Central Asian Shephers have their ears and tails cropped to protect them from being torn off by predators. It's very rare to see an un-cropped CAS, as most people do not own them unless they are being worked as guardians. Whatever your stance on the matter, this is purely an explanation of why they are cropped, not whether or not it's ethical.

It's amazing how genetically healthy old working breeds of dogs are. In my home country Iran, we have a huge native shepherd breed called Sarabi, which can easily live up to 16-17 years old. I wish more and more breeders focused on health of the dogs and strived to revive the classical look of the working breeds, such as German shepherd, chow chow, bulldog, etc, which were all much healthier than their contemporary counterparts.

@y_fam_goeglyd
@y_fam_goeglyd Год назад
It is so nice to hear about breeds that never normally get mentioned. I have a huge soft spot for working breeds, especially if they're allowed to work! I'm going to look your breed up in a minute. :) I have had greyhounds for over 30 years. Most were racers before I got them. They're a very misunderstood breed. The last time I checked the world record age for one, it was about 17½ years. I've had them up to 14 but then lost them to illness, though our first two went to separate, freak accidents. One badly broke her hind leg after turning in a ploughed field to chase a rabbit - still on the leash! Unfortunately, she had arthritis in her hips and shoulders and taking off the leg - it was unfixable - was not an option. She was my soul dog, but her eyes told me she was ready to go because of the pain. It was nearly 30 years ago and thinking of that moment has just reduced me to a sobbing wreck. She was 13, our others were 12-14. Okay, taken a deep breath! Generally speaking, they're actually really genetically healthy for a pedigree dog. They've been around for thousands of years with only a little bit of interference back in the early Middle Ages, to make them a bit stronger for hunting deer. Even now, some are very slender and petite while others are wider and more muscular. Our two fastest ever dogs (based on their racing records) were the slender type. We still have one of them now. He'll be our last dog as both my husband and I are physically disabled and getting worse over time. Fortunately, Buddy is really good at walking next to a mobility scooter! People don't realise how heavy they are! Anything between about 33-38 kg, even a bit more. "Racing weight" can be seen when they stand up. If you can see the last three ribs at the back, they're there. They shouldn't be any thinner - nor fatter if they're working. House dogs, i.e. when they retire, spend their lives on their own sofas. You might not have bought them one, but you'll get kicked off the most comfortable one 🤣. (I know of dogs who "retired themselves", including the brother of my other fast one, who decided to trot out of the trap in his final race - his retirement was already being planned - and while the race went on he jogged a lap of honour! 😂 Went to live with a vet above a fish & chip shop. A very happy boy!) Sorry, I'm talking about my favourite subject (maybe my second favourite, but I won't start on my grandchildren!), I get carried away. I'm going to do an image search on the Sarabi! Thanks for introducing them to me!

Wow! How gorgeous they are! I was scrolling down thinking they looked a bit like a mastiff and one was titled the Sarabi Mastiff. You're so lucky to have such a stunning dog virtually to yourselves! When I was a teenager our family had a very kind and gentle central asian shepherd named Misha. She was a beautiful and majestic white-coated dog with small black dots all over her body. My father took great care of her and trained her responsibly. The problem with CAS is that they are not city dogs and require a lot of space for them to be able to roam freely. Also, they could be aggressive to any other dogs (if not trained and socialized in time) because they were bred specifically to fight wolves and other threats to their herd or family members. Unfortunately, Misha was presumably poisoned by our family ill-wishers when we were away from home (yeah, this is how some people in Russia think "righteous vengeance" should look like). When we returned home after our 2-day trip, she was still alive but barely moving. It was too late for the veterinarian to do anything. She crawled out of her kennel as if she wanted to say good-bye. The dog died on our hands. She was an innocent sweet baby. Never touched a human or another animal. And got murdered by people with a bandit mentality. I will never forget you, Misha.

😯ALABAY! 😯 Now that's the dog I can see every day, there's one man in our living district who owns an Alabay girl, though, not cropped, that is with ears and tail. And there's TONS of those in Kazakhstan, where they are still used as livestock guardian. That's actually why his ears and tail are cropped, so it would've been less vulnerabilities that a wolf could grab onto. These dogs are amongst the strongest and toughest dogs in the world, their endurance is simply phenomenal, they are able to chase a car for several kilometers. Compared to Caucasian Shepherds, Alabays aren't as aggressive. Loki here is still small boi, he's going to get even bigger and stronger than he is now (up to 80 killos as a maximum, or... 190 ibs), though, he's so well socialized already, good job to the owner. I have a mixed breed Anatolian Shepherd who was rescued as a stray from Turkey. Antolians have similar origins to the central Asian Shepherd and date back to the Bronze Age. Although these breeds guard property/and or flocks instinctually, they generally have very steady temperaments and use barking as their primary deterrent. They almost never resort to attacking unless they feel it is absolutely necessary. They judge situations extremely well.
@janefreda7034
@janefreda7034 Год назад
@GirlWithTheDogs Anatolian Shepherds generally have wonderful temperaments and I highly recommend them, especially to someone like you with tons of experience. They are calm, loyal, gentle giants. My mixed rescue Anatolian has zero prey drive and although he "guards" property very well, out of the yard he is extremely sociable with other dogs and good with people. I got mine from a rescue out of Turkey but I know there's US based rescues for the breed.

here in N.C., where many farms exist, I see Great Pyrenees, Anatolians and other working dogs abandoned or in shelters. I'm thinking people get them for the wrong reasons, don't train them or make efforts to socialize them as needed --- then discard them. Which gives t hem LESS of a chance to be adopted since not enough effort was put into socializing or training them. Such a shame. Lovely dogs if socialized.

This is very much not natural, they were surgically removed. While this is done for some working-type dogs so they don't get injured. But it's also done for cosmetic reasons on occasion, which is the biggest bs (and illegal in many countries as animal abuse except in medical cases). Without knowing what Loki does, i.e. if he is legitimately working, hard to determine if it's justified.
