It's because he wanted the main controls to be the steering wheels, shoulder buttons, and the start and select button. If he added a PS2 Controller, there would be a Left and Right Analog stick, that's why he changed it to a PS1 controller.

Hey Evan, I watched this video 4 years ago in middle school and it inspired me to get involved in stuff like this. Tomorrow is my first day in uni as an electrical engineer and I came back to watch this video as a reminder of what brought me to where I am now Hopefully we’ll get more videos like this in the future !

Some study and train their hearts out, but never achieve their goal. Some try so hard they wind up suicidal. Some are born with instant talent, almost as if they were created for one specific thing. No amount of time in school can create a master engineer, the master engineer simply is on another level, math and invention come easy to them.
