During the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant orders a frontal assault on entrenched Confederates at Cold Harbor, Virginia, resulting in 7,000 Union casualties in less than an hour of fighting-Grant considers it his greatest mistake of the war
June 3, 1937
Nearly six months after abdicating the throne, the duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, marries Wallis Warfield, a recently divorced American socialite, at the Chateau de Cande in France-his younger brother was proclaimed King George VI after Edward VIII’s 325-day reign ended

Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. makes a visit to Arizona, giving a brief speech at a church in Phoenix and a longer speech to 8,000 people at Arizona State University’s football stadium in Tempe-the speeches are thought to be lost to history until a recording of them is discovered at a Phoenix Goodwill store in 2013 and purchased for $3

Ed White becomes the first American astronaut to walk in space, attached to the Gemini 4 spacecraft by a 25-foot tether and controlling his movements with a hand-held jet-propulsion gun-the first human to walk in space was Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov 11 weeks earlier

After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, former heavyweight boxing champion and civil rights activist Muhammad Ali dies of respiratory complications at age 74 in Scottsdale, Arizona-he is buried in the historic Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky
