Shop teacher calling his student a "Little Chiseler" is like me writing "What a little percussionist!" On the kid's music report card when they can't match pitch 😂
So I have dyslexia and like the end of it did kinda piss me off but what pisses me off more is that Bob has dyslexia and if my memory serves me right, Bob is treated like an idiot the rest of series which I find even more offensive.
it's like cece in shake it up, in the first season there's an episode about her having dyslexia and how this affects her in school but doesn't make her any less smart, and then in the rest of the show she just becomes stupid
Personally, I dont think the show is taking jabs at dyslexia as much as it is just showing the naivety of Zach. He gets reprimanded by the end, which conveyed to me, as a young watcher when it initially came out, the weight of dyslexia and just how serious of a regard it should be held in. I definitely don't think this episode should've been banned.
Yeah I feel that, I think it’s definitely more that this episode was on “trying to be as clean as a whistle” Disney Channel that this episode got taken down. They don’t want any type of controversy over there
As someone with dyslexia I totally agree! I watched this episode around the time I found out I had it. There were kids in my school that were trying to do what Zach did and I appreciated the episode because of the end when Zach learns his lesson
Idk I have really bad dyslexia but I always found this episode funny I didn’t really feel like they were making fun of me. I just never understood why someone would fake a learning disability because the special Ed kids always got picked on constantly. I actually feel shake it up is lowkey worse with how they treat dyslexic characters cause they made the dumb character dyslexic. I know it’s because Bella is dyslexic in real life but it was still more in poor taste to me than this episode cause Zach is more the bit of joke here not bob.
Shake It Up was the first example of that Cici character getting any other traits other than being the dumb one. I feel as if they made it so that she faked being dumb to cover up her insecurity about her dyslexia, it could’ve worked so much better. Too bad Disney feels like they need dumb characters to act as foils to smart ones.
it definitely only aired twice. I remember it sticking out because it was the episode that introduced bob but they never showed it. the second time they aired it was when they were showing a marathon every episode of suite life
friend keep pushing with this videos. They are very well edited and you have a lot of charisma. The moment RU-vid starts recommending you, your channel will explode. Until then, keep pushing bro.
6:53 it's funny because in A Midsummer's Nightmare, an episode of the next season, Cody gets cast to play Bottom with Zack going "that part must stink!" 8:56 always wondered where'd this scene from the season 2 intro came from
i'm rewatching all of suite life for the first time since disney+ came out and i gotta say a good 80% of the jokes still hold up and get a genuine chuckle out of me and i remembered this episode when i got to s2 and realized we were never introduced to bob i was like "hey why isn't the dyslexia episode here" and well now here i am
I absolutely remember this episode, I'm almost positive I seen it twice but I definitely caught it when it premiered and the b plot was the absolute best Esteban carried the episode I do have to say that I never thought it was a bad way to talk about dyslexia, definitely not as bad as Jessie where Zuri was literally throwing gluten at that poor kid lmao
I definitely remember seeing this episode a few times on Disney Channel. I didn’t know they banned it. I don’t really think they were trying to poke fun at Dyslexia, Zack was just trying to get out of doing his schoolwork as usual
7:20 Nah. I did really well the first half of ceramics when it was just an ash tray or a teacup. But that second half when we had to start making creative stuff like a puzzle mug or a fricken monster sculpture...... that's where the struggle began.
I had the episode recorded on the DVR and, truth be told, I liked the B and C plot. If the episode aired. I would just skip the the A plot. Even during the review I skipped the clips of the A plot. As someone who has learning difference the episode is just too difficult to sit through. Honestly, the episode doesn’t do a good job of explaining that that extra time and other accommodations only give the kids with learning differences a more even playing field with those who don’t. The accommodations aren’t there to make the kids with learning differences “life’s easier”. Even with accommodations, school is still difficult. The episode doesn’t even really show how hard it can be to go through school with a learning difference. Students and even teachers will sometimes treat you different than everyone else because it. Zach and the audience needed to see the real struggle these kids go through. It’s a daily struggle. I wish the episode showed this. It could have been a really good episode, if the proper care and tact was put forth.
