Congratulations! You've arrived at my favourite subtle joke of the entire series! Chidi was right all along: he *was* in the Bad Place because he continued to use almond milk despite it being bad for the environment! *Suck it,* everyone who told him to shut up all those times!

You know that saying, “a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth has put its boots on”? I feel like this episode is hitting a similar theme. Caring, doing things correctly, and taking everything into account takes SO much more time and effort than just acting thoughtlessly. Destroying is much easier than building. Improving our lives is a constant battle against entropy and chaos. If we’re not all working towards that goal together, how can we possibly succeed?
@chelsjones
@chelsjones Месяц назад
i’ve never heard that saying before but it’s great
@kosh6612
@kosh6612 Месяц назад
exactly. I think this also demonstrates that sometimes there is a downside to being too considerate etc especially where time is an issue. I think this is why bad people tend to win out, because they are busy making a mess constantly, while the other extreme is still assessing the damage and organizing a committee. Life must be balanced between being considerate of everyone... versus actually living or getting things done. In many respects this is an anaolgue for debates we are having right now... those insisting on independent freedom vs societal good. yeah.. doing the right thing is much harder

god i love this episode, the slow realisation of where it’s going is brilliant. you picked very quickly that the show wasn’t going to go with “bad people manipulate the system so they win and good people loose” because while it’s true, it’s been done before and there’s less nuance to it than these writers usually go for. realising instead that they’re going for not just “there is no ethical consumption under capitalism” but also the system is broken, not because it was made that way but because the biggest difference between eternal beings and humans is that _they don’t change_ and we do. that system probably worked fine when they made it, but it doesn’t anymore - so it needs to be adapted to suit modern humanity. and while all of that’s happening we’re getting beautiful concrete evidence of how much our main humans *have* changed - for the better! tahani tries to help and fails and instead of being mad that janet and jason aren’t appreciating her attempts, she’s upset that they’re not working. not because it makes her look bad - because it means her friends are still hurting. eleanor opens up to chidi with little prompting, she tells him how she’s feeling and actually _trusts_ him to not only not make fun of her feelings, not only to help her, but to still be there when she’s done. chidi pretty much says “we should live in the moment and not think about what’s coming next” which i feel like is pretty plain insane character development that doesn’t really need analysing lol, and jason - well jason has an intellectual disability and should never have been judged using the same standards as the rest of them to begin with. i’m sorry this comment is so long i just LOVE this show and i love your excitement when you see where it’s going - especially when you pick it up like 2 seconds before it’s stated. the show does this so. freaking. well. they mask the conclusion they’re coming to brilliantly so the viewer can get that fun feeling of beating the show to the punchline - but only by a few seconds so it doesn’t actually ruin any of the build up. it’s brilliant.

Definitely on of *the* episodes imo. Like the season 1 finale. It’s changing our perspective and recontextualizing so much of what we’ve seen. The good place decided to take the stance “the real bad guy was capitalism all along” and it nailed it.

We also have to fix this "good people resign when they make a mistake" if they're being "responsible"...but bad people certainly don't! If that continues, then who are you left with?

The good place committee definitely feels very much like my country's governmental departments and offices and it's driving me crazy. You need application sheets just to get another application sheet and then you have to personally go to an office that is only open between 8 and 10 am... ...just for them to tell you you didn't submit something that you definitely submitted which they lost but wont admit that they lost it, so you have to do everything all over again.

The social security office took months and constantly "lost" documents that he had submitted. He had no family and zero money. I mean, look at how it happens in the US. A small handful of people have the power to completely derail and roadblock *any* progress, even if it has broad bipartisan/diverse demographic support, using laws that are *supposed* to be about checks and balances on power, but are being used to force everything to grind to a halt for "review" or "consideration". And even when it's found that the original "review" was groundless, nothing is in place to stop it from happening again and again. (It doesn't help that neither of our political parties want to actually *move forward* on any issues or they would lose their political footballs.)
