CarNinja- “I have a question. Why the hell am I here this is a Chevy.” Me- CarNinja should have said this when he was assisting WatchJRGO on the Camaro 😂😂😂
@Build-A- Ride IF the engine is the only big thing. Porsches ain't cheap to fix. Must be nice getting all your parts for free. And even if he just breaks even, he makes money on the videos so win-win. You or I would struggle to make a profit.
@Build-A- Ride In addition to the motor he will have to redo the interior and those first gen Cayennes love to kill their driveshafts (or cardan shaft as Porsche likes to refer to it as) so I'm sure it'll need a new one of those too. Wonder if things like the AC, stereo and various accessories work on it.
I love that you fix everything wrong with these vehicles, but its no longer a flip. It more of a refurbish that you could sell as a certified used truck. Lol
@@WatchJRGo true. But its nice to see regular vehicles being sorted out and sold to people who need them. I love it. Too many people pressure wash the engine bay and call it sorted
*7:38** That's one badass trans jack, looks like it costs a small fortune. I'm replacing the trans on my 08 denali right now on the floor in my garage and it's much more difficult without a lift and trans jack.*
You may go to far on these cars from a profitability standpoint but you fix them correctly and people are getting good cars from you. You're building a reputation worth having and your honesty is what's building your RU-vid channel up so big. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working.
I hope you can find a good set of used tires minimum. When I see bald tires, I just assume the previous owner didn't have the money to do regular maintenance. It's usually not a good sign.
I use this when I look at cars too. The amount of tread, and what kind of tire. If they had jinyu tires on it, they probably wanted minimum cost to keep the car running
WTF??? If the instructions say you must update the vehicle, you don't just ignore it. 14:03 It's because the overhauled unit has an UPDATED TECHM that doesn't work with the old vehicle. The ONLY time you do not have to update the vehicle is when you REUSE your old TECHM. Getting an overhauled unit off the shelf is not the same as having your own unit rebuilt. I learned this lesson from the guys at Monster, not some youtuber flipping cars.
I work for oreilly's never buy a power torque engine or transmission they do not back there warrantys at all and are just junk we have had so many angry customers because of them. Get tri star they are so much better and actually back there warrantys
If you are installing a rebuilt or reman trans, you should have the cooler flushed at a transmission shop that had a heated solvent air over hydraulic flush machine, designed to clean coolers, or just replace the radiator(if the trans cooler is inside of it). Cooler flush in a can dosen't work well when the previous trans had planet, bearing ,bushing or sprag failure where lots of metal debris is created. And the 6L80/90 are known in the industry as converter dumping, metal making machines.
I'm constantly amazed at how much JR knows, but I also wonder why Johnny allows any of the Wichita Car Mafia to work in his shop. He's jeopardizing his insurance, his equipment is being depreciated, his bay is taken up and I doubt seriously any of these guys compensate him.
"What if I sell my vehicle before the warranty expires? Because your PowerTorque transmission warranty is attached to your vehicle’s VIN, it’s still covered, regardless of ownership."
The thing is the trans is warrantied but labor isn't and that means if it was to fail again and they did honor the warranty you still have to do (or pay to do) the job
If it’s like my local oreallys the warranty is useless anyway. I know of 5 shops that have had issues with their warranty on engines and transmissions. One they even delivered a core as the new one and refused to take it back
They always put An insane core charge on these transmissions because they want you to give them your old trans so they can rebuild it. Its a great business strategy. You essentially never run out of inventory, and if you do. You made $1000 off the core.
I worked a brake shop in the 80's. We saved all the used pads and tossed the in a barrel that would get picked up weekly by a company that sold relined brake pads. The steel backing is the core. They just clean and repaint them and bond or rivet new pad material to them.
