Well that's nice to hear. There are some people who overcome claustrophobia through exposure. Not everyone but some people. We do have one video where we follow the mapping crew. And I do a bit of sketching like this instead of my videos. But it's very complicated to mix mapping and video because both are hard. All cartography in three dimensions is hard, but it's one of those things that is much more easy when you're actually physically *in* it. I've done hardcore orienteering cartography over open land, and it seems hardcore impossible from an outside perspective, but once you're inside that system doing it first hand, it becomes intuitive. Like, it totally makes sense once you're inside it. I once went to a kids park where they had a pitch black maze, which 3as completely intimidatingly hardcore, but on a second pass it became mundane and simple to mentally map. I'm guessing that caving is similarly impenetrable until you're actually in there doing it. It becomes intuitive from an inside perspective. The maps they draw seem insanely hard to create, but as someone who had created different types of maps, I understand that making them becomes much more simple once you're actually inside the thing you're making a map of

I’ve been watching your channel for a couple years now, and you guys have activated the primal urge within me to get off the couch and check out some local caves for myself. Although the caves I’m interested in are far more spacious than the ones you guys frequent. Eastern Washington is lousy with ‘em!
@CalvinHikes
@CalvinHikes Год назад
You had me at get off the couch. There are caves everywhere. Including Eastern washington. We live in one of the most cave depleted areas of the United States. Almost all of our caving is done between 2 and 7 hour drive radius. So it's not like we just go outside and find caves. The mountains of Idaho have lots of limestone. Lake Lenore by Grand Coulee has a cool dinosaur shaped cave. 12 million years ago a (rhinoceros) dinosaur fell in the lava and burned out and now the cave is shaped like the dead dinosaur. The entrance is his butt. The best part about the caves in the desert is that they are a nice temperature. Much warmer than the winter air and much cooler than the summer air. The caves on the west side are very cold and wet.

I recently started watching videos like this and I really like your channel specifically. By listening to your words and by trying to imagine myself being there I think I have found some meaning in this activity. You need to have patience, you need to be slow and be present in the moment, you must plan carefully your every movement and take your time to make it. In conditions like these it seems that you have to learn to control both your mind and your body, you have to be completely aware of every part of your body and every movement you make, you also need to have complete control of your mind and be patient because if you try to rush through you may start panicking. That's why you need to control your mind and your body and this I think is really beautiful. I think that just by watching the videos and thinking about the philosophy of this activity I get some of the benefits of doing it, without actually doing it. That's why I think it is so great and important that you share the videos with us, you share the experience and it has a positive impact to us. I don't think I will ever do this so I just can thank you for sharing your moments with us. I will just stick doing my activities for now, hiking and finding reptiles.

In general you'd have to join an organized caving group. Isn't really any other way to find caves. They are very private and they are kept private and The Gatekeepers are the groups. I don't know where you're at but in the US we called them Grotto's and they can be found on the internet that way. They are notoriously grumpy. If you just wanted to try to find them on your own again you'd still have to use the internet. There are also some public caves listed on Google maps. Not Tourist games but ones that you can find and walk through on your own.

Have you ever encountered a large dangerous animal when entering a cave?? And have you ever been stuck to the point where your really really scared and even tho you're trying to be calm it doesn't work and you have to be rescued
@CalvinHikes
@CalvinHikes 7 месяцев назад
The danger of caves is in not knowing what the actual dangers are. Like the temperature, for example is a problem for us. But animals and getting stuck or flooding are not.

@CalvinHikes
@CalvinHikes Год назад
Exposure therapy is the current best medical solution to curing claustrophobia. And I'd say, learning patience is also helpful. Any of those kinds of anxieties often come from the fact that we are just in a hurry to leave situations we do not like. Don't be in a hurry.

@CalvinHikes

Our first viral video was on the Nutty putty cave incident. It's titled, why everyone is wrong about dying in a cave. In all honesty I just think that was The Perfect Storm of bad decisions. It's such a rare event that it remains the only of its kind. So I don't know if it could have been prevented or not it's kind of an anomaly.

Yeah for a long time he was very helpful to the local caving group. If there was an unknown area we would just shove him through it to find out what's on the other side. He felt like a hero. In this cave eventually I did get through. So I could map the other rooms.

I have never went caving before but watching your videos makes me want to try it at least once. What would you suggest how I should start?
@CalvinHikes
@CalvinHikes Год назад
The path to caving is not a casual one. It's difficult to just go try. You can Google public caves and then find one that's nearest your location. For anything beyond that you need to join an organized caving Group which are all so found online. They are not necessarily easy to join and they don't want to be. They want committed members. I said good luck to you sir

Just ran into your chan and im facinated, currently binge watching everything, despite being claustrophobic as hell I really enjoy them. Just out of curiousity though, ive been wondering how yall deal with and monitor oxygen levels inside of a cave... is that ever an issue? Also whats your experience in caving with larger people (im relatively tall for a cave although skinny) Just curious- either way, have fun and stay safe!
@CalvinHikes
@CalvinHikes Год назад
The air in most caves is fine. But it's important to know in which ones it is not. You fit through what you fit through. There's a couple of big cavers here that are pretty athletic and they do just fine. There are people thinner than I am that can fit through smaller spaces than I can and it doesn't discourage me. I just fit through what I fit through. There are also plenty of bigger caves if a person wants to cave but doesn't feel like crawling on their belly for an hour. We don't necessarily love these crawls we are looking for larger caves and sometimes they are accessed through terrible pathways.

How are you able to judge, before getting through a squeeze, whether it will be viable getting back through, or is it kind of a rule of thumb that since you were able to get a decent enough position to go in/get out the other side, that the reverse will also be possible?
