I’ve had mine in miracle grow for years and it hasn’t rotted. I have mine potted and protected under my roof soffit. You’re does look good ❤ though in that terracotta pot and with that soil. Gonna have to go buy me a shallow pot tomorrow.

Hi Guy. Not to brag, or anything, but I have one with a caudex at least 2.5 times that size. Looks to be a single seed-grown type caudex; kind of ovoid, or egg shaped. I can't take credit for the size though, it was pretty big already when I rescued it. And the canopy is probably 3 feet by 4 feet; but very "leggy" because I haven't pruned very much in the several years that I've had it. I'm hoping to prune it back to get a nicer shape and more flowers. I don't even know how old this one is. One of my neighbors put it out on the curb when they were preparing to move out of state to a colder part of the country. I couldn't believe they were tossing out such a large Desert Rose, big nice pot, saucer and all! It had lived on their patio (Zone 10), but couldn't do that where they were moving. I happily rescued it with my lawn wagon and then realized it's pot was all infested with Fire Ants!!! Yikes! I set it out in the side yard and sprinkled a granular product that works well for Fire Ants and in a couple of days, no ants at all. So it has lived happily in a pot with well draining soil out in the side yard for several years without too much interference from me. I only need to water it in drought conditions, which isn't too often. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Thanks for all the good information. Enjoyed the video.

I had no idea. I learned so much from you today. I live in the Fl Keys and was going to take a cutting. Now I know I want to buy one and what to look for.

I always use cinnamon. There was a time when I didn’t but on occasion I did have an issue. I didn’t cut all the little roots I think they add to the look. Here in San Antonio I don’t find any large desert rose at all. And are you advertising for Sol? I would go broke if I had to buy pre mix based soil. At over 200 trees and plants if I’m not making my own soils I’m losing money.

I use primarily sol soils for all adeniums. But I only have 30 of them. If I had that many I definitely would probably have to make my own mix. If you are looking for a good variety and don’t mind a drive, I would recommend Fred Reyes Greenhouses in Simonton, TX. They are on the west side of Houston. Probably a 2 hours drive or so from San Antonio.

Do you have to hand pollinate them or are there pollinators that go to adenium in your area? I live in Argentina and two of mine have flowered three summers in a row but I've never gotten seed pods
@texasgardenguy
@texasgardenguy 2 месяца назад
It can take up to 7 years for them to produce seeds. I don’t hand pollinate. The bees usually do it for me.

can you replant those larger roots that you cut off or the nub?
@texasgardenguy

I’ve never replanted the roots. I meant that you could replant the cuttings from the top.

I have four of these and trimmed them up this spring and they have put out lots of leaves. But no blooms😕 they sit out on the south side of my house but they do not sit in the direct sun. Do they have to be in direct sun to get blooms. They are 24 inches from the sun. I was afraid it would blister their leaves. I live 60 E of Lubbock. Thank you

Do you fertilize them? I use a plumeria fertilizer about once a month during the growing season. I’m also watering daily.
@rheamelton633
@rheamelton633 2 месяца назад
No I haven’t fertilized them. Will look at getting some for spring most of my Caudex are all sunken in and not round. Guess I’m not watering them often enough. Will they ever fill back out?
@texasgardenguy

@rheamelton633 it’s sunken in?
@rheamelton633

Yes instead of round it has sunken in to have rounded corners of a square.

this is my all time favorite plant; however! use gloves! The plant contains toxic compounds called cardiac glycosides, which can affect the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and blood electrolyte levels. cutting those roots gets sap on your hands and you just don't know how often you touch your eyes or nose.
@texasgardenguy
@texasgardenguy 2 месяца назад
I mention that in the video. I don’t use gloves unless I’m doing pruning. I also did not water it for about a week before. That will also help out with excessive sap flow. Then I also won’t water for another week