Its also logical. When I was a kid Imhad to take the empty cola, beer and fanta bottles back to the store, where I could hsve a small fee returned or trade in for new sodas. That model is still in use at the bars and pubs but that dissapear at home level with recyclabe glass in the early 90s. Some many car parts can be refurbished to a “new” state. Alternators are a nice example, the rewind the copper, the bearings and the diode. Case, shaft, pulley and conmutatores are checked and then, reused. It will save you a lot of money, plus the energy and chemicals involved y recycling the whole alternator is avoided altogether...
Gear Jammer exactly in my state of NY you pay 5 cents for every can/bottle/ or plastic bottle with a few exemptions. And you get your 5 cents back when you turn them in
O'Reilly's warranty isn't transferable.. new owner won't be able to get the warranty honored.. From the O'Reilly website, linked from the product page.. O’Reilly Auto Parts offers a limited warranty on defects in materials and workmanship for any product purchased from O’Reilly Auto Parts including, but not limited to: hardware, vehicle parts, or accessories, as supplied by the manufacturer, which is *_non-transferable, and made ONLY to the original purchaser._* Coverage terminates, including any and all implied warranties such as the implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, at the end of the applicable warranty period or earlier *_if you sell or otherwise transfer ownership of your vehicle_* on which the product was installed. Sucks.. he should have put a used junkyard transmission in it.. 200 bucks.. or rebuilt it himself for ~$500-$600 bucks with a new converter.. putting a $2500 Transmission in an 11 year old 200k+ mile truck to flip was crazy..
Johnny is the MVP for always letting you come destroy (temporarily) his always immaculate shop. He is a true friend. Plus, im sure he's seeing the surge in business because of you and Tyler.
scottcol23 I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s renting out the hoist on an hourly basis to jr. it’s about the only way a shop would let a hoist be used by someone else.
@@mj_aussie_coaster_travels8310 Its always after hours, and its always randomly when Tyler hoover is working on a car too. So he may charge him. But my guess is no, but who am I to know.
@@mj_aussie_coaster_travels8310 or its after hours and it brings business- If I was in the area and had a german car id bring it to Johnny's shop for sure because of youtube
I hope you primed the converter or it will cook it again! You didn’t show removing the converter and pouring about 2 quarts in it. I bet that’s how the new converter got cooked.
Since it came as an assembly from the re-builder it likely already had fluid in the convertor from the dyno/test cell most transmission re-builders run their units through. It even says it was dyno tested on their website.
We never do at my shop. Most converters come with some in it. And when we get a new trans to go in we don't pull the converter either just dump some new fluid in the pan (varies from 5quarts to 10 depending on truck) start it and finish filling the trans
These type of trucks go for 8-12k in my area depending on Year and condition. Most of the Trucks I looked at had 200k+ and were 8k. I finally gave up an took my chances on a slightly wrecked one..
Ok, I know this is going to sound crazy :) I have had 2 cars for about 35 years. One has been a sedan and one has been a van and then to min vans. I can fit plywood, drywall, washer, dryer and more (not all at the same time) :) I can pull my 18 foot boat with the mini-van too. Room for people too. MUCH less cost then a truck and I have never had to do any major repair work on any the vans. Just normal maintenance work. They get up to about 150,00 miles before I replace the van and that usually about 15 years of driving.
That’s no fun having a lift, transmission jack and proper tools. I took a C4 out of a 65 Mustang on the driveway with an old floor jack and enough tools to repair a lawnmower. Took it out, overhauled it, replaced some parts and it worked. Spent about $50 and two weeks time after work. That was before RU-vid.
Same trans I have in my h2. Can confirm. They're garbage. They couldn't have moved the exhaust literally 2 inches to get the pan off the trans without dismantling it?
hey , great series! i really dont think your costs are true to most of us, you use a professionals shop and scan tools and you have the ninja there for help , us lay people dont get that assistance most of the time! but keep'em coming !
I have swapped a few transmissions in my life. I learned from one swap to install two front main seals by driving one in on top of the other. It works every time! I don't like doing the same job twice in one day, so now I always install two new seals every time before I bolt on a transmission.
