I really like what they are doing with this game. I remember in the older Sims games how the sim would sometimes address the person playing them (me), wave at them and then say something in an attempt to get their needs met. I always wished that it was possible for the sim to ask me something or for something. This isn't the same concept but I definitely like where Paradox is going with this. They are definitely making much more of an effort than is being made in The Sims.

well, it's not like there wasn't anything new RTX, Parallax occlusion, Subsurface scattering, or HDR, for example, it's just that they were very focused on graphics for a long time. because that was/is Nvidia's bread and butter but we reached a point of diminishing returns. so what they have started to push now is the tensor cores specialised for AI stuff.

A memory system? Finallyyyy. I love how they're orienting this game around the importance of relationships. Ts4 is lackluster because it's missing that component. Not having control over the game and the lack of repetition definitely appeals to me too, ive been asking for this for the longest time and thankfully the foundations of this game allow us to have just that.
@SimmerErin

yep, all characters will have their own memories, which you can access . I agree relationships and unique ways characters interact- at least to me0 is very important
@SkinnierSteve
@SkinnierSteve Год назад
The way I understand is that there are around a thousand pre-written lines, which you can change or add new ones. They said in that dialogue video that the character still replied as if it was the original line, and to change that you need to do so from the conversation editor. So it seems like it does not adapt to what you type, it acts like it is the original unedited line unless you edit the responses manually. From what I understand based on the conversation creator screenshot, each dialogue option you pick can get you a positive, neutral or bad response. You can probably manually add more types though, but yeah. The traits, location, relationships, likes, dislikes, memories, etc will be the things that generate the possible dialogue options you can choose from, which you can edit. But again, you still have to edit the possible responses if you want the conversation to be adapted to the change you made. There was also a short posted where Rocio said if you edit dialogue, those edited lines will be used by all characters in the same type of circumstance or relationship. So I think the game will just use the thousand or so pre written lines in the appropriate circumstances, and you can change or add to it as you please.
@SimmerErin
@SimmerErin Год назад
Yes, as I said (maybe I did not explain well), you can edit the text, but you do not have to. NPCs will also live their lives while you are not controlling them.

I wondered if the conversations are some generative AI when you first talked about it - otherwise they might get boring very fast or you would need to write endless amounts of dialogue. As a Data Scientist myself, I'd be very interested to know what kind of algorithms they use and how and on what kind of data they are trained if they are AI generated. What EA calls AI for example really isn't AI in my eyes...

wow this seens to be something really interesting, for me the big issue will be "perfomance" and bloated saves" because the ai will will have to store each new speech and store and generate different possible "reactions" to each speech, leading to really big perfomance or "load times issues. while we already at a point to have "tech for that" it's still too early for me to go on that without a proper way to deal with the performance issues.

I personally think it's gonna be great, but I like being a storyteller. For those that don't, I think them having pre-made dialogue is a great alternative. These features are basically just adding in a more customizable and in-depth rpg element but with the ability to learn. Also, the gaming industry has really needed some major innovation lately. Nothing really ground-breaking has come out in awhile so this is like a breath of fresh air. It's also new so I do expect some hick ups and bugs but as you said this is likely the future of gaming so once this comes out there will likely be other devs who pick up on and will probably improve upon this concept in other games, like imagine a game series like Final Fantasy or Elder Scrolls or Pokemon having realistic interactions with NPCs in say the next 10 years. I know it can be scary cause it's new and new can be overwhelming but great things are seldom created from playing it safe.
@SimmerErin
@SimmerErin Год назад
is is true- it feels like there hasn't been much innovation for a while. It won't be for everyone, nor will it be flawless- but the good news is that it's taking a risk and potentially adding more immersion and complexity

It makes sense that they'd use something like generative AI for games. That makes a lot more sense than using it for other purposes (like writing tech manuals, writing term papers, writing journal articles, etc.) It's unlikely to cause harm the way doing it in the world outside of games would. Of course, they'd have to have a way to prevent some "inappropriate" responses. Certainly, they had to put some restrictions on the AI in Microsoft's new AI, Bing Chat. People who asked more than about 5 questions ended up getting things like the AI flirting with them or suggesting murder, or other "weirdness." Not something that I'd want in my game! I really like the idea of being able to import names for the game to use. Since Snowy Escapes came out, almost all the new Sims that the game produces have Japanese names. The only time I get other names seems to be if I go to Selvadorado. Then I get Latino/Hispanic names popping up. But not nearly to the extent that TS4 produces Japanese names. I use the actor career a lot in my game, and I haven't had anything but Japanese names for any of the characters there for generations. (I don't get the same thing when I ask for a suggested name in CAS, oddly enough.)

