Bryon Smith is a name some of you may not be familiar with. However, he was an extremely talented bowler who managed to defeat the best bowler in the world to win a Masters title. He had a silky smooth style and his calm demeanour was incredibly impressive too. When you watch this performance, you would assume that he would go on to win consistently on the PBA tour. What's shocking is that he never won again.
Today we look at his story.

The PBA tour is so competitive that guys can be around for ten years making a living, and never win once. Every pro bowler should be proud to win a tournament, the competition is that good

2:50 To answer that question, nope. Both lanes were likely playing the same. Not enough traffic to determine if two lanes are playing different or not. He was making bad shots and missing his target. Bad shots usually don't provide good information. It's why many coaches say that you should never make a move off of a bad shot. Do that and you'll start fishing immediately and all of a sudden you're in the weeds. If your ball was online and you start shaking 7s, leaving flat 10s, blowing 7s, or wrapping 10s (all four of which are errors of angle), THAT is when you make an adjustment. To me, anyways. Either way fantastic presentation as always.

Bryan runs a real nice center in Roseburg OR called Ten Down Lanes. They hosted the state tournament and I met him there. Real nice guy!

Do a video when Emmett Schutes smacked around Earl Anthony and got every lucky break possible. Earl was so pissed.

The video of that game, with Bo Burton doing the commenting, is on RU-vid. Burton is famous for calling Shutes' lucky strikes "a repertoire of strikes."

Another excellent video … For close/unique matches, how about Tom Baker winning the 04 World Championship at 49? And the four-person eliminator at the 2007 Lumber Liquidators Open … That was crazy

Even more impressive was the 1986 Quaker State Open where Jon O'Drobinak made his tv debut at 20 years old as the 4th seed and beat Jim Harvey, Wayne Webb, Marshall Holman, and finally Mark Roth to win his only career title. His only other tv appearance was the 1989 King Louie Open where he was the 5th seed and lost to Walter Ray Williams Jr. That Quaker title needs its own video.

How about norm duke vs Chris Barnes in 2000 for MSN Open from Tucson Arizona, another one I thought about is Walter Ray Williams Jr vs Brian Voss in 1986 in the Hammer Open from Edmond Oklahoma

How about other guys who were "one hit wonders" on the PBA tour (only one PBA tour victory ever): Scott Alexander - 1995 PBA National Championship; Gil Sliker (27 TV appearances and his only win was the 1983 Showboat Doubles Classic with Mike Durbin); Mike Edwards (1 win in 37 TV appearances). And you have several bowlers who have made the USBC Masters their only win: Neal Burton (1980); Brett Wolfe (2002); Brian Boghosian (1999) and John Nolen (2009).

seeing how pa let himself go is sad. he couldve been better if he didnt get so out of shape. bryon had the game but not the mentality. just like loschetter. he had such a great physical game. both of the wolfe's had such great games. i started bowling in the late 90s in a league for fun. earl and walter did not have the greatest looking games. but are the top. so many of the greatest had not perfect games. alby. parker. weber were very technical. but technical is not always greatest. hate belmo but his mental game is so far above so many of the bowlers now. that's why he wins. if simo ever figures out the mental game like belmo he will destroy everyone.

Man I could tell some stories about PA for days. Unreal what he was like with women. As you can imagine not flattering stories and not something he would get away with today. Not good!

Good post, agree about Simo. It’s interesting how Belmo and Simo both basically grew up in a bowling alley, although the circumstances were quite different. These guys knew for sure what they were doing in life before their first voice crack..and will retire two of the best ever.

Since he has the most titles, it makes sense that he also has the most 2nd place finishes. The man was a machine and constantly made the finals.

I think Earl Anthony was also only around 50% in title matches. But just getting there so often is what made him and Walter the best.

@@dfo132 it’s a pretty impressive stat I understand that. Chris Barnes was the ultimate bowling machine but had trouble on TV. Did you see some of Walters earlier 2nd place finishes ? He was a hot head I think he finally overcame that. I watched him almost dislocated his shoulder blade a few times where his arm ended up on the other side of his body above hie head. He was intense.

Dick Weber and Earl Anthony was the best bowler. never like Mark Roth and Marshall Holman my best friend was married to Jimmy Mack his son's are professional still bowling
