About Bondrewd: his character is easy to misread because most of the information about him and his motives is given here and there (and some of it was cut from the movie and anime for time), so it's easy to miss. In summary, due to the Zoaholic he lost his ability to feel bad about his actions, everything he says should be taken at face value (he's not trying to be manipulative or trick them at all; in fact, _the process WON'T WORK_ if he's faking it-it HAS to be genuine), and he was trying to recreate what happened to Nanachi on himself so that he could safely explore the sixth layer and bring his findings back to the surface. More specifically: -Bondrewed is the sole reason people know anything about how the Abyss works; what the effects of the curse are, how it's triggered, the fact that it gets weaker further from the center of the shaft, how to make white whistles, etc. He was made a White Whistle because of his accomplishments in helping humanity more safely explore and understand this place. -The creation of a white whistle requires a WILLING human sacrifice. If the person _doesn't want_ to become a white whistle to help the intended user, the process _WILL NOT WORK._ -Because of that, Bondrewed used the Zoaholic to copy himself, then sacrificed his original body to become his own white whistle. -One of the affects of the Zoaholic is that it destroys your humanity and literally MAKES you go insane. However, Bondrewed was SO dedicated to studying the abyss that when he lost his humanity, rather than becoming a mass murderer or serial rapist or something, he just became a scientist that didn't have the ability to understand what "too far" means. (Granted, that's actually scarier, for someone who's genuinely nice to LITERALLY NOT UNDERSTAND why it's a bad thing to hurt someone (no, not even if it's helping further science, Bondrewed...)) -To help make exploring the abyss even safer, Bondrewed wanted to find a way around the curse of the sixth layer (which will either kill you or turn you into a hollow like Mitty). -Since the curse only affects humans, he needed (what he viewed as) willing sacrifices who would let him study it, ultimately leading to the experiment that Mitty and Nanachi went through. -(The way the kids were transported from the surface wasn't a shortcut or a hidden path, it was literally just an armored box that the Umbral Hands would carry while they descended on the normal path (protecting the box from the monsters themselves).) -In the experiment with Mitty and Nanachi, he had already discovered that "forcing the curse to one container" wouldn't work with animals or two people who didn't care about each other. His next attempt was to try using two good friends (which is why Nanachi was "just in time"), in the hopes that the desire "I must survive to protect my friend" would override the desire "oh god, this hurts, please kill me" while being hit with the curse. -The results of that experiment gave him two ideas: one was the cartridges (which would use the same technology as the elevator to pump the curse away from him and into the person in the cartridge), and the other was to get the same "blessing" that Nanachi had (a body that, while not IMMUNE, was still RESISTANT to the curse). -He tried replicating the experiment on himself (using two of "him", like when he made his white whistle), but unfortunately, while he still had a body that could be hit with the curse, due to the Zoaholic, the abyss no longer saw him as human enough for the same process to work. He couldn't become his own cartridge, nor would the abyss give him its blessing. -Since he couldn't make cartridges (out of) himself, he went back to plan B. He started getting the volunteer kids to like him (using Nanachi as bait to lure them in) and became genuine friends with them. In his mind, he did genuinely care for them and appreciated (what he saw as) their willing sacrifices. Once the feeling was strong enough, he would turn them into cartridges. -While this worked for avoiding the curse, he still couldn't get the blessing. Friendship wasn't strong enough. It needed to be LOVE. -Prushka was the daughter of an Umbral Hand who was being transported in the box (like other children), but there was some sort of accident and the box was damaged, nearly killing her. -Bondrewed decided to become her father to develop a bond of familial love with her (after all, a child wouldn't develop romantic love for him (that would be _weird!_ =O), and an adult wouldn't work at all-they would be too big to fit in a cartridge! So he needed the strongest kind of love that exists between an adult and a child: parental love). -Bondrewed GENUINELY loved Prushka like a daughter. Like with the white whistles, it _wouldn't work_ if he was faking it; it _had to be mutual,_ not one-sided. It's just that, since Bondrewed lost his humanity, he doesn't (and in fact is LITERALLY unable to) feel bad about sacrificing the things he loves for the greater good. (And he doesn't understand why that's bad if the "thing" in question is a person.) -The other requirement to get the blessing was that she had to want to PROTECT him (like Mitty was protecting Nanachi), but he was having trouble getting her to feel that. She loved him, sure, but all that was focused on devotion and the desire for adventuring with him, which-while appreciated-wasn't the emotion he needed her love to focus on. That's why he let one of "him" get killed in front of her, then revealed himself right afterwards; to maximize the feelings of "I don't want papa to die; I must protect him". -Now that Prushka's emotional requirements had been met, he turned her into a cartridge. Then, when she was "used", the emotions between them were the same as the emotions between Nanachi and Mitty in the elevator, and thus the same transformation took place in Bonedrewed. (The SFX in the manga for this moment was "the rumble of scientific triumph".) -Because Prushka was also wanting to sacrifice herself for Riko, she became her white whistle as well. -In the end, Bondrewed was genuinely impressed that they found a way to beat him and was happy that they would get to go learn more about the abyss. In his mind, while it was disappointing that he lost the body he had just gotten, he had still finally reproduced the experimental results he was wanting to, and they had proven that their will was stronger than his, so he had no problem yielding to them. -One small detail that I really like that I've never seen a reactor catch: when Reg tears away part of his mask, the eye reveals that it's a monster under there. But in the final shot, the eye is human. It's like losing to Nanachi and the others helped restore some small portion of his humanity. Just a cool metaphor. =D TL;DR Bondrewed is a fascinating and complex character. He's not an evil asshole, just a friendly scientist who's tragically and _TERRIFYINGLY incapable_ of empathy.

