Question...it wasn't in the video, but did you use the de-shedding nozzle to get out some of the undercoat while getting his bath if not, why not?? Is it because he's so big??
Hi! The de-shedding nozzle is hooked up in my bathtub, and Thunder is far too large for that. The water pressure in my shower isn't strong enough for that nozzle to work.
@@girlwiththedogs212 another related question: do you ever literally "bathe" dogs? As in put them in a tub of warm water? I would have thought it would help the water to reach the skin rather than shower them but maybe it is too dangerous? I have so much respect for all the hard work you do and your knowledge of and love for animals! 🐾
I used to be a forestry tech in BC and had a Bernese as my forestry dog. If I walked 20 miles a day, he did 40 or 60, roughly. He was so fit I could pick him up on 1 arm, rigid like a board. The advantage of having a Bernese is that they are glued to their owners and don't wander off. The disadvantage was the fur. Mine carried packs and pulled a toboggan, knew 27 commands, and would search for snow in the mountains to roll in, even in June. One time, the temperature was -40C and I was driving my pickup down the highway at 100 km/hr, and the dog had his head out the side of the truck box, and he was smiling. How much frost is that? But wow, the grooming! Talk about fur, I bet the birds of BC made a lot of nests from his cast-offs. Bernese nowadays, don't live for too long. Line breeding has shortened their lives, and the bond between dog and owner is so deep and intense that I weep as I type this, because the grief never really ended. To have a dog who was with me 24/7/365 and then gone, well, that's a big hole in a lonely man's life. Absolutely, the best friend a man could have. They look like big balls of fur but they are resilient and tough, will work themselves to death for you so you have to be aware of this. Don't ever give a Bernese Mountain dog a job that is beyond his abilities to do, he'll die trying, just to please you.
It's a terrible thing to put a dog down. I used to do dog fostering and rescue. I kept the two dogs that were both unadoptable, and needed me, and I needed them. Each one lived 14 years since their adoption, made it to 16. When I had to put them down, that ended my desire to have dogs. Such a terrible to have to do. I can't do that again.
I can't afford to get my Yorkie groomed, so I learned how to groom him myself. I've been battling depression for a while and as a result, his grooming has been neglected for almost 2 months. I came across your videos today and have been binge watching them. Watching you care for the animals has helped inspire me to ignore the depression long enough to care for my dog. Today I got his eye boogers cleaned, I got his paw pads shaved, his nails clipped, his sanitary done and I gave him a bath. I would have done all of his groom, but I have physical limitations that prevent me from getting all the grooming done in one day, but I'm going to finish his groom tomorrow. On behalf of Yogi Bear and myself, I would like to say thank you, so very much, for being a light in my darkness.
You did an amazing amount of work what with having both depression and health limitations. I'm sure Yogi Bear appreciated your efforts. I know when I went through a bad bout of depression after my dad died in 2009, sometimes cleaning the kitty litter box and taking it to the trash can was a major accomplishment. I also had just been recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was so grateful I had my 2 kitties. Those fellas kept me alive through that period. I lost them both in 2014, and I still miss them terribly. Even with another kitty.
My Berners ALWAYS sat on people's feet and leaned into them as much as possible to get the maximum amount of pets 😂 Its always delightful to see one on your channel!
my girl is 7months old and thinks she‘s a lapdog… sitting on feet and leaning on us is frequent and appreciated… not sure about her full body cuddle attempts on the sofa though… we are working on pawing - not pawing my face that is 😅 they just are huge cuddle bugs, aren‘t they? 🥰
My labradane loki purposely sits on my everyone's feet. I take him to the dog park and hes like "oh dogs.... meh" "PEOPLE" and sits on their feet till he gets thoroughly fussed with then he moves to the next person so they get a turn lol
I worked at a dog daycare and we had one that would stop and try to lean on you if you're walking. My nickname for him was roadblock, he caused many a stumble.
@@yaritzamiranda921 so am I. Hes the biggest 125lb love bug I've ever met. Some dogs want doses of attention but hes a bottomless pit. I actually have 2. Balto is more lanky at 1yo and I'd be suprised if he ever reaches 100lb
Never in a million years would I have thought "let me fire up the you tuber and throw some animal grooming videos" but here we are and I love watching your adventures in daily life and loving the hell out of it lol.
