This is actually a common issue that a lot of “meme artists” go through, same shit happened with Ugly God. First you’re having fun and doing you, you then blow up and realise “shit I hate college/my job and I could actually make a career out of this” and then start making music 100% of the time. During this period you have the most creativity, the most fun, the most freedom, you enjoy your niche fame and goof around online e.g. post viral tweets/retweets. Then comes the day you “blow up”, for some it can be XXL and for others it can be the first album. Then you have to worry about sales, remix’s(labels push these even if you don’t want to because it gives you exposure and potential for another hit), press tours, you have to start deleting past tweets and acting and dressing a certain way, your “forced” to go on insanely long tour runs, your label decides when you release music or if you’re independent your fans pressure you to release music 24/7 which stresses you out, gives you anxiety and fucks up with your artistic process up until the point where making music isn’t fun anymore. Basically Doja is saying “ayo this was fun but it isn’t fun anymore”, matter a fact that’s how fame is in reality. I think if a lot of us were to be famous it would be fun in the beginning but just get extremely stressful overtime. Imagine having to always make sure you don’t say something stupid in an interview(basically you’re going to have to overthink every word you say)or post something “controversial” or even look crusty/react to things badly in public because paparazzi is everywhere. Or having to watch your back because your a constant target to criminals…like that must be tiring asf

Exactly… capitalizing art and music to this extreme completely defeats the purpose of it. it’s so sad to see my favorite artist be drained by the industry. i can tell she’s not doing well because of her appearances changes and she’s not on Instagram lives as much. i know what stress and depression looks like cause i deal with it myself. i hope she can get better management bc i value her so much as an artist & she shouldn’t be taken advantage of like this.

I caught up with her outside and asked her for a Polaroid and afterwards, I asked for a photo with her and she said something like “yeah, I don’t mind, I’m not that famous yet”. Only a few artists in this generation do that Lorde, Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean and Beyoncé. You need to leave the madness, live your life, get some new genuine experiences to write about, record it. Not just for new material, but for your mental health as well. Usually only the unique and the talented can afford to do that tho. The mediocre get replaced easily.

Been listening to Doja since her purr album back in 2014, I miss her old stuff she’s an incredible artist as she can produce her own beats and writes her own lyrics, even her lowkey songs on SoundCloud that never blow up she’s made herself you can tell she has fun with and enjoys. Her new songs and album is fire but I can tell she’s trying to ride the tik tok wave or at least being forced to. I hope she gets back to her old roots I’m sure it’s hard dealing with all the pressure and press. Whatever she puts out is gold but I wish she would get back to making her own songs in her room like she used to on Instagram live back in 2015. Love Doja forever💜

I'm glad she's speaking on this. It's so crazy to be on the internet and see people talk about their favorite artists and begging for more content from them instead of being happy with what's currently out or at least expanding themselves to similar people. I went into a pipeline towards artists like Tyler, Brockhampton, Mac Miler, Lil Nas x, Doja Cat, and SZA all because Kendrick hasn't released an album in nearly 5 years. You shouldn't want more from someone when they aren't ready and cause them to hate what they should love doing.

I get it that the industry can be exhausting on your motivation to make music, or being under contracts that slave away you’re creative process. But that’s something for an artist to use to their advantage to find a another way to make something new under their own name, not labels. To me she’s venting into a empty void when she’s already established her self as a great artist. Use that to your advantage and come back stronger, some people would kill to be in her current position so it does come off a little selfish in a bad way.

Whoever manages her is just pushing her to stay in the spotlight and make her a household name because stars come and go. I feel bad for her situation but at the same time look at somebody like Zach fox in terms of music, he’s just making stuff with nobody forcing him to make it so he gets to enjoy the craft as a independent. So I don't want to invalidate what Doja says here because it's real. But at the same time, I can understand why people have a hard time empathizing with this kind of thing from successful artists. From a purely self-centered perspective, I have a full time job that comes with the sort of frustrations she describes (losing days to things I don't want to do, my work having taken years to develop but losing my passion over time, and interpersonal conflicts around work and compensation), but on top of my job I make music and try to promote it on my own, purely out of passion. I have no doubt I'm not alone in this, and for a lot of us a day where we get an hour or two to spend making music is a good day. I understand that Doja may not like deadlines or having to attend interviews as an artist, but she needs to remember that lots of her fans spend 40 hours or more a week doing something they don't want to do just to get by. So while what she says is totally legitimate, I can also empathize with people who don't see things her way.

it irks me to hear that people actually thought doja was "ungrateful" for speaking her mind on these issues, which are VERY UNREASONABLE problems in the music industry. people who are a part of the music industry are MUSICIANS, it doesn't matter how popular they are or how big of a face they become, and what doja is saying reflects this. why do musicians have to go and do interviews? why do musicians have to be in photo shoots, or end up on the front of a magazine? why do musicians have to show up in other forms of media that may not be relevant to their platform? its not a discussion about "not wanting to do the work" or "she's just ungrateful," these are all major issues that exist within the industry that exist simply because so-called "managers" are utilizing their roster of artists to create a 'money tree' for themselves, and is why many people nowadays are trying to convince upcoming artists to stay independent.

I feel her. All of this image making for the artist to sell can really take a toll on their love for the work (not music); not to mention the inspiration as well. Gratefulness can’t really be measured when you’re in the position of already accepting the opportunity. I mean-she definitely puts in the work, and deals with the pressure of forming an image vs. doing what she loves most. When she has a problem with that, it doesn’t mean she’s ungrateful-it means that she has concern for what’s truly in her heart. She’s only ungrateful because she doesn’t wanna do all of that extra stuff, but what she got signed to do and to just live her life.