"I wanna be a white whistle" - Prushka

After watching many reaction videos for made in abyss, reactors were wondering why animators included the scene where Meinya pooped when meeting Pryushka. Animals only poop when they feel comfortable, because in that state they are most vulnerable, so just like how hamsters poop on owner's hand it's a sign that Meinya opened up to Pryushka right away, showing how innocent and kind she really is.

- Reg did actually use his 'Zoom' feature way back in Episode 4 albeit with less impressive animation. - Reg was most likely referring to other members of the Umbra Hands team who hadn't yet returned from emplacing the incendiary compounds through the field of Eternal Fortunes and might, hypothetically, be alive and well.. - The kids were still on the 4th Layer when that Umber Hand mentioned Bondrewd not being on that Layer right now. - It didn't really come up in the first season, but in the manga Riko considers herself quite the gourmand to likes to taste random things (possibly including the walls at the orphanage). - I had thought it a bit late for Riko to still have deciduous teeth too, but apparently 11~13 is about the right age to shed the molars... - Riko didn't go into a lot of detail, but in "Pointers from Nanachi" (exposition about creatures, places, and relics) it is noted that copying one's consciousness into multiple bodies using Zoaholic leads to an erosion of your sense of self. Bondrewd is pretty far gone at this point, unfortunately... - The movie is a pretty complete adaptation of a pretty short arc (about 1-4/5 volumes). There are a few lines and scenes I wish had been retained, but ultimately most of what is missing is exposition and its omission was probably for the best.

Bondrew is my favorite villain of all time... What i love about him the most is that he aint no hypocrite, when reg said "get a taste of what your experiments feel like" Bondrew already knew how they felt, because he is the first test subjet of his experiments, hell he sacrificed himself in order to get his white whistle. He loved and remembered every single one of the kids he killed. He truly loved and cared for Prushka... its just that science come before everything... without his experiments, cave riding would be 1000 more dangerous, he has truly helped humanity So I wouldnt say he is evil, but he definitely aint a good person

28:19 Ozen mentions it in her fight with Reg, Aubade are an unofficial classification of relics known as the Supreme Treasures, which have the potential to threaten the value of the Abyss and are as a result kept a secret or destroyed, Reg is a relic which belongs to this category (which was the excuse Ozen used for attacking him). 29:00 To me, Reg is the brawn, Nanachi is the brains, but Riko is the knowledge. Riko lacks the physical capabilities of Reg, and isn't as smart as Nanachi, but she has an extremely good memory and has basically an encyclopedic knowledge of all information on the Abyss available to red whistles plus all the information in Lyza's notes from her last dive (assuming anything was erased by the Delver's Guild). So Nanachi is the practical brains while Riko is the academic brains, she's also like you said a much more decisive person than Reg and Nanachi and has a personality that allows her to rally people around her. 39:57 The worst part is, he ISN'T a piece of shit, Bondrewd isn't being manipulative or anything even remotely like that, Bondrewd is 100% genuine, everything he does and everything he says can be taken at face value, he genuinely cares for the children he experiments on and loved Prushka as his daughter, it's the only way any of it would've worked. It's just that the Zoaholic fucked his mind up so much that he has no sense of right or wrong allowing him to do all of this horrific stuff to the people he deeply loves. Bondrewd may tell falsehoods but he has never once lied, because even if what he says is false he 100% believes it is true, he truly believes that his "children" are willing sacrifices, as on the surface they are, they just don't realize what that means because while everything he says is the truth, he never reveals the actual process behind it. Bondrewd in his eyes is telling the truth when he tells them they'll go on an adventure, because he genuinely believes that turning them into a Cartridge and taking them with him through the Abyss is a fun adventure they'd want to go on (because they do want to go on a fun adventure). And that is the horrifically wonderful thing about Bondrewd's character, everything Bondrewd does is out of genuine love and the belief that the people he is subjecting to his experiments are willing. 47:48 He doesn't fake it, if he faked ANY of it then nothing would've worked, the Blessing requires reciprocal love, had Bondrewd been just faking it then he would've suffered from the Curse like he did in the first fight, yet with Prushka's Cartridge he got the Blessing, because Prushka loved and wanted to protect Bondrewd and Bondrewd in turn truly loved Prushka.

