THIS CAMERA JUST BLEW MY MIND | Canon L3
I've been wanting an old Canon interchangeable lens range finder camera for a long time. The Canon P and the Canon 7 were top of my list but the prices always went over my budget. Then this popped up on a local auction site a Canon L3 35mm range finder from the 1950s. I needed a lens for it, ended up buying 2 both 50mm one a Canon 50mm 1.8 the other a Leitz Elmar 5cm 3.5, wow really just WOW. The first roll through has got me champing at the bit the shoot more. Hope you get a chance to watch.
Regards Paul

Danger, gear alert.....watching this may cost you money!!!! What a beauty Paul, and a bargain too? Never owned a Canon rangefinder but you have me tempted because it looks gorgeous 😍 It was actually manufactured the same year as me, but looks in way better condition unfortunately😏 Produced some great images of the kiddies too, so definitely a keeper!

@@paultaylorphotography9499 Love to Paul but I wear specs and TBH the small viewfinder on most of these older cameras does my head in? Probably why my favorite 35mm is the Nikon F3 HP, and when using older cameras I prefer TLR's with the WLF? Lovely camera though, and a real bargain given price you paid for it. 😉 Edit: Just checked and there's one for sale locally here in Ireland, asking price €480. That works out around 870 NZD so you got a real bargain!!

Hey thanks mate I was so close to a ViT a while back love that trigger I put an auto bid on with a plan to nudge up if it was beaten then I went out of cell range for two days came back to find I’d lost out by one dollar totally gutted. The Rpx film is bloody good and around 8 NZD cheaper per roll than FP4 so happy to keep shooting it thanks for checking out my vid appreciate it

sup Paul! Wonderful camera you get here. I recognized it immediately, as I also bought an L3 a month ago. Apart from the viewfinder, which is a bit dirty, it's also in such great condition. i'm just as overwhelmed by the look, quality and satisfaction as you are! I came with a 50mm F2, but it's completely dirty and now I'm looking for alternatives for the M39 mount. So if you have anything besides the two lenses I tested, please let me know. I have to hand it to you for taking such great photos! greetings from Switzerland

hey Tim cheers mate. stunning little camera built to survive, congrats on picking one up. Shame about the lens but you can pick LTM lenses up pretty cheaply especially FSU (Former Soviet Union) lenses like Industar, I had an Industar 50 a while back loved it. As much as I'm enjoying the Elmar, my preference for rangefinders is wider so I'll be looking to pick up a 35 at some stage either that or buy more film and take a few steps back haha. Just subbed your chan mate I'll take a look through tonight cheers.

Hi Paul, great video and great pics. They look perfect. I can feel you love this kind of mechanical craftmenship. I wonder why it took such a long time until people began to rediscover the greant Canon RF cameras of the 50s and 60s. The Canon series S, II, III and IV cameras were copies of the Leica II and III models (with improvements in the viewfinder) and the Canon series V, L, VI, P (there are many variations, L stands for Lever wind, T for trigger wind) and perhaps the Model 7 too were improved models with their own design concept, starting nearly the same time as when Leica startet the M series. Keep shooting film, perhaps the prices per roll will go back to a norma l level. ;-))

Hey cheers mate, yeah I almost won a bid for a Nikon S2 a while back lovely looking camera. Always keeping an eye out for a Leica III, I had a Zorki 4 loved it but it had issues, I sent it back to seller who was happy to do a repair sadly I've not heard from him since Christmas, hope he's ok. Thanks for taking a look and offering info, really appreciate it.

@@paultaylorphotography9499 TBH, despite having a few Leica M cameras, I recently paid £40.00 for a Soviet era FED-2 which is another copy of the Leica . I really enjoy using that camera and the lens is decent too, in fact very very good past F5.6. The shutter is loud but, very satidfying. The otehr Soviet rangefinder camera the I have is the Kiev 4M, which is a copy of the Contax II. This one is an experience to use and makes very good images. I share your enthusiasm for the Elmar. I have three of them, one for my M3 and also one which is the F2.8 version. Past F5.6 these lenses are just as good as the more exotic summicron but with lower contrast, which is not a bad thing and perfect for digital too. Take care.

The L3 is the lever actuated film advance version of the "VT" series, these being the last Canons which used the older style shutter with the slow speeds on a separate, front-mounted selector dial. Here in the US, we see the VT commonly, but the L bodies are fairly rare. You do not want to collapse that Leitz lens when on this body. You can do so on IV and earlier Canon models. The issue is not fouling the shutter curtain. With the VT, Canon improved on its copy of Leica bodies by adding baffling inside the body to further reduce lens flare effecting the exposure. When this type of lens is mounted on those bodies and the lens is collapsed, the rear lens barrel hits and can damage both the baffle and the lens. In the early 1950s, Canon made at least one collapsible 50mm 1.9, which optically is inferior compared to the later 50mm 1.8 he has here. Trade that 50mm Elmar for a nice Canon 35mm 2.8.