It always melts my heart to see the dogs who are clearly not enjoying the grooming, but just as obviously trust you and do their best to be good while you work. Such sweethearts! ❤
Thunder’s spa time is a full-time job. He was really a good boi, not a single whimper or sign of distress. He is a very handsome hound whose family is so lucky to have him. Wouldn’t want the kibble bill but that lovable hunk of Berner is a fine example of how rescues can adjust to a new normal when pawrents take the time to introduce them to a brand new world of love.
I've got a Bernedoodle, and believe it or not, they're actually really smart pups. Even so, they do appear to be thinking absolutely nothing most of the time. lol In my opinion, a Berner/Bernedoodle's personality is basically like a person who's an academic genius, but has zero common sense.
@@crystalpreuett9539 poodles have a lot going on in their heads of course your Bernadoodle has a lot going on. A lot of Bernese are smart, but a lot also are dopey.
We had 2 Bernese, over a period of 12 years.. both adopted and sadly both passed away from cancer.. best dogs I ever had. Loved them so much.. we had them groomed , one we used a mobile groomer, her was only 85 pounds.. the other was 120 pounds so we took him to a wonderful groomer.. I really enjoyed watching this video!
@@lisalawn1111 with how saturated the field is I wouldn't be so sure. People will happily change groomers the moment a price increase hits. The life if a groomer.
@@lisalawn1111 Maybe like my hair stylist (also owner of salon) she wants to be fair to herself but also stay affordable for long time clients. My stylist also quietly gives big discounts to those on sml budgets. He still does really well and has products but keeps markup sml.
@@janeenharris3074 Everything costs more in Australia though. I bet the Cost of Living would make living there worse even with a commiserate increase in pay.
I had a Saint Bernard when I was a kid and we groomed her in the nearby woods in spring because of the enormous amounts of fur we needed to comb out. Birds would gather her fur for their nests we saw. A double win!
I really appreciate that you put the time and cost in the video, people need to take these things into account when they are thinking of getting a dog. You did a beautiful job on this big boy
Yeah, I see **WAY** too many videos of groomers that do free grooms because they feel sorry for the dogs, where the owners never get the dog groomed, and they wait until the dog looks like it is covered in dreadlocks.
He's just totally resigned to the fact that you'll have your way with him, so he's just standing there for you. Lovely dog. Well done video as always Vanessa.
I picked up an undercoat rake for my Berner to help keep up with his coat between grooms (he goes every 8 weeks). GAME CHANGER. Every time I use it, we get a huge mound of fur. I love it when you showcase the fluffy dogs on your channel. Thank you, Vanessa!
My sister got a Bernese Mountain dog owner to bring her dog to the park last week since she was away and I can't really go with him. When they came back I opened the door and nearly fell backwards. Their dog was HUGE haha He literally looked like a bear! We used to have a boxer but there's no point of comparison. He was in another league. You're a champ for grooming this boy!
What a gorgeous and compliant fellow! Love the longer version. There is always a sense of disappointment when the short versions end - we have too little time to properly look at the beautiful animals. Many, many thanks for this. We grew up in South Africa in 1940s and ‘50s; had never heard of dog groomers; ours was a Rhodesian Ridgeback (or we were his); keeping him clean was a family affair: Huge tin bath on the lawn filled with warm water; great fun had by all. When he shook himself afterwards, we had our showers for the day.
Please please please do a collab with Molly Burke and her new guide dog named Elton John!!🙏🏼 It’s her first time having a long haired dog and she’s getting the brushing and grooming stuff all figured out and I think everyone would love to see you groom him. I love both of you guys’ channels, I think you’d both have a blast (she’s also from Canada!) 😊😊
Bernese are the best. I grew up with one. And the leaning into you is very relatable. Mom used to brush out his coat as much as she could, but he was still lethargic in summer. Even tried to lay very quietly in a corner to skip a walk sometimes. I love how you can see Thunder trying to lean into the blowdrier a bit. And I love how most Bernese, even if they don't like something, never get aggressive. They'll try to pull away, but not get mouthy. It's hard work keeping that entire cuddlebug body off the ground. Of course he gets tired.
I’ve learned so much about undercoats, thank you! The dogs with undercoats definitely need a lot of coat care to treat them humanely. My parents always refused to get a dog that shedded. With 4 kids, 2 dogs (poodle&fox terrier), 2 gerbils, 2 rabbits and a tank full of African frogs, there were plenty of animals that needed care.