I appreciate customers that put the plugs back in cores to be returned. Thank you for showing that and your parts person may not say or notice it at the time of return. I promise you that whoever is handling it does appreciate it. The reason being is that if there is fluid in there, it can go everywhere.
It used to be a fun game to drink for every Hoovie car you saw at The Wizard's shop. Now you can do the same drinking game at The Car Ninja's. 2 shots comin up!
I didn’t see him prime the torque converter either. It is a common problem with installing new trans. I bet that’s how the new converter previously replaced got cooked.
It does... they run these on a transmission dyno as well. I’ve probably shown me pre-filling converters in 4 videos so I don’t know why anyone would question that 🍻
P.S. I do NOT miss working in a transmission shop. Work all week and then it takes ALL weekend to get rid of the auto trans fluid stench. Then it's back to get smelly again.
I have to replace rear main seal on a O5 Tahoe I’ve owned for years a Z71 fully loaded and still pristine . But I’ve been putting it off brim working on the ground by myself. Something that in my 20s was a lot easier. Now closer to 50 I’ve been putting it off but will get it done
John, I completely agree with you. I am a true car guy and do not find comfort in getting the cheapest and sending it down the road. I want that truck to give someone years of enjoyment...not problems. That is what makes me happy. The love of money is the root of all evil. The love of cars(and trucks) is happiness! Rock on John!!!
Can wait to be allowed to come south just dunno what we are going to race you with......what do you think? 10sec car/truck 11 sec/ 12? What ever one you chooseYour poor lil LS vehicle will not know what happened lol hmmm Or Dodge V10 Race? Lol Great video as usual 👍🏻
I hope you filled that converter before you put the trans in. Could very well be how the last one went out. They need to be full of fluid immediately or damage will be done when the engine starts.
Seems like I heard him say , " I put 5 Quarts in"...I hope like He_ _ I'm wrong.. ...."Anutha" sad thing : After Year 2021 , R-134a will no longer be for Sale for A/C Recharging @ Dealerships & Independent Shops....So whomever is buying vehicles like this MY 2010 , older & up to 2014, 2015 Models are gonna inherit a Master Headache !!! in the Highest Degree. 1930 - 1992 : R- 12 Freon Refrigerant 1992 - 2021 : R - 134 a Some 2014 Models & Newer to Year 20 _ _ - R1234yf Refrigerant ( The Refrigerant that's gonna cost you "2" Kids minimum to get Charged with the R- 1234yf ) There will be no Retrofitting pipes from R-134a to R-1234yf as R-12 was Retrofitted to R- 134a. before tyler moved into the exclusive neighborhood that he lives in now, did he live in or around your neighborhood? or how did you guys meet? his old videos show his house that looks to be in a neighborhood with similar style houses to yours
JRGo, it's great that you can get that kind of warranty from O'Riley's . . . to bad GM just doesn't build vehicles that don't need replacement transmissions or even offer a warranty half as good. Hoovie: I'm not going to help! JRGo: Whew! Thank God for small favors!😜
Wow that's expensive for a rebuilt transmission. Here in Minot, North Dakota it is only $1500 to have the tranny shop rebuild a 2003 Chevy Silverado transmission with warranty.
Johnny Ninja, not to be confused with Beverly Hills Ninja ( Chris Farley ) Hmmm, < 20k miles on rebuilt trans ? Can you say " rank amateur " . Should've gone to " Precision Transmission " ! Do it right the first time. This truck has officially hit the B.O.A.T. designation. ( Break Out Another Thousand ) May as well go for wheelz & tyres ! Cheers John Ross.
15:58 not bad ! I was paying around 1500 to have ford A4LD Transmissions rebuilt and felt lucky if they lasted a few years. They were the worst transmissions I’ve ever had the displeasure or curse to deal with
I have 09 suburban that the transmission failed! And I've read you have to reprogram the computer if you swap the transmission, is that true????? Did you have to do anything to that?