Big respect for speaking out like that, knowing full well it will get negative responses, being Called nasty things like being ungrateful. It’s something that needs to be adressed more, that pressure on artists to deliver something isn’t doing anyone good, well the label probably does. Also, wtf is this being ungrateful? To what or to whom? Label? Because they signed her, helped with getting her music out, fronted her money to get started ? That label is earning money off of that, profits now she’s mainstream, it’s two ways! If she has one of those 360 deals they make a shit ton of money. So addressing she feels overworked, having to deliver something she can’t fully get behind but contract says that new music has to be given at X date, nothing about the quality (not that her music is shit or anything but I mean it might have been better even if she could do it at her pace, until she is satisfied. (Reasonable offcourse) ) off it. What if a next album is made at her pace, free to record what she thinks is her best and actually enjoys making it again. That would result in a good album which might make it sell double than what it does currently, landing at more important sources that leads to more fame, requests for features, shows etc. The label profits off of that big time too. Ungrateful to fans? Because what? They put her there and now has to sit up and fetch on their whim? Idk but that’s not what I would want for an artist I like. I mean, who is interested in seeing interviews or shows/performances where she doesn’t feel like it and sense the frustration, know she doesn’t want to be there and hastily getting through it. Nah, I’d like an artist that is passionate about what he/she does, almost tangible , heart and soul in the music. I wouldn’t mind waiting longer for a release.

blacky... appreciate your empathy on this subject bc it is serious. the element that doja is tripping on is a result of 40 something predatory record executives taking advantage. a 17 year old dreams about getting signed...like gimme a pen already...like sign a blank sheet of paper. and BAM... now she owes Dr. Luke six albums at 60 percent take home before she even has the option to buy her rights back at a figure "to be determined subject to future sales and royalties. she has made 3 studio albums 32 singles and 25 videos in 9 years. halfway there to being free and rich old men getting creative writing cred for every song even though they were elsewhere getting other barely 18 artists high on God knows what, just signing ke$ha after ke$ha. what's unfortunate is Doja cat is not a prime example but a heartbreaking exception. because once in a while, amidst the drones young would-be's, there comes along an epic raw talent like doja who will shine but how bright could she have? six albums will wipe out the spirit she so naturally was gifted with. she is halfway there and will be 35 ish by the time she is free. so... she owns every ounce of her frustration. maybe if we stick by her, she wont give up. keep putting it out there. awareness and support.

Some of my favourite musicians quit because they were just treated like moneybags and their fans being taken for granted by selling them low quality products for 100 of Euros. So yeah I understand it. Choose your Agent and Team wisely

I sympathize with her, but I can't bring myself to care. How many of us work jobs we hate, and wish that we could just pursue our passions? Why is she special? Because of her follower count?

Shit is mad unfortunate. Not every artist has the mental to handle being on top of the industry. Often the happiest musicians are the ones with a smaller audience

I think someone forgets that the only difference between us and celebrities are our paid grade. We all work at jobs that suck us dry because of job politics by the boss and the only thing we can do is keep our heads down low, do your job and go home. When it comes to musician sometimes they forget to draw the lane between their job and the home life. You never give yourself completely to you work because there are always more work to do in the morning. Draw the line and set you limits when it comes down to the job.

I’m honestly surprised that we didn’t realize this a long time ago. Remember that situation with lil xan talking about how he couldn’t control his track list? Or him going on that rant about how he couldn’t control his bank account or drive his car? Or how his manager took his phone on that insta live when he wanted to let people know about a difficult situation in his family life? Listen, I get that 85% of his music is complete shit, but we already had these signs coming. Luckily, he’s doing better now, and he has more control. He’s off drugs and taking more control. Same with yk osiris and everyone else who’s spoke up about this. As for doja, proud of her for continuing this awareness. Hope she finds peace in the future.

At first i was lowkey thinking that she was just being ungrateful but at the same time, everyone has the right to speak their mind. I know she is grateful for the amount of exposure her label and the music industry itself has given her to thrive, but at the same time its also a double edged sword. Getting in the limelight is very hard when your starting out, but when you do, you slowly begin to reevaluate if what your doing is out of fun or necessity.

idk these artists complaining about the fact they have to work is starting to get real old. what you expect when you make millions you think they just gonna give you that and let you do a show once in a while? you signed a contract, honor that contract then move on like the rest of the world. these celebs want to be treated like everyone else but complain about the fact they gotta work. ive done 12 hour days 6 days a week for the last decade just to keep the lights on and food on the table. dont get it twisted these people arnt slaves to their contract, they are employees to the label just like everyone else that works there...

The record deal articulates far more than making music. That’s what independence is. Once you sign there are deadlines, promo and various obligations others than making music.

This is a sympton of signing with a record label. It’s pretty well documented. It sucks but it is literally what she signed up for. She doesnt really get to make decisions. She owes her record label money and must produce, produce, produce.

That's because they're required to mostly put a facade and show how great of a life they have, but in reality a lot of them are literally slaves. Record companies and the music industry is modern slavery. Artists have been talking about this for ages, actually. And it's the industry that makes it so people outside only see the money, the fame, the "wild life" and disregard completely when artists complain about their reality.

This is especially offensive with kpop labels. Good on you for speaking truth. Don't feel pressured if you don't want to. Someone's gotta tell these producers and labels that they're bullshit. Btw, best song will always be the I'm a cow bitch song.