Eh it depends I had a dog with undercoat, may she rest in peace, and it basically needed zero maintenance because she blew it out by herself. I bathed her maybe once a year or twice a year if that for like 10 years of her life and 8 or more years was at home in a tub without any high velocity dryer. Mild combing on her butt fluff was all that was needed when she got to be 10+ years old. Many Livestock Guardian Dogs have proper undercoat and basically are never groomed and everything takes care of itself. A LOT of it is genetics and breeding for good undercoat that maintains itself.
Also should mention my dog was stayed and never really suffered from spay coat. Though, she was adopted so idk how her coat was the first 3 years of life which were spent intact running the street having babies.
This dog is lucky to have you work on him because I feel you offer a lot of care and understanding for dogs like him who are giants! Beautiful work you did for him and he was such a good dog from what you showed us. Definitely a lot more chilled than some of the dogs you get.
The leaning is their way of communing with you. I loved that about our dog and it was actually why we bought our Bernese, along with his gentle nature and beautiful coat.
One of the funniest parts of these videos is you managing dogs so much bigger than you! Whether they just don’t know how big they are or if they’re deliberately being difficult, your awesome handling of them always wins out. But it’s still hilarious to watch!
It’s really awesome to see how much you care about each individual baby. I know it’s not easy, but you get a lot of love back from the animals and that has to feel good!!
He seemed really well behaved for the drier this time. Does he make the connection between grooming and feeling cooler and more comfortable now, do you think?
I absolutely *love* how you correct yourself or point out mistakes you made. You are super genuine, not trying to be some perfect person, and it makes you so so so much more likeable. I love this new channel! Please give us that grinch feet moment always, the saying and the action just make myday. More than any other cut, that chaotic fluff nice and tidy.
I have a bit of a different question: How do you take care of your own skin? Do the water and different products leave your hands and arms dry after a while?
I'm not Vanessa obviously but I am also a professional groomer and was a bather before that (bathed/blowdried all the dogs for the other groomers). I find personally the more harsh shampoos like clarifying shampoos or deep cleaning ones are very hard on the skin and if i need to wash multiple dogs in them per day my skin dries out. My hands and up my arms get dry rashes. Moisturizing creams throughout the day helps. We also just recently got special gloves to help protect our hands
I've seen some negative comments elsewhere about the Equigrooming being too sharp or "it's basically razors" so people return it immediately. Would you consider doing a video on how to properly use the Equigroomer at home, maybe also how to properly use an undercoat rake? I had a collie years ago and my groomer was nice enough to show me how. 😅
imagining shaving with your own skin, with razors you have to be gentle or else you’ll knick yourself. i think people are wayyy to rough with the equigroomer so they cut and slice their dog all over. it’s not the fault of the tool per se, but the person handling it not connecting common sense to the tool
I bought the Equigroomer, and I was fascinated by how simple a concept it is! It baffles me that people can't figure out how it's supposed to work. It's not a brush, it's a saw blade... If you run it gently over the coat, the sharp edges will grip any undercoat which has fallen free of the skin, and leave the rest. Genius in its simplicity.
I have tried the furminator and the equigroomer on my cats and my mom’s terrier. I found the equigroomer to be much more easy to use. It’s like the older loop type shedding blades, but offers me more control on a smaller animal.
I was hoping she was going to use the whitening shampoo on his neck/ chest area. It’s so satisfying when she uses the Whitening and the coat sparkles ❤
He's adorable!!! Such a good looking groom too! We used to have a Newfie and omg the hair! It takes a lot of time and attention to grooming for these guys but they are SO worth it!
He's being such a good boy this time. I think he's clued in that he feels lighter after letting you work your magic on him. Do big dogs like Thunder ever decide that, "nope, groom is done now, now it's time to snuggle? "
It’s great to see such amazing & professional work. You’ve mentioned in other videos how your grooming salon is set up for the animals’ comfort. I really appreciated that.
He looks more gorgeous every minute in the second part. They both worked so hard, the dog and the groomer, it is eshausting indeed. You both did so well.
My wife and I fell in love with your channel several months ago and watch everything you put out. While watching this vid I wondered what you do with all the fur you gather from all the puppers/Catos.
We used to have BMD when growing up, these dogs are the defenition of chill. But gosh, the hair, we would brush ours with three people at the same time, and sometimes even vacuum the dog. She loved it and came running, both for the brush as for the vacuum cleaner 😂
Wow, that definitely is a Thunder if I ever saw one. Love that big vacant smile lmao. Beautiful dog and I’m loving this more in-depth channel already! 🖤🧡
Such a lovely floofmeister! And a very good boi. If I had to spend that long at the doctor I know I would not be that calm. You have a lovely rapport and talent with your clients.
