Dan, thank you so much for sharing that beautiful cemetery, and it is really sad that when you have so many low lifes that have to destroy people's grave sites.
Think this could be the most beautiful place you’ve visited yet. It’s great to see the stones & grave not vandalised or defaced. Some gems in there if you can call it that. Thank you lady for the key to the off limits part. Cheers Dan.
Nice walk! The big pillar-type stones make me so nervous to walk around since I’ve seen stories of them toppling over and killing people over the years. The saddest case is a son who was visiting his mother’s grave with his wife on Easter Sunday some years ago and her stone toppled over and killed him. Now he’s buried next to her 😮
Hi Dan. The graves at the beginning of the video seemed to be really crowded. I wonder if the people buried next to each other would have associated with each other when they were alive. The second half was really interesting. All those old caves and graves. ❤
Hey Dan, just a little FYI... A crucifix is a portrayal of Jesus on the cross, the crucifixion. A cross is just that, a cross. Hope that clears it up for you! Ps...loved the vid!!
I come from a Moravian background. I'm sure you know that the Moravian graveyards all have identical flat white stones to symbolize equality in death. It's a cool concept, but the graveyards of the fabulously wealthy like this one are far more fun to walk through.
There's a really huge angel at the Melbourne General Cemetery (Victoria Australia) generally known as 'the big angel'. It is a dead ringer for Elvis Presley! He predates Elvis by about eighty years.
What a magnificent cemetery. The headstones are exquisite; the craftsmanship phenomenal. In the USA, craftsmanship, such as that seen in this cemetery, a dying art form. If you could find someone to do the work, the cost would be astronomical. Thank you for showing us these amazing cemeteries.
My grandparents had their ashes interred inside one of the apertures in the rock then closed in by a granite stone . I was horrified when I visited a few years ago to see that people are smashing open the little vaults and thrown the ashes around and smashing up the urns . The cemetery manager and grounds men didn’t care less hence why you see those bricked up apertures
That is truely disgusting so sorry that you saw this and that the managers don’t care. Pity the papers don’t get on to it and something get done. May all RIP
Hey Dan. Hailing from St. Louis Missouri buddy. I love your videos dude. Particularly this one. Love how you go to these places. I have a bit of British in me so I love watching you. Keep making videos like this. I like the ones that you did with Kate Middleton's relatives and the one President George Washington's relatives. Plus I like how they make grave markers over there. Most of the ones here in states are different than the ones over there.
I cannot allow myself, now in my early 60s to walk & venture into a cemetery. From the age of 2 & throughout my life, Ive been followed home. This is a beautiful place & I appreciate your respect, kindness & compassion. U are giving me a glimpse into the distant past of those who once lived & breathed. Thank U ❤
Hi Dan, yet another brilliant, well executed, video. Also good to actually see YOU at the start of this one, I was beginning to think you must be too ugly for you not to show yourself more on your productions - haha - keep it up and let's see more of you going forward. :0)
Those caves and weird rocks looked like cooked out and melted buildings and then mud flooded….and they make these places into cemeteries and golf clubs and plant trees and stuff to hide them. Really interesting.
I am a new subscriber to your channel and I am so happy I found you! I am the only one in my family who enjoys walking around graveyards; I thought I was strange. Really enjoy your tours; thank you 😊
There are many interesting cemeteries in Nevada in the rural areas, nearby / in ghost towns. Many had major accidents for mining disasters, or fired which swept through towns. Many of the graves have wonderful sculptured angels, mostly modest in size compared to these Nottingham ones. And many use Odd Fellow & Masonic symbolism, too. If you ever get a chance to visit out there you won't be disappointed!
I must have missed where this was located Dan. Did you say Nottingham? Are those stone structures limestone or sandstone? This is an incredible place. So many special architectural headstones, many different styles of Celtic crosses, a very unique cemetery. Loved it too, because it was so green. Thanks so much Dan! ❤ 🙌 🇬🇧
Hi Dan. I’m so glad you visited the Rock. It’s an awesome place to visit and I’ve been on one of their guided tours at night. They dressed up in Victorian clothing and we were given torches which were useful in the catacombs. Like you say, never used but small anti rooms which were meant for the purpose. You covered quite a lot of it so well done Dan
Fascinating walk around.. I would need to take a weeks holiday in Nottingham just to visit this cemetery...oh so much to see and history to search. thank you so much.
In America you will see "rolls of tree trunks" set upon on a slab. Used as a memorial. Deeply etched to look like an elm or oak as to bark. The IWW members used that often as a cemetery memorial plaque. Also other benevolent societies.
Sad to think that all these people were once so loved that a small fortune was paid for their gravesites and yet they are all forgotten today. I suppose it’s the fate of all of us eventually. 😢
Thank you again for the splendid walk. It was so relaxing at the end of a long week of teaching Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to American fifteen year olds! I loved that you reflected on the fact that in the Bible the angels always appeared in masculine forms but the Victorians depicted them as females. One more thing, my name is Yvonne and I was thrilled that you pronounced it correctly. In America, most people say it “Yavonne” or “Yivonne” which I hate. So thank you very much!
That grave with the fancy iron columns (minus the iron chains) was something else! I wonder why they are gone? Were they donated during one of the wars for material collection? I understand goods were collected during WW1 AND possibly WW2 for the war effort.
It's interesting to see the monuments which were popular, so much so several families bought the basic one. Changing it to show their idea as to a top portion, having an urn, a cross or another top decoration (finial) if you will. Fascinating.
What a great video! Thanks for this. We have friends that live in Nottingham, so it might be a place they've visited too. There *are* a lot of angels there aren't there?
06:50 Underneath the daughter Nellie Gertrude Hobson is Frank N. Hobson the Sherrif of Nottingham no less! It is fittingly in keeping with your mention of Robin Hood and Little John . That they're buried elsewhere makes sense as they'd be unlikely to be buried next to Sheriffs. 🙃
Gosh the angels and plinths are so cool. I wonder how much something like that would cost today, and whether it was an equivalent cost then. Amazing. Loved the intro too 😊
Wow. Surprised they even have the skillset now. I was watching a documentary recently regarding old architecture saying some things couldn't be built today!
Fascinating cemetery with a lot of memorials in really good condition the rock catacombs were so interesting hope you get to go back and film the tour with Yvonne ! 😊❤
That cross monument leaning looks like the burial or coffin under it has collapsed in on itself and caused the ground to shift and make the monument lean quite a bit, you can see collapsed ground on many of the graves in this video
This is pure magic. I really thank you, because it's really beautiful. It takes me. I was like in a darkness world but a secure world at the same time. hails from drauglur from germany
Hi and I hope you answer my question ⁉️ Why did you show yourself as a cartoon in the beginning? What do you look like. Interesting voice. I'm new here and really appreciate your RU-vid channel. Thank you 😊🙏 Dee
some of those rows don't seem large enough to hold a full size person i know in general that the height of humans has increased over the years but still the monuments literally would have to be installed above the coffins
about your railings, the older railings, 1920's or before might be made of wrought iron. Pure wrought iron doesn't rust nearly as quickly as steel which is what the later railings are
I like walking around my local cemetery near me to read the headstones, some babies and children never had any names on just " baby " " child " We also have some polish soilders from the 2nd world war.
