horned grebes are closest to flamingos. Do horned grebes fly at all?

Honestly, most people actually think they are ducks. Unless of course they are into birding/zoology. Same with coots, gallinules, etc.

Nobody over 4 years old thinks that is a duck... basic education, biology, etc...

@@SideWalkAstronomyNetherlands in my experience lots of people i've encountered do think grebes are ducks. I've shown photos of horned grebes to college age people and their response is: "isn't that just a duck?" Then I tell them they're actually closer related to flamingos.... Now if they are into birding/zoology then most of them do know the difference.

You know that phrase, "walks like a duck, quacks like a duck"? Well I'm going to assume your a duck & that's part of your offence at the rather common confusion.