I feel like this reaches beyond what has ever been done in a game, and it's both exciting and scary. Not just a scripted AI, that responds to known possible inputs that the player chooses from, but responding to something random? I remember over 10 years ago in SL, I was amusing myself with an NPC bartender who would give the most silly responses to things you typed in chat. I'm hoping that the humans won't be toooo smart, and give some unintentional comic relief for their replies to our input. Our human: "I was thinking of going fishing later" their answer: "I don't feel that way about you, maybe later"
@SimmerErin
@SimmerErin Год назад

@rainbow_lorelei
@rainbow_lorelei Год назад
I know when it comes to randomization or auto generated content it's more common to randomize or roll once, think game seeds like in minecraft. To cut down on corruption and lag I think it would be best to auto generate once, save, and reuse. For example, say you wanted to generate actions for a character: auto generate a routine for them and have them repeat it, only changing it when player actions interupt it, auto generatating for the remainder of the day, then go back to the schedule the next day so the system can adapt and respond to player imput without running a million actions in the background that the player never sees. For more rarity the schedule could generate as a main routine and one or more alternates, then the schedule for the day could be randomized as a single roll at the start of the day for 10% of the population or even everyone. Every single action of every single character being calculated in the background while you're just playing with your main character at home for the day is a HUGE waste of resorces, a HUGE time bomb for save corruption, and a HUGE EVER INCREASING file size/number if implimented as described. I believe that the devs know this and most likely are implimenting it much more strategically. Still I'm glad to hear that they're intrested in trying as this really is a leap forward we've been waiting for since forever.

Considering the rapid pace of AI development, it's difficult to anticipate the potential impact of AI integration in games at this point. In my view, the initial year of the so-called "early access" phase will likely be chaotic, but somebody who’s wise will eventually figure out how to balance between AI and conventional technology. AI can be utilized to determine Sim behavior, generate dialogue, and create events like quests, and the current technology is adequate for this purpose. In the long term, we may even expect AI to be able to decorate rooms and generate buildings, clothing, and accessories. However, I do have some concerns. At present, it appears that LBY developers lack a solid, long-term vision and are too easily swayed by forum posts and current trends. They may be focused on developing the game through early access in response to player feedback rather than having a clear long-term plan. Nevertheless, all I want from the developers is to make an effort to support robust modding and provide a stable sandbox that allows for endless creative possibilities. If they do so, I hope that the community can turn this game into something great.
@SimmerErin

I think I tried one of those generative AIs on a webchat and I was blown away by how well it reacted to my inputs. Since I do roleplaying for 30+ years now, I sometimes used rather long explanations on what I was doing and the AI never failed to pick up on it. To see this technology now used for a simulation like this sounds amazing. As stated in other posts, we realy need to do a few steps forward when it comes to technology in gaming. Grafik is not everything, and it is sad to see how some of the big developers are just to lazy/afraid to try something new but just cling to the old same same because if feels safe for them and generates income. So the more I keep hearing about Life by you, the more exited I get.

While The Sims 4 can feel 'too simple' at times with its gameplay and functionality, Life by You risks being too complex to the point that we risk features overwhelming the player, or worse, causing glitches in the game. Maybe I misunderstood something, but I think the answer is not adapted to the question. The dialogue remains the same, you can only change the tone and style. If you look at it, the topic was chemistry, the question is the same, just a bit more humorously posed, because the answer will be to the original question. Same with the asterisk...
@SimmerErin

the answer is based upon what you say. Go back and look at the romantic pun they added. the response is not a generic romantic thing back but something that references what the person said, it also includes language related to stars (telescope)

I mean it is because the original answer would have been sg lik that: the chemistry is bubbling between us. It have been replaced with a chemistry related pun. Same goes with the telescope and star things. I think the answer is tied to the original conversation. Even the narrator says something about it. So if you change the chemistry related question to a sport related one the answer won't make any sense.

