Today I'm going to share with you one of the most common traditions we have in BJJ that will make you absolutely TERRIBLE at takedowns! (rolling with bigger partners on the feet)
No, kidding...
The reason I bring this up is because I got a question from a young, competitive, Blue Belt named Justin.
He says that he's won a ton of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments by pulling guard and he's loving BJJ. However, now he wants to start adding some takedowns to his game in order to be a bit more well-rounded.
The issue is this...
Most of the guys at his gym are much bigger, therefore he's stuck trying to wrestle the big guys which is obviously problematic (risk of injury/unrealistic looks compared to competition/etc...)
As a result, he's starting to develop a certain level of fear of takedowns.
In the end he asked me "how can I get over my fear of takedowns?"
In this video I'll tackle the process of developing confidence in your takedowns for Jiu-Jitsu.
I'll also talk about the importance of training in your own weight class, especially when doing takedowns, in order to stay as safe as possible and build some confidence with your techniques.
Lastly, I'll address the way takedown rounds are often done in Wrestling and Judo and why I think BJJ could focus more on this philosophy when rolling on the feet.
Hopefully you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching!