Here you can find interesting information about the Film's Things (it was a Commentary Interview with the Author made after Film's 1° Screening) - Umbra Hands with white coats are the bodies made for battle, and they're armed with really powerful relics. - Bondrewd's multiple eyes with the tentacles growing out is a relic. - The Umbra Hands acting like robots is just them on "Auto Bondrewd" mode. - Rico has in fact eaten wall before. - The body with four arms is in charge of the Zoaholic. - Meinya found the Zoaholic because the relic draws animals to itself. - Bondrewd and Nanachi survived the incinerator because Reg set it to not affect living things. - The Shaker needles fuse with the target's skin and don't actually wound the target. - Bondrewd didn't save the umbra hands from the scorpion things because having them die to complete Purshka was his plan all along. - Bondrewd sees through Nanachi's eyes using another relic not Zoaholic - Purshka did know that Bondrewd was doing experiments but didn't know exactly what they were - Reg, who is not human, has the most "humanity" - Reg's penis getting hard is not a sexual thing, but a biological thing. He has not reached Spermarche. - Bondrewd's whistle isn't blown into, he clasps his hands around it to keep it in shadow and then strokes it to make it vibrate and make its sound (it is not a pair of hands but two of the same hand). - Bondrewd's line congratulating Nanachi on "setting (something" free" upon seeing Mitty's light bulb go out is referring to Nanachi setting herself free, not Mitty. - Reg is naked when captured but has his pants on immediately when rescued because Nanachi put them on before picking him up. - If you take a close look at the thing Nanachi puts on the Purshka whistle, the top is supposed to look like a green hat. - Purshka Masturbates (Tsukushi yelled this apparently) - The toilets have no doors but Purshka and the hands don't care - Papa Pole is short for "pole used to become a papa", Purshka was taught this in biology/dissection lessons - There are plenty of people who want to become Umbra Hands - The Guy in the flower field was especially powerful. Like the body with the tail, all of the hands with the white coats are tough. - Reg got bugs up his pants (is that where they got some to use in the first fight against Bondrewd?) - Nanachi is warm. - Bondrewd Really Loves children - Riko goes to sleep with her glasses on and Nanachi is the one who takes them off - Purshka did know that there were other children around but didn't know what became of them - Umbra Hands in "Auto Bondrewd" result in them having "all the information coming in" but also makes them slow. Also called "Cloud Bondrewd". - The Tail is an "extension" of a relic called "The Third Arm/Third Works" that becomes part of a body when attached - Reg has infantile traits, and him constantly reacting to Nanachi being fluffy is like a child getting excited without knowing what they're excited about - Gueira's personality was intact all along (though he was in auto mode when he died) - They did not destroy the Zoaholic, respecting Purshka's last wishes that they stop fighting. - The incinerator can be fired multiple times during the ten minutes before Reg blacks out - Nanachi's punches are soft and do not hurt Also referring to Reg crying after dropping that rock on Bondrewd, it's the first time he's ever killed another person. The same can be said later on when Riko shoots him with the Incinerator, which might be the initial reason she instantly broke down after. Also the black tar substance he fired like a net, Far Caress, is actually a creature shoved into that box and he's forcing it to use its defense mechanism, like a squid inking.

Heres a little interesting theory as to why Bondrewd cannot be killed in this story that I came upon somewhere in the internet: Because Bondrewd is the physical embodiment of the idea of "Akogare" or the "Longing/Ambition" which, in this story's philosophy, is considered to be the strongest and immortal emotion in humans. So strong that it leads us into wanting to dive into the deepest dangers of Earth just because we "long" for something. Nanachi introduces this idea to us during her explanation of the Abyss' force field and from that point we see stories embodying the idea of Akogare. (well tbf we also see akogare in lyza and ozen, and Riko is also heavily into akogare although she is not as deranged as Bondrewd) Bondrewd is the physical embodiment of Akogare. He literally will do anything just to learn all about the Abyss, even as far as sacrificing himself if he can. Even as far as reciprocating real parental love towards his subjects in order to use them for this cause (yes it is true love, not only did the author confirm it but also it makes sense if you consider the fact that the Abyss can detect real emotions from fake. The Abyss can literally tell that Bondrewd isnt human anymore and thats why it doesnt accept Bondrewd's self sacrifice, ofc it can read emotions. at this point the abyss can be considered sentient) . He is pure "Akogare" without the distortions of basic human emotions like evil intent or heroic intent. He simply longs for the secrets of the Abyss, no matter the cost. And because of that, the story itself cannot kill him because Bondrewd perfectly reenacts its philosophy. Bondrewd being pure and straight "Akogare" is why he is the most powerful character in MiA currently. Like cmon, his whole character is basically a concept/idea at this point. The real Bondrewd died years ago and all thats left is the concept of Bondrewd. You know what they say about people and ideas right? A person may die, but his ideas will not.