I mean , I have so many memories of this episode it clearly wasn't banned soon enough. "I studied the box so hard." I remember that vividly as zack got caught perfectly reading the back of a videogame box.
This episode aired in Malaysia several times back then cause I remember the scene where Esteban immitates Mr Mosby so well I could recall every single thing he said. Wow
I remember the dyslexia episode They ran it many times as a kid even on reruns. I never saw it as making fun of dyslexia I always saw it as Zack being lazy in yet another episode
i really don't see why its banned. i mean, characters can be shitty. thats the entire point of zach. but they could have explained dyslexia a bit more at the end and corrected zach that its not easy having it.
They did, Bob does a whole mini speech to contradict Zack right after he says it must be easy being dyslexic. I don't know why it wasn't mentioned in the video
I'm rewatching TSLOZAC on Disney+, and I didn't notice that 01x18 was missing. I kinda remember seeing this episode on Disney Channel, but I forgot it existed until now. Also, Maddie and London at 8:56 is in the Season 2 intro, and I didn't realize it was from this episode (for some reason, I thought it was in the episode Twins At the Tipton).
I remember this episode well. I'm on the spectrum and at the time , this was the closest to somebody being "different " being represented until Arthur and Sesame Street years later . Also, why is the Chris Brown episode not banned ?
I definitely remember seeing this episode as a kid before Disney banned it. I didn't even realize it was banned in the first place until I seen this video pop up. I can see why it was though. Even though the Estaban and Moseby parts were gold! I still laughed at them now. And I'm in my 20s! Funny stuff.
Okay. So, this is a thought I‘ve had for a while, because the fact that Zack‘s only seen as the dumb and lazy jerk in the show legit annoys me. I think there‘s a good chance that Zack has ADHD. He gets easily distracted, is always looking for fun things to stimulate him and has a really hard time focusing on his school work. A lot of people probably see him as someone who‘s not trying hard enough, but we‘re not really seeing things from his perspective. I hear him genuinely talk about how he is trying, but still struggling and I think of the same situation I was in at school. Now, we‘ve seen a lot of situations of him goofing off and so we‘re led to believe that he‘s just not trying. But, why is he goofing off instead of doing his work? I remember the reason I did that in school was because the work felt too hard and I much rather preferred to screw around all day instead of feeling stupid for not understanding anything. Now, he could also ask for help, but I don‘t think his support system is good enough for him to feel like he can ask for help. Both Carrie and Cody don‘t see Zack in a very good light and seem to think that Zack is genuinely an idiot. The rest of the characters seem to hold the same view of him outside of London probably. So, why would he want to ask for help from people who already see him as a lazy idiot anyway? He could get help from teachers, but he might see it as embarrassing to need the amount of help that he does. It could also be a situation where he‘s been through the whole tutoring thing already and it didn‘t do much for him. There‘s a chance that he might genuinely need an IEP. He overhears how Bob gets extra time on tests and he‘s in awe. All Zack is looking for is extra time on tests. Not a modified test. Not answers to cheat off of. Time. Out of all the things you could possibly give Zack to help him, extra time is the least unreasonable one. Again, it‘s a kid‘s sitcom, so they probably weren’t thinking about it all that much, but I can‘t help but get annoyed when Zack is showing clear signs of ADHD and is still just seen as a lazy dumbass.
I VIVIDLY remember the Esteban scene with him doing the Moseby impression… I had to have seen it more than a few times. The strange thing is I don’t remember seeing the rest of this episode AT ALL. I was only 4 during season 1 so I may have just forgotten it, but is it possible that scene was repurposed for a future episode that I’m forgetting? I’m planning to rewatch the series soon, maybe I’ll find it.
My boss practically insulted my learning disability. I mean, I never officially told her I had one, but she seems to see one in me; she thinks I'm incompetent and dependent on a guide.
