I was a kid in the 60"s when these guys were popular. They racked up several top ten hits in just a few years and it seems radio decided to turn them off. Too bad because their music is still very enjoyable to listen to.
Apparently, Gary Lewis was drafted to the US army in 1967 but resumed the band upon his discharge in 1968. In 1970 the band disbanded but Gary Lewis reformed it shortly thereafter and continues to tour and perform to this day. They were second only to the Lovin' Spoonful in the 1960s in have the most top 10 records in the US. Why radio stations stopped playing any new recordings after the 1960s no one knows for sure.
@@rogerspencer Both GL & the Playboys and Lovin' Spoonful had their first seven singles reach the Top 10, including #1s. They were the only two bands in the 60s with that distinction.
I live in Louisville Kentucky, l cross the river , in I believe 1973, to watch Gary Lewis. Add a place called the garage. In Indiana, Small place only about a hundred people. He was great, and funny too. He got hot, and he said don't this damn place have an air conditioner. Everyone of us died laughing. We were sweating our asses off. And we weren't even performing. Great times though.
I'm 70 today I think the radio station has a lot of modern music they think sells Even Elvis lost his popularity after he was married and came back from the draft For those who liked Gary enjoy it I liked Jerry Lewis too
Leon Russell did the arrangements in the studio and Ron Hicklin, studio session singer actually sang on all of their songs. Tommy Tedesco Latin guitar riffs, Jim Keltner drums and Russell Bridges (Leon Russell) on keyboards
I love this music, Gary Lewis was/is a great talent It’s always annoying to me when performers lip sync plus the fact the electric guitars aren’t even plugged in!
@@connorbliss8669 From what I understand this entire episode is in the public domain now, however, copyright restrictions can be applied. My video here has a copyright claim for the songs so that revenue from ads running during the playing of the video goes to the copyright holder.
Gary has the dad’s gawkiness. He’s long and lean like him and his mom’s face. On the music side, Gary and the Playboys were NOT playing live at all. They were lip syncing.
It was common practice for singers to pre-record and in actual performance it was lip-synced against that recording. This was done for various reasons - research internet for why!
@@Emilia-tx3zwJames Brown has been on the Mike Douglas show many times and NEVER once lip synced a performance. Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, the 4 Tops, the Miracles, Temptations all performed live so that’s not necessarily true. However, Jackson 5, and Eddie Kendricks lip synced on the Mike Douglas show so i guess it depends on the artist.
Lip sync back then was so un real..no mic's.....no amp's or plug in cord from guitars...hard to be on TV back then to promote your music when you couldn't even play it
They NEVER did a LIVE performance on ANY show because they couldn't recreate the studio sound on their recordings... Thus.... They lip-synced EVERYTHING and the band didn't even play their instruments... Phonies! I was so disappointed in them when I found out these FACTS!
Who the hell was still using an accordian after the Beatles arrived ? The Band did at the end of the 60s and maybe Nils Lofgren, but it was so out of date by then.
Love the music but every TV appearance shows an accordion player who is never heard. Studio recording that is played includes piano, organ, additional percussion that is never on stage.