While we’re here, anyone got advice, prior knowledge on 6l80s? Working on an 09 Tahoe ltz no reverse goes forward in neutral and reverse and when you cut it off and back on it jerks forward about a foot. Doesn’t shift out of 1st gear and the “manual” shifting doesn’t work either, already tried resetting the trans changed fluid and filter. Any help would be appreciated
It seems to me that these trucks have converter problems... Mine's broken, lot's of people have had issue's with them on forums, previous owner of this truck replaced his. Jesus Chevy, not cool man...
Bro I’m havin problems with my 13 5.3 pos Chevy and I think this vid actually really help me get a good idea on what I’m about to do hopeful I don’t fuck it up if I do it myself but then I have to do it on the ground😭😭
If I could help Watch JR Goes work on the Silverado transmission I would drink the cold Bartle Skeets and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
Not even watching this video and an owner of gm trucks since about 1980 the hydramatic transmissions are the best in the business unless your driving your truck recklessly and very often the transmission in your gm truck should last at least over 10 years with little or no problems i currently drive a 10 silverado with the 53 and i have about 200000 km or 120000 miles and she like new...you don't want any problems service your stuff its that simple
06:58 You sound like Thomas Edison, when he lost his shirt on an ore extraction process-- "Well, it's all gone, but we had a hell of a good time spending it!"
whoever says you paid 2 much hasnt shopped a 2010 GM 4l60E. its a one year unit so cant even find a used one. in fact the only reman i could find for mine was 2500$ with all the updates.
Paused at 0:47 seconds. Transmission cooler clean? If the transmission has to be replaced, best replace the cooler and the lines. Otherwise all those metal shavings are just gonna go plug up the valve body and ruin the new tranny.
Where did you buy this truck? Please teach me where to buy a late model truck like yours for such a low price. In my younger days, I have swapped in a few engines, and transmissions that were not intended to be used in my old truck. I muddled through somehow!
I just bought a 2017 Silverado and scored to death of the trans I had no idea about the transmissions in these trucks everyone I have talk to since I got mine has said good things about there’s I pray that I got a good one it has 92774 on it and the trans fluid has not been changed in it yet do you think I should drop the pan and change the filter and fluid ???!
I don't know why transmissions cost as much as engine to rebuild Do not really need special tools A little of ingenuity I was able to rebuild 4L60 In my backyard Only had to replace one hard part $180 w oil
4l60 is a bit different from the 6l80, but I agree, 1500 is a lot for a reman 4l60 unit, and 400 for torque converter but you are paying for that warranty. So the 6 spd only adds about 500 more dollars, presumably for a beefier torque converter and 1 more sets of clutches/ sprags. They make money on averages... the average transmission only needs a clutch set, gasket kit, soft parts and converter rebuild. Unfortunately the average person has to absorb the excessively damaged unit which also needs a drum, pistons, valve body or solenoid set.
I I understand the parts kit didn't cost much, the labor and expertise of the builder is what costs money. Plus you need to have the torque converter cut cleaned and welded up or replace with reman, you will never be able to flush wear particles out a torque converter. FWIW engine rebuild kits only cost about 250 for gaskets and bearings, the machine work is what runs the cost up. May as well get a jasper reman for 2kwith 3yr, unlimited miles warranty if you are gonna spend 1500 with no warranty
Ez I hanged around a engine repair shop On the corner of my block it took a lot of specialize machines expensive machines to do an engine block resurfacing the heads the block regrinding the valves Boring the block Honing the block magna flux And many more blah blah blah machines The only tools I used was a big ass screwdriver And a bucket that I cut up and some blocks of wood and four hands
my truck got the stage 3 billet 6l80 and billet stall. tstat delete, inline bar and fin w/fan, delete radiator lines, redline, morroso pan, and hptune only cost $10k
Waste of money to put in a 2 wheel drive truck they are worthless stupid unless an old vintage truck but anything built 1990 and on 2 WD are not worth anything!
It's no longer a flip it's a restored vehichle. Flip cars you go to the scrap yard get a used trans for $200-$400 and send it on its way to be someone eles problem.
