The Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 was the first lens I purchased to supplement the kit lens that came along my first Olympus DSLR E-520, and I found that budget telephoto zoom lens to be quite interesting. It has brighter than usual aperture of F3.5-4.5, vs the typical F4-5.6, and the lens' optical performance is also nothing to scoff about. I used this lens on my OM System OM-1 camera and got some nice shots at KL Bird Park!

Was nice to remember this lens. In DSLR era, this lens was interesting : fast and affordable. Now we have 40-150mm F/4.0 PRO which is lighter and better, but of course more expensive. From DSLR time I am really missing 50-200mm F/2.8-3.5. I had both versions. I hope OMS will produce a mirrorless version of this lens.

I love this video. A year ago I was to buy a 4/3 70-300 lens, the older bigger one for a lady friend, but accidently I brought the 40-150 f3.5-4.5. I have her my 70-300, and still have the 40-150 and no 70-300. Now you made me appreciate this bigger (than the m.zuiko 4.8-5.6) lens. I will start using it now. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Robin. Beautiful photographs! Thank you for the video on using the four thirds lens with the newer PDAF cameras - they are breathing new life into these nice older lenses. Although larger, four thirds lenses seem to be better built than the typical m 4/3 kit lens and can be found for a fraction of the price on the used market. Showing what these older lenses are capable of rather than only demonstrating the "latest and greatest thing", helps those of us on a budget find inexpensive tools to make nice photographs.

Thanks for the review, Robin. I had this lens when I owned the Olympus E600. I still have the old 4/3 75 - 300 mm lens that I use with an adaptor on the EM1 Mk iii. It’s still good but I rely mainly on manual focus because the autofocus seems slow, but I think it’s still an ok lens.

This came as the tele kit lens with my E-300 in 2006. I still have both, although I got rid of the 14-45 that was the other kit lens long ago. They weren't a well balanced pair, quality-wise. Rarely use this now, but thanks for jogging my memory... time to revisit it. Cheers.

I just picked one up for $24 on ebay, if it performs like the 70-300 four thirds lens it will be a keeper. I cant stand the plastic construction on the newer lenses. I generally use these lenses for motorsports and need well built lenses. These are built like tanks. Great video Robin.

I have this lens and use it on a regular basis (on fourthirds DSLR's). I fully agree with the pros and cons that you mention. I think it is just very nice to hold and operate. You can compare this lens to any other kit lens of that era and it is just better, especially the construction and damping. After this video it may change of course, but at the moment this lens is dirt cheap. On average around $50 but I have seen them as low as $10. Nice to revive this lens and awesome photos!

Great video, and more proof that old gear can be great for as long as it is well maintained. However, I'd argue that OM System has more than enough M.Zuiko lens selection in this range, with the "plastic fantastic" 40-150mm f4-5.6 as a super cheap, light and high quality option, the 40-150mm f4 Pro as a midrange, brigther and weather sealed option, and the classic 40-150mm f2.8 Pro as the professional option with near perfect image quality and the option of taking teleconverters... In my opinion, the only thing m43 is missing is a good set of f1.4-f2 weather sealed SMALL primes 😊

Thanks for your review. Two questions: 1. I see that you can get the Olympus Zuiko Digital AF 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 ED Lens for US$ 300 on e-bay. Do you have any experience with that lens? 2. The OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/4 PRO Lens costs about US$ 800 new. The newer lens will of course have faster autofocus than the Olympus Zuiko 40-150mm F3.5-4.5, but have you compared the image quality difference between the two lenses?

One problem I have found with some after market adapters is that the hole the locking pin fits into is not deep enough and doesn't allow the pin on the camera body to fully extend and turn on the sensor (black screen). Drilling the hole in the adapter a bit deeper can sometimes allow it to work.

Hi Robin, Given that the camera market has contracted significantly since 2012 there is no business case for any manufacturer to make and market lower end lenses as there is very little margin in those types of products. My guess is that OM System will keep those lenses around for as long as they sell in sufficient quantity that allows OM System to produce small, cost effective batch runs. For all we know OM System could already be sitting on old inventory that the company has been unable to unload. Tom

While it's always nice to see older equipment getting use, I think it is hard to make a compelling case to acquire this lens in 2023 for the M43 system. At 15 ounces (without adaptor), it is much heavier than the Oly 40-150 f4-5.6 kit lens (6.7 ounces) just to improve by 1/2 stop of light. Lens testing by Imaging Resource of both lenses does not produce a compelling argument for the old 4/3 lens, and while it is under $50 used at KEH, a new third party adaptor is around $80, and a used Oly MMF 2 or 3 adaptor can cost almost twice that.

I did not ask anyone to buy this lens. I have it, and I am showing what it can do. That was what this video was. I agree that you did not advocate purchasing this lens in your video, and was thinking about updating my posting to reflect this, but could not see how to edit the comment. Since there are already three OM 40-150mm lenses currently in production, it is highly unlikely that OM would be introducing another such lens.
