Fun times! I know what you mean by the joy you get from rehousing! During some recent rehousing I had one of my Aussie slings (Selenotholus sp) sit on my hand quietly for a while.. such a treat.. while another (Phlogius sp, known to be fast and bolty) decided to run around a bit, including up my arm.. thankfully my sleeves were tight around the wrist so it was ON the sleeve not under the sleeve lol!

When I was moving more Asian slings, I would have a couple of funnel tool I fashioned from craft paper into the shape of cones with holes cut at the tip. It worked for fossorial and arboreal Ts and was treated much like the entrance to a burrow, and they would predictably bolt to the narrowest point. I used it both for directing them into catch cups, as well as into burrows when rehousing. It was, at the time, a common technique for directing spiders into shipping tubes and jars.

Honestly, I would never try that with that tarantula in the really tall enclosure. You would probably just wind up accidentally drowning them if you did. Also, that enclosure wasn't water tested and if you combine the total weight of the substrate and water it could wind up blowing out the sides of the enclosure.

@@ethanmccormack9561 I'm talking about the huge fossoreal enclosure he built. You would need to put in a lot of water in there to flood out that tarantula. That's the reason I left the comment that I did because I think he may have been practicing flooding out a tarantula with that one in mind.

I know he said inb4 criticism, but it does seem cruel to keep tarantulas in such small enclosures so long. At what point do you consider that you have too many to give them all proper care?
@Kevin-fv3nv
@Kevin-fv3nv Год назад
Most wild tarantulas live in cramped tiny burrows and rarely go out to avoid predator. so a small enclosure is fine for them especially for sling.
@madhokte
@madhokte Год назад
@Kevin yeah that's tarantula 101 but there is still a large benefit to allowing the tarantula to stretch out if they want
@Kevin-fv3nv
@Kevin-fv3nv Год назад
@@madhokte what i learned during keeping tarantula is that large enclosure only going to stress them out, also eventhough you give them big enclosure, tarantula only going to use 1 or 2 spot of the enclosure. Check Bella and Linda enclosure, petko gave them big enclosure and where do they pick their spot at, yes their hide, they are just going to sit there entire live. So thats why big or huge enclosure is kinda pointless for tarantula. (Sorry if my english is bad)

@bellowick
@bellowick Год назад
When you get bitten, your natural instinct is to get whatever bit you off of you as quickly as possible. Usually by splatting or flicking/shaking the offending biter off of you. So, I feel that it's bad practice to let tarantulas climb all over you whilst rehousing. I'm not risking throwing my T across the room or squishing it's guts all over the back of my hand thank you very much. I would feel as if I had mistreated my pet if it died in such a way. It's not a confidence thing, it's just that some T's are more feisty than others, so in a high pressure situation, you will most likely forget that the T is unlikely to harm you.
@ericbeeman8717
@ericbeeman8717 Год назад
@@bellowick one thing I've learned from keeping any exotic is there's always a chance of a bite but after having reptiles and getting bit ya can pull away jerk an arm of try n fling em off just gotta let it happen same for spiders just let it happen cause there bit after they let go n run away they don't intend to bite us and if they do its either a fear bite or hunger bite long as u don't insight either respons then chances are they won't bite they don't want to use there venom on us any how they can't eat us its to precious for them and another thing also when rehouseing one and one jerks there arm away sometimes the t is done on ir hand and what happens then it gets flung across the room cause the individual is trying to not let em on there hand are reflexes aren't fast enough to get away from them were to slow so its easier to let em run up ur arm then jerk ur hand away
