I own the m57 with the zf6 auto in a 110 and i can genuinly say what a difference it makes. Marcus mentioned the refinement a fair bit and i can say hes completely right. Theyre quiet with plenty of power. so smooth when running even on idle that its not shanking the car apart like a 300. Genuinly a good engine and gear box to fit in a defender. Id like to try a td5 auto and a n57 zf8 auto in a defender just to compare the three. If anyone was thinking about doing a conversion, id definitely recommend this. Atrention Speed demons, it shifts. The amount of times someones tried to over take me at the lights and have lost is amazing. Really is a sleeper

Very interesting. I'm just about to embark on an M54 conversion, at the moment to R380. Interesting to see what other gearbox options I might get with that adapter from syncro (ecus permitting of course) 🙂

2 done in Australia one with a 4.4 twin turbo supercharged out of a range rover and a 5.0 litre one same specs. And another with a 7.2 V8 diesel. I like the Cummins 6b engines put in defenders. Alot done in the U.k.

@@rexpratt173 yeah few petrol v8 conversions over here to. Be impressed if some could fab a 4.4 tdv8 and the 8 speed box in a defender. The Cummings engine isn't all its hyped up to be it's a very heavy engine and stock there 150hp

@@jameswatts9618 that would be awesome. I've had a drive 4+4 tracks in a range rover 4.4 litre super charged twin turbo and it had a bit of work done. And it was amazing through the mud and I went through 1.3 metres of water. I just dropped the air in the tyres to 10 pond and it just floated over very dry dead sand with a trailer Amazing piece of a machinery. I would like a 1998 tdi300 model defender and do a engine conversion with a manual gearbox.

DriveLife that’s actually been happening officially for a while now, longer than you’d think too and vice-versa! For example, the V8s in the first generation Range Rover sports are actually from BMW

"Synchro Transmissions are GOING to develop the adaptor plate to fit the LT230 transfer box on the back [of the gearbox]" So, erm, does this thing currently have low-range? Is it even 4WD currently? I didn't see any kind of hi/low selector inside the vehicle. I can't really see an LT230 lasting very long in low range with >250bhp going through it.

Some defenders come with an M52 from factory, so I'm sure a parts bin conversion is possible.

Wow! Bmw is the ultimate driving machine! Its funny that I can still hear many defender noise! So I guess there is no limit to defender engine swap! I am totally against engine swap but if I can have 2 defenders, I would do it! I am interested in alfa romeo engine as their engines sounds best or possible to get benz engines!???? Or even American big engine???? Honestly, Land rover should have kept old defender as well as new one. They could sell it as Land rover classic with jaguar motor in it! Thanks for the video!

Alfa romeo is unreliable, put a bmw like here or i suggest the 2.0tdi from vw, easily tunable and very reliable

@@kabaottoemulsion1869 if you want a Defender with a great reliable engine, pick a Buick 5.7 put some aluminum heads from TA Performance and a RAM Stealth MPFI. Rover 4.6 V8 is a Buick small block. So there you will have the closest thing to a direct swap with reliability and big power.

Nathi Olifant It’s a PSA engine to be exact, made originally for the Peugeot 806, Citreon version as well, not a FORD engine.. that’s why it’s got two sets of belts, where it’s supposed to be fitted transverse for access and not longitude as fitted in the Discovery in its 2.7 and 3.0 guises..

Each time has his own boys. Already 50 years ago they put a Porsche Engine in a VW Käfer for self-presentation. These modifications are maybe a technical challenge, but does'r suit into a classic Land Rover Defender. Thankd God, my opinion does not matter.

B.M.W engines are the best in the world because it was once used in a Mclaren F1,the fastest car in the world at the time.

@@gregh7457 BMW engines are very durable too the M50 engine in my 30 yearly old E36 still works perfectly,plus it as never been taken apart for an overhaul.