This game is sounding more and more complicated to play, and not for the good, at least for me. I just want a plunk and play game I already don't like CAS, I certainly don't want to have to fix conversations at all, never mind for everyone in the neighborhood. That is (as you said) tedious to say the least. I mean, I save my sims from 100 baby challenges so I have tons of already organized/randomized and CASed sims to plunk in a new game or whatever but the AI basing responses on past dialogue changes? How long do you have to do that (sweat equity in a way) before you have the AI to a point where the majority of answers from every "agent" (or whatever they call them) will be what you want? Which also brings in the players personality into it, if the player is more introverted and doesn't go to bars and festivals (or whatever) and doesn't like/want interact with the others in the neighborhood, how would that game work exactly? This seems like an extroverts only club game, or a "single player" game that is being used as the alpha version of a multiplayer game (version two), which I have no interest in at all. Everything I hear about this game is less and less appealing.

This is actually really exciting to me. I was thinking it would be good for the conversations, and now here it is as a real feature. The AI would be a huge help for customization and creating the game I want. I do expect limitations, though. I like when unexpected things happen in the game, so writing all my own dialogue seemed counter intuitive to that. But, if the AI can help and respond and even speak in dialects, that's really cool! Also I was relieved to read an article that said the nudity thing will be turned off by default. That was a relief. So, now I'm back fully to being completely excited for this game. I was annoyed, however; that they used "storytelling" as an excuse for not wanting unexpected deaths in that article, but then saying they want the "full scope of human existence" in the article about nudity. Is death not part of life? Sad or scary themes are also an important part of storytelling. I hope as they go they realize that and could at least make it optional for people who want it. But, with the predictive AI and customization we could probably just make it ourselves. Anyway, thank you as always, Erin. This is a very exciting video.

Exciting but the need for quality control to actively monitor what's going on to keep the generative AI from going off whatever rails the company deems are bad, sounds a lot like having one's gameplay constantly surveilled, which feels contrary to the mission to provide the offline, world-of-your-own, private experience. Typing words directly instead of simply choosing an interaction description and leaving the details up to the imagination also sounds awkward. Simlish was a great idea for keeping things from getting so specific that they become robotic and offputting. purportedly. I never have had issues, but I also don't do many generations that said -technology of a 2009 game is hard to compare -computer spec requirements are a lot higher than those required for 3 could it still cause issues? of course, but one must also keep those caveats in mind

Yeah even though it does sound exciting and kind of cool, it also sounds kind of scary, I mean it seems like it could be a bit overwhelming for not only players, but also our PC's! I mean like I can see why it will need for our PC's to have at least a 16 GB memory cards, because this will be needed to just handle the memory system of the game alone! And yeah I don't think The Sims should even think of trying to do this, they can barely handle making new added game play for TS4 that actually works, with out glitching or totally breaking our games, I can't see them successfully pulling this off, not anytime soon! I will be surprise if they manage to do a successful open world with TS5, which I highly doubt they will be successful, since I am sure they aren't going to stop doing the things that screwed up TS3 and even though it's not a open world TS4 as well, just not as bad as TS3! I am talking about them having way too many randomized Sims, in an open world, having the system creating basically background Sims everywhere at the same time, along with the already premade Sims, is just too much, the game wasn't done well enough to handle it! I used to play the Elder Scrolls games, like Skyrim, and its previous games, and they have a open world and its even somewhat a sandbox game, but somehow it tends to work, though I think it was because the people in it weren't always doing things while you weren't anywhere around them, unlike with TS3! Which is why Life By You having every character off doing their thing, going to work, going to school and so on, sounds a bit much, to tell the truth! So now I am probably even more likely to wait for a few months after it's early access is released in September, before considering whether to get it or not! Unless I see something that makes feel a better about it!

