It makes more sense to have the guide or pulley on the moving side of the rope.
@tim-o-tree154
@tim-o-tree154 9 месяцев назад
Right? I keep seeing it set up with the pulley in the knot, where it serves no purpose. However, it seems like this is necessary to keep the device oriented propertly. If you set it up with the pulley on the climbing leg of the line, there’s no knot in the word small enough to cinch down on the bar on the other side. With this setup, the device could easily twist out of alignment. Jamming the pulley in the knot seems to be compensating for deficiencies in the design.
@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
Yes it will work that way also.
@emzzzz992
@emzzzz992 9 месяцев назад
It’s no different than using a double fisherman’s knot on a biner. It will cinch fine. Having to tie a butterfly knot to fit the pulley makes no sense and if that’s what they recommend then I will pass on this piece of equipment and continue using a quickie. @@tim-o-tree154

Yes I believe if you install it with the sheave in the butterfly it has the added kilo newton rating.

What a neat piece of gear. The action is just like their rigging blocks. Thanks for filling me in. I'm going to pick one up.

I see the utility for a canopy anchor, as the device reduces friction and makes retrieval easier, but I’m not sure what the advantage is for a base tie. Lots of base tie methods actually introduce extra friction via half hitches or other means to prevent it from creeping up the trunk between load cycles. By lowering friction to the max, using this device in a base tie actually increases the risk of it creeping up.

I think this would be gold for a Texas tug canopy anchor.

I'm not sure why you don't choke down your basal anchors around the trunk before weighting it. The anchor is much less likely to slide up the trunk if you do this simple, easy, quick step before weighting.

I am about to lose the pulley section. According to the manual, recommend no sheave at the top anchor. I see that the orientation of the butterfly knot is fixed.

Hi Bino! I don’t know this piece of equipment the reason I mention because my try would be to use in a different way, I will try to explain how: The “U” shape part I would put in the loop of the butterfly knot and small rolling pulley with the pin on the moving rope. What’s you’re take or opinion on that approach?! Thank you in advance for your answer. Erik from Budapest / Hungary 🇭🇺
@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
Yes both ways will work. It seems that when you but the sheave in the Butterfly you have that added kilo newton strength.
@belewis
@belewis 9 месяцев назад
Not sure why everyone is commenting as if this makes a big difference. No part of the rope is moving when you're climbing this SRT way correct? The UltraLink just functions as a glorified girth hitch over the branch. The pulley wouldn't be rolling once you start to climb. Anyway I'm getting one of these.

@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
Because it just tends your line it doesn't have to be rated. You can buy them at a hardware store. It's called a Trigger Snap or Clip. You just have to make sure the mouth of it opens up enough for what you plan on using for. The piece I have to attach it is called a shackle. Hope this helps.

Wouldn't it be more effective if you run the working end through the sheave instead of the horseshoe part? It seems like you are losing efficiency. Redirects would pull out much smoother with the rope running through the spinning sheave on a canopy anchor. The Texas Tug operates on the same principle.
@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
Yes it would be when planning on redirects.

Hi Bino!, just curious as where did you order your ultra link from? I’ve browsed quite a bit but no luck with the US retailers. Some still have the older version but not the refined one. Nice review by the way!

That's absurd, I seen that on tree buzz. Personally I'd hold onto it past the week just to be a pain, they still have to replace it if they recall it, it's a major safety/liability issue otherwise. Quickie is sweet and simple for canopy anchor, and a steel biner for a basal tie with a sewn in eye work for me.

So .... Why not just midline and run rope through then pull up?
@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
Yes that works if you are setting up from the ground.

Bino needs to clarify why he uses the pulley on the stationary side of the cinch…this based on the amount of responses below from myself and other experienced climbers who would use it on the moving side of the cinch. Tying an alpine butterfly to “fit” the pulley makes no sense and is not worth the hassle in imo.
@belewis
@belewis 9 месяцев назад
He's essentially girth hitching the rope over the branch to climb SRT. The butterfly by itself works, but the UltraLink just lets you do a quick anchor reposition without removing hardware. Anyway none of the rope is moving in this system is it?
@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
True you can use it the other way in reverse but I like the idea of it holding it in place so the ultra link won't rotate. I plan on making a couple more videos with this Ultra link a couple different ways.

hello. nice device. sorry for my english, i'm french. i dont understand why you are using the device on this way. the pulley should be on the moving rope and not on the butterfly. Otherwise the pulley has no efficiency. What did i not understand ? thanks
@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
Very true but is does have added strength and for me it is holding the Ultra link in place so it won't rotate. Your English is very well spoken. Take care!

I don't care about the pulley part, for me the quickie becomes useless once the tiny spring loaded buttons get sap inside them. This looks better.

Just extra rubbish that does nothing a karabiner or a knot can’t do why would you bother risking it not being clipped together properly.Just seems like another device that creates more danger coz you gotta make sure pin is locked in🤷‍♂️
@patrickmuzzi
@patrickmuzzi 9 месяцев назад
Well you're not supposed to side load a carabineer so there's that. And if you can't see where a quick link like this or the quickie come in handy, you just don't climb.
@networkengineer.online
@networkengineer.online 9 месяцев назад
Now get 3-5 of these instead of 3-5 quicky links? Seems a preference or guidance on whether to put the pully in one spot or the other... You can see the options and then try to think of some more. Thx Bino and team.
@BinoH
@BinoH 9 месяцев назад
I think both are good. you could run the Ultra link without the sheave and it would be one less thing to worry about.
@alotl1kevegas860

Where I think the quick link will shine, is for a Texas tug canopy anchor.