Indeed this movie was my anime of the year. Granted I didn’t watch as much anime then as I do now in the past few years but statement stands. Animation was amazing and I couldn’t help but cry when I saw that moment with the whistle. Makes me wonder what or who the other whistle is. And Bondrewd is a villain who can’t empathize and feels ONLY love done right. Interestingly the music composer for all of shield hero is the same one for all of the made in abyss series. And season 2 is going to be even sadder and I can believe the hype for sure on that

Bunch of comments so I put them into one comment: You seemed to have missed it but in episode 1 Riko said Regs skin is made of some kind of rubber. He does not have human parts. He's not a human, he's a relic. Bondrewds theme is called "The Rumble of Scientific Triumph" which is just the best name for any theme ever In all honesty, Bondrewd isn't a piece of shit. If he had the option he would have done every one of his experiments by himself. He really did feel love for all of those children, obvious by the fact that he still remembers all their names, personalities and dreams. He just simply can't put anything above science. Maybe human Bondrewd was able too but his copies were all created with the singular purpose of advancing science. My most emotional part of the manga to date was when Riko said "Prushka is spilling out". It just completely broke me. I was binge reading so I was in kind of a trance so I wasn't really thinking ahead and didn't realize until Riko spelled it out. Akihito Tsukushi is just built different. I honestly believe that no matter how talented, no normal person could hope to write this. You have to have an incredibly unique mind and thought processes to come up with this stuff.

This anime is beyond fantastic! I love so much. The characters, world building, mysteries, Animation, and Soundtracks are all high quality... Made in Abyss is already a rare gem among animes themselves, now even within its main genre which is Adventure, it is still very unique.

Technically, Bondrewd was partially responsible (along with Prushka herself) for Riko getting her White Whistle, and while he did cut of Reg's arm, it was because of him that Reg learned how to properly fight. So a way, he really helped the party a lot. Also, as horrible as what he did to Prushka was, it was consensual. You could say she was indirectly brain washed into it, but I'd say what he did to Nanachi was much worse than what he did to her.

At the beginning when Reg said about adventurers to Umbra hand,there was in fact adventurers who were assisting that Umbra hand who were deep in the nest and other area. So they are either burned alive or eaten.

As a manga reader, I was extremely nervous watching this movie. And I'm even more scare of what gonna happen in ss2

The WORST part about this guy was that he wasn't doing it to be cruel or sadistic. He wasn't getting his jollies doing this. He was just processing meat. There was no humanity in him at all.

Bondrewd is such a great character he genuinely loved the children he experimented on he still remembers their names and dreams he's never fought them with malice he was even praising them everytime they fought hid quest to understand the abyss made him one with it

The thing that captured me about this show is nothing is surface layer. There is a solid story that progresses through this but the narrative is layer upon layer of subtext and metaphor. It's so incredibly simple yet viciously complex. I can't look away.

Bondold, even if his body dies, he can shift his consciousness to a masked person unless he destroys Zoaholic. The real Bondold died after turning into a white whistle. The Bondold that exists now is just a bodyless consciousness.

Aw... Prushka wants to go on adventures with Riko and the gang! Yeah, Prushka helped Bondrewd with the cartridges but Nanachi also did. In the last episode we saw her and Bondrewd complimented her on her cartridge. It's probably where she got a lot of her medical knowledge. Not sure how long she left Ico Front with Mitty, but it must have been at least 15 years, but I'm thinking longer since we saw all the gravestones by Nanachi's house that were all covered. And she didn't know Prushka at all. Yup. This is one of my favorite series. It's just about perfect in every way to me.

This series is really top tier, actually my second most favorite anime of all time. Pretty close to be my first tho, but I gotta give it to Code Geass. But Made in Abyss has it all, a good story, music, characters, especially world building. Man, im excited and nervous for season 2, its in a couple of days from now... Yup, im not ready lol. Brondrewd character transcends the concept of good and evil, if before he was probably already quite abnormal for trying to use himself to create his own White Whistle with the help of the relic that also made him lose his humanity, then he would be the definitive and literal incarnation from that stereotype of a scientist who only cares about finding out the results that those experiments will lead to.
