I am physically disabled and Visually Impaired City I live in I requested the crosswalk signal things they put one in by the highway it doesn't work, and if I want to cross the street to go shopping I would have to go four blocks out of my way to cross at an intersection by the highway just to walk on the other side of the street where one of the shops is. Mind you there is a traffic light right by the shop but they won't put in one of the visually impaired cross things because they just put in a new one
@@windiwallace3442 I just want to let you know that's in violation of the ADA act. If a person with a disability requests the city provide reasonable accommodation, and it's denied, find a pro bono lawyer and get it solved.
Even though I know this video has an elevator off to the right, it's still a funny thought...I can already picture myself debating whether it'll hurt more to try and scale that mountain or to try and circle around to the front, and deciding I was wrong halfway through either choice 😂
I'm a wheelchair user, I asked for directions to the disabled toilets in a Starbucks. The worker looked at me and said, "I promise I'm not making fun of you, or taking the piss, but they are up those stairs, I'm so sorry." Pointing to a set of four steps. .... she was lovely and it wasn't her fault so I just laughed and asked her about her horror stories, those stairs hurt her soul. Honestly funny as a joke or after thought, but experiencing it was not fun.
I had the same thing happen, but it was in a pizzeria and the toilets, regular and disabled, were in the basement down a spiral staircase. The guy explained where they were, apologized profusely and said there's one in the store next door. He sounded almost embarrassed, but I just laughed and said not to worry, it isn't the weirdest one I've seen lol. I always feel bad in those situations, I know for a fact the workers don't have any say in the matter, so I feel like an ass for making them feel unaccommodating. PS. The weirdest one I've seen (so far) was a disabled toilet that you could only access through a door in the back of the men's restroom. As in I, a woman, had to just casually roll by a row of urinals, some of which were in use 🙈

I am disabled but I can walk just fine. I cant open doors very easily due to hand weakness. There are many reasons people need help with doors, not just wheelchair users.

Some people can't pull heavy weight for example I have a bum left arm with nerve damage and my right arm isn't much better although I can use it a little my nerve damage flairs up really bad if I pull anything heavy. Being disabled doesn't mean you are a quadriplegic in a wheelchair in an iron lung with a stoma and have to eat thru a tube. 😮💨😮💨😮💨 and not all disabilities are visible. I can't tell you how many times people have straight up yelled at me for using handicapped/accesible things because "I look fine."

Yes. We had a lady look at my brother in a wheelchair completely disabled and said I can bring the chair to the top for you. You can walk up those stairs right. We all looked at her and he came back with yeah I just roll around in this for fun all day. He just rolled out to the car. My mom tore the lady a new butt hole. She said I think she understands now. She told my mom that everyone she knew would get up and walk the chair was so they could get handicapped signs. That's not how that works but I've seen they give them to everyone now it seems. It's sad.
In that case there needs to be a sign with the word Elevator and an arrow pointing to the fight mounted on the center hand rail. I am not in a wheelchair but I can not climb stairs. My keen and hip are trashed. If I was to open that door I would just shit my pants and turn and walk away. Some one needs to make and mount a sign.
That’s the International Symbol of Accessibility and is not only for people in wheelchairs. There are many other disabled people who cannot open that door without assistance but can use the stairs. There should be an elevator, wheelchair lift, or ramp somewhere else at the facility. It’s common for historical buildings.
There's an elevator to the right/left I can't remember, but remember the one who "accidentally" left it out of the video is the true walking trashbag here.
Also it should say some not just people with disabilities and have a sign telling people with a wheelchair or something like that to go use a different entrance than have a map showing how to get there or an arrow.
There are other reasons than being unable to walk that can make it hard for you to open doors. Some of my friends can walk up those stairs but can't open doors that have any wieght. Physical disability happens on a spectrum, it's not just "wheelchair yes/no". That the universal symbol for disability is a wheelchair is of course BS.
Could be government regulations requiring the door to be accessible even if it makes no sense, could be (as someone else said) that there's a lift to the side. I wouldn't necessarily rule out your version either, but in that case why put in the button?
At my highschool they put the only handicap friendly bathroom on the second floor. There was an elevator but imagine having to wait for the slow ass elevator when you really need to go. 💀
My highschool is an old building built on a hillside with complex structures so it dosen't have an elevator and the nurses office is in the fifth floor
My school has a 4 story building with no stairs no elevator. It has 7ft wide ramps. Once you get used to it, it’s so much better than stairs. And it holds the fastest evacuation record, compared to other similar sized buildings with stairs/ elevators.
@@JamoWaffleSpongethis is likely due to a newish requirement for a certain number of houses on a development to be adaptable for wheelchair users. The builder will have a house type suitable for this and use them even if the house doesn't need to be adaptable, or yours is adaptable and one of the alterations would be to install a sloped approach to the front door.

I'd like to believe that to be true but I don't know of any condition that meets this criteria. One arm, motor disfunction, arthritis, carpal tunnel, all of them can open doors as well as push buttons.
I'm terminally ill. I am slightly better now, but I was 85 pounds one time with basically no fat or muscle. Some doors were downright a struggle if not impossible. That is how weak I was. So automatic doors are definitely great. Just not these. If I can't open the freaken door you're also most likely too weak to walk up two flights of stairs! This is for someone with no arms or carrying stuff it seems.