It might not appeal to everyone. But at some point in the future, I’m sure this kind of technology will be implemented into most all video games. Certainly a very interesting time for gaming!

Look AI has been around for decades in video games (it is used to be in NPC actions or single player combats/RPG/etc), but this form of generative AI is AI to a whole new level. Not only it "learns" how to react to feedback but also respond more naturally. Not sure if it is relevant but it sure sounds like the primitive AI the "fake boyfriend/girlfriend" app that has been around for years hahah.

My thought when I heard this went immediately to the demands the game puts on the system you're running it on. The majority of Sims players are casual gamers who don't invest in a dedicated gaming machine and while sims 4 went too far on the 'cut it down so you can run it on a potato' route this is either going to make the game take up a huge amount of space on your computer or else require you to be online the whole time so it can use an online AI.

It'd be great if we could get dialogue that suits our own culture, though. We in other countries just don't use the same kind of dialogues that America uses - we have our own unique way of saying things. Our own insults, our own reactions, our own jokes, our own sense of humour which are very, very different from America in particular. I'd like to get away from that kind of non-cultural dialogue that just doesn't seem natural to us.

the technology may not be quite there yet= while interesting that sounds pretty complex. Then you'd have to account for cultures all around the world, or at least select some. @@SimmerErin I don't mean that I expect every culture to be totally acclimatised - of course that's not feasible, I mostly mean that the dialogue that I've seen seems very specifically American at this point. It'd be nicer if the shipped dialogue was less country specific, more generic so that at least every other country didn't have to mine through the dialogue to rid it of Americanisms. In The Sims we all have to put up with being fed American culture most of the time, but at least it's not in the dialogue. We outside of America will all be constantly editing dialogue for the first long while just to get rid of these.

So Life by you and Paralives is being worked on and showing progress...yet a 9 year old game is gonna release 4 scraps for us in the next few months...?? Seriously the sims4 needs to step their game up. I think I'm just ready for sims5. Sims4 has been a great game but I'm ready for something different. It's a ten year old game with outdated stuff. Growing Together was a little nice addition to bring to put some spice into the vanilla game. But a 40 dollar EP isn't gonna change a game that wasn't ready to launch in the first place. They shouldn't have rushed a game that wasn't ready to launch. Since then they have release bad and broken packs (dream home Decorator, highschool years, my first pet, luxury party, my wedding stories, etc). But why change this? If you are a profitable million/billion dollar company where people are constantly buying your products no matter what condition they are in, EA has no reason to change. If anything it's more fault to the consumer than EA. If TS5 is the same quality as paralives and life by you then it should be fine. However, if paralives and life by you blow TS5 out of the water I wouldn't be surprised if the sims5 fails. I'm not saying I want TS5 to fail; however, I think people are getting sick of what EA has done for the last nine years. I calculated it and nearly 40% of the sims's lifespan has been the sims4. But if EA can keep making money and release garbage it's smart on their part and not even their fault. EA is a company first and foremost. That's another thing that people never talk about. How do we know that these new simulation games won't be as cashgraby as the sims4? There's no way of knowing that they won't. People want something new and exciting, I get it. I think the competition between the three games will be good, however. Life simulation is a niche gaming genre that we haven't seen a lot of. I hope that the competition between the three games means that there will be less cashbrabby DLC in the future. There's no way of knowing though

The idea of typing whatever you want and get a response is interesting. However, I am skepticle on how extensive these responses are. For example, I type in Vietnamese, will the AI recognize it? This runs into how the game handles languages. Moreover, how they are going to resolve the savefile bloating with the memory system through time is a concern. I agree with you on option of skipping and automating conversation. I'm not a good conversationalist to anyone. This a reason I favor Carl's "Try to make friends" mod. The mod automates conversation on sims 😅.
@SimmerErin
@SimmerErin Год назад
no idea how it works- I presume at very least you'd have to set one language and stick with it- like it's english in the settings and will only recognize english not sure what happens if it doesn't understand something no clues about the bloating issues, wish I could be more helpful
