Today I'm talking about an interesting product I picked up a little while ago called Cell2Jack which allows me to pair my cellphone to an old rotary landline phone and make calls with it. Is this niche product just a cool party trick or something you'd actually get use from? Let me know in the comments!

I'm an old-school type who still gets Internet via a land-line for my Desktop PC. I've never had a cellphone, yet I was an Alpha-tester of ARPANET in Oct 1969 when they brought a Telex machine to our High school here in Vancouver ,BC & we sent an 'e-mail' to SFU using a hand-set of a phone hooked up to an acoustic modem. Cheers

So cool. I got it working! An old rotary i got at a yard sale years/decades ago and wanted to get a landline but too pricey. Got the cello jack working great. Dialing the rotary brought me right back to childhood and how irritating having 9’s and 0’s in number were-having to wait for the rotary to go all the way. Ha. Now I need to get the ringer working. Thanks for your walk thru at the end.

and with AI surely you could request the number you want, as it was, before dial phones. When I was a kid, that's exactly what it was, a phone. You picked it up, someone responded and then you gave the number you wanted to call.

I have five phone Jack's in my home that was built in 1992. Each jack is partnered to a ROTARY phone (not push-button). My oldest is from 1927, and the newest is a pre-war (WW2) Western Electric Model 302 with a metal body. I've had them all refurbished and they work perfectly. I only use my cell for texts.

loved this hehe ... i love using tech to escape tech.. i am also trying to UnPlug yet stay connected.. great vid just subscribed and cant wait to watch more here is a little story "memory" for you that you might like.. i remember being allot younger in the days of just rotary dial phones ( the days when even if your friend had a Push Button phone they were RICH hahah) -anyhow.. we used to listen to the local radio station's TOP TEN music count down and then when it was all done you could call in to with a chance to with a prize if you were the " X" caller... ( whatever number of callers they said.) and OFTEN they would say " To the FIRST CALLER who got ALL the songs right! " and we would be listening and waiting .. and what we would do ( so funny) but we would dial ALL the numbers but then before you let the last number dial through , we would put a cloths pin on the dial pad so to HOLD it until you wanted it to go through so to try and get to be the first ! haha so funny.. ( i won once !! - i won a box of Frozen Fudgsicle's " lol thanks for the vid and for helping me dial up and old but great memory!

I use a Northern Telecom Model 500 like yours on my voip line, which is not compatible with pulse dialing, so I purchased a little device called a Rotatone from a Canadian company called Old Phone Works, which dials a DTMF tone after you dial a number on the rotary dial, so you can use it on any modern line. It was very expensive though, and I needed full access to my analog telephone adapter to adjust the voltages to ensure proper operation, but once it's all running, everything works perfectly.

Very cool, sounds like a serious setup you have! I never grew up with a rotary phone so I can’t be 100% certain the functionality is exactly as it was when they were most common, but my experience will the Cell2Jack has been I’ve been able to dial using the rotary function and make and receive calls with this phone. Thanks for the comment!

@@spencers-adventures the fun part is the rotary dialing (although we hated it after trying touch tone at our friends' houses back in the days) and the beautiful ring, fully mechanical. If you get those two with your Cell2Jack, you've got a pretty decent experience!

I've had a couple of devices like this in the past that allowed me to interface cellphones to landlines. They were a bit buggy so when I lost my last one in a flood 7 years ago, I didn't replace it. I was able to connect them into the actual phone wiring in my house, so I could just plug landline phones into the wall jacks and they would make and receive calls through my cellphones. I even had a wall mounted phone in my kitchen. Like the best of both worlds. I now have a bluetooth cordless phone system and it works pretty well. I pair the cellphones to the base station and put wireless handsets around the house so I don't have to have my cellphone with me at all times and don't have to remember where I left it when it rings. I don't want to be constantly checking my phone and this technology makes it possible. Ever tried connecting the Cell2Jack into house wiring?

@spencers-adventures 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the subscription! I’m not sure how the back end of it works, but yeah the little box it powered via an included micro USB to USB-A cable which you can use on any usb wall plug to power the device. The rotary phone gets it’s power from the Cell2Jack and if you want there is a USB-A on the Cell2Jack to charge your cellphone too. It’s a pretty cool device!
@smarmar400
@smarmar400 5 месяцев назад
I'm also curious about the sound quality. My biggest complaint about modern cell phones is that the "phone" part of a smart device seems to be the part most neglected. Growing up in the rotary phone era and the enjoyable, crystal-clear quality of phone calls, I now loath using my smart device for phone calls because the sound quality is so poor and the device against my ear can be painful after several minutes. And don't get me started on speaker phone quality!

@spencers-adventures
@spencers-adventures 5 месяцев назад
It will automatically start pairing as soon as you plug it in, but if for some reason it doesn’t, you dial 0000 and it will start pairing. The audio quality is pretty good. It’s basically the cellphone quality just though whatever speaker is in the phone, so mileage may vary depending on what phone you’re using. You can tweak the settings through the desktop app to adjust for volume of mic and speaker etc. I’m happy with mine!

Whilst I agree that we need to somewhat disconnect from the digital devices in our pockets etc, as an educator of a wide variety of age groups, I can tell you right now that the reason so many of the Boomer generation and their Silent Generation parents have below average (sub-100) IQ's is because they grew up in a world that kept them in this VERY very tightly controlled technology and news bubble. The vast majority of people over the age of 60 today have never been able to speak candidly with any level of intellectual authority on topics such as local politics, the environment, science or maths or basic socioeconomic matters. Save for a few exceptions to the rule where you find a brilliantly interesting and clever old-timer, most of their peers have never been able to keep up with them in the slightest... What I can also tell you is that the mainstream media would LOVE to see a world where the proletariat become disconnected from technology and just talk among themselves based on heresay, as that is the world they know EXACTLY how to control, as it's the world they once flawlessly controlled before the advent of the internet.
@BlueGreenEyedSoulSis
@BlueGreenEyedSoulSis 2 месяца назад
I'm one of those you speak of (60 and up) and can tell you it has nothing to do with the internet, or age for that matter. It has everything to do with mindset. Since I was young I've had the attitude of learning (because I needed to) and humility (because I don't know everything). Too many of all ages above 4 or so years fear "looking stupid" and become what they fear. The best thing for our brains is NOT filling them with alot of facts to impress others, but to use knowledge to discuss ideas and therefore develop wisdom. Don't forget: Knowledge does not equal wisdom.