Yah, came here to say this. The camera angles are such that you don’t see what’s to either side (“conveniently”), like possibly an elevator or side interior doors.

I am disabled and in a wheelchair, but I laughed SO HARD seeing this-because the idiots who try to make things “normal” for those of us with disabilities have absolutely NO CLUE! Organizations that get paid to advocate for us should be REQUIRED to have at least 90% of their staff also be disabled! WE know what works for us-nobody else does!
I had my accomodations removed after 22 years. I have to start over, and am getting certified in web accessibility. *all* my future customers will have their websites fully accessible. No extra cost, just because it's important.
As an able bodied person, the fact that somebody saw NOTHING wrong with STAIRS being the thing directly after the wheelchair accessible door is kind of, just, it's like a full grown adult answering 5 to 2+2, especially when wheelchair bound people are the #1 image pushed when we think of the word disabled. The only way this was installed by not a team of morons is if the door system just came with the button or if two different sets of people were in charge of making the door and the rest of the building. But even then like, aside from an able bodied person with their hands full (which even then making it up the stairs is questionable) I can't think of many situations where someone would need the button to open the doors but not be able to climb the stairs. Like, I can only think of people who don't have any arms or if it's a pull door maybe if they have a disability with their hands where they can't pull it? Either way, a very small percentage of disabled people. You'd think they'd add an elevator.
I hear you, but here's the problem: when a natural disaster happens people rarely think about anyone but themselves. So imagine a workforce of 90% disabled trynna get out of the building but being unable to due to wheelchairs taking up more space in the elevator. While 10% of able-bodied people barely help the 90%.
@Scorpion_Tail I'm an Ironworker from New Jersey. If you've been to the tri-state area, then you know that there's a lot of older buildings and structures. Especially in places like Philly. Sometimes we'll get on these jobs where you need to custome build huge parts of the project. I always enjoy those jobs because we have to rely on our craftsmanship skills as opposed to everything being pre-engineered. The point is that you hit the nail on the head by saying that sometimes they need retrofitting. I've seen some real odd attempts at trying to modernize 100 year old structures. Most of the time, it's amazing to have your hands on, but sometimes you leave the job just shaking your head. 😆

I didn’t speak about hate, sorry, if it sounded that way to you 🙏🏽, I just wanted to say that it’s very typical for certain people involved in such questionable “projects” to get away by doing something like this, and make a “facade” like this to seem to be one more useful thing for people with disabilities, when in fact if you test it, you obviously see that it’s useless. For instance, there are so many bad ramps with more than ridiculous angles in dangerous places, and they are totally of no use for both parents with prams/strollers and for people using wheelchairs. In some countries it’s about funding dishonest businessmen, who win tenders but perform them poorly and just make money. In other cases, it’s often the lack of experienced people, performing the task and yes, ignorance. Sometimes it’s just plain indifference or disregard. I believe, though, that our society is rapidly moving to genuine understanding this problem, listening to the needs of the disabled people and getting professionals involved. I’ve just been long involved in this field and I keep working and learning more to provide good service.

It’s also amazing, that more often people with disabilities are asked about their real needs and they also take part in developing new things and improving the old ones 😃
@@polinatalmeltzer450 I don't know where you live, but anywhere I've been has become increasingly disdainful of disability rights the further removed we get from the Act of 1992. People see stuff like this and start thinking they can get away with ignoring accommodations since they see everyone else getting away with it. And they're right, since the only way to stop it is to sue the offenders. Most legitimately disabled people don't have the knowledge, gumption, or financial resources to sue businesses for their flagrant, often deliberate neglect of required accommodations. Moreover, if a disabled person sues a business in order to compel access accommodations, the business will become adversarial and make the disabled person feel very unwelcome, at the least. So there is no clear solution for disabled people. Playing nice and imploring businesses to comply with existing laws normally gets nowhere since they normally know they aren't in compliance and had made the conscious choice to risk violating the ADA in order to save money (often only saving a few hundred dollars throughout the life of their business). So you can play nice and nothing ever get done, or spend time and money to sue a business that will find new ways to not let you in even if you win the lawsuit years down the road.

As someone with an invisible disability that often makes it impossible to climb stairs, I have to agree. It does deserve *some* sort of community service, confinement, heck - make them live in a wheelchair, on crutches, or canes without bring able to lift your feet very high for several weeks. No time off, or out as the case may be. Sometimes you just have to let them walk in your shoes for a while.
My dad’s a California architect, so he deals with a TON of bureaucracy and rules in architecture. He just reminded me that a lot of people - disabled or injured - have trouble opening a door (arm strength) but are capable of climbing stairs just fine. State rules would require a button there if it’s a public school. Ignore the wheelchair on the button - that’s just the standardized ‘disabled’ logo. The accessible wheelchair entrance is elsewhere.

I am one of those people. I cant just open one I have to hold onto it and fall back until my weight has opened it. I mean..it’s appreciated but its not good only being accessible to one type of disability 😂