I agree that Disney was right to ban the episode because Zack went WAY TOO FAR by faking dyslexia. Even for a 12 year old. I'll bet that, if someone Zack's age did the same thing in real life, he'd be expelled.
This episode definitely aired. I clearly remember seeing the part where Esteban did the impression of Mosbey. In fact, I think it must have been on tv at least a few times.
7:33 to be completely fair and frankly honest though, chiseling and widdling are entirely different skillsets from the hammering and gluing type of woodwork, carpentry type woodwork requires math, a lot of math. whereas chiseling and widdling require an artistically inclined mind and a good mindseye to see what you're going to be doing before you do it it would be a bit like saying someone can't possibly know how to shuffle cards since they suck at poker, (because they can't count cards) it's just different skillsets =} I totally believe that this kid was really great at some parts of woodwork and god awful at others.
At least my country (Norway) had the guts to air this episode multiple times. I also don't see the episode making fun of people with dyslexia, but instead satirizing those who mock people with dyslexia (i.e. Zack) and acknowledges that this type of mockery is a problem
They also banned the Episode that featured The Cheetah Girls and Chris Brown due to Chris Brown subsequent criminal history. Particularly his 2009 arrest for assaulting his then girlfriend Rihanna.
i LOVE your videos dude! can't believe you only have 2.78K subs! i have to say, i have VERY clear memories of this episode, but i don't even live in the states! if this got banned in the us, how in hell did it find its way to turkey?! either way, i'm not dyslexic but i definitely don't think this episode was handled THAT badly. you're not expected to agree with zack at any point anyway. i think i learned a lot about dyslexia just watching it as a kid. and that esteban-moseby b plot was absolutely unforgettable
The episode isn’t terrible Definitely seen worse from Disney lol. I have a learning disability but I knew to never let a tv show offend me because I already knew that the rules they have set in sitcoms aren’t the same rules we have in the real world. People need to get ahold of themselves but maybe I’m just someone who doesn’t have a heart Who knows
I’ve seen this episode! That’s crazy. I think the reaction was overblown. It was a character doing a bad thing and he learns in the end that it was bad. It wasn’t making fun of anyone.
I don't know about Disney Channel US but I live in the Philippines and I remember seeing the episode more than twice. Then again, I have coworkers based in the US who have said they remember things differently from myself and sometimes even my Indian and UK counterparts. Anyway, 14:23. Yes. I went out with a guy who has dyslexia and he's a really intelligent guy; his math is actually spot on and he had a great sense of humor. It's his language that sometimes made interesting conversations at times. I don't know if the episode should have been banned but the concept is fine and I agree with you that Esteban's scenes were golden (I still love it and I'm 28 now).
Due to never having disney channel, I didn’t know about this show growing up. As an adult however, I have been watching it via some not-so-ethical methods and thus didn’t realise this episode was banned while watching it. It felt a little odd seeing it for the first time and I'm honesty not surprised it was banned.
Then British media I feel would not ban it since shows like Horrid Henry exist where the whole show beyond to silly plot-lines is about two children with abusive parents that both developed a complex over it
This is my first time ever learning about this episode so watching this video was a bit jarring but super fascinating. For some reason I do remember watching the Chris brown ep. Makes me wonder about the other banned episodes of Disney shows.
I just rewatched the whole series and I’m 21 for reference and I’ve definitely seen this banned episode many times when I was younger so their claim makes no since
11:59 12:05 12:12 totally agree with you, my friend. We disabled learners do _not_ talk like 11:47. We are not wimps or pitiful losers. Just because we have learning disabilities, it doesn't mean it automatically cost us our dignity. I swear, people without LD's can be so shallow and superficial. Especially my boss. She's questioned me a few times for my mistakes and misinterpretations. And she was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift. I'll admit, I am much better with a helping hand and guide, but come on, that's no excuse for being insensitive. One of our student leader's responsibilities is organizing who works which shifts on the schedule, and my boss scolded him for not noticing I had signed up for a one-person shift. When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her. She said she didn't think so, was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen" (something like, that, so I'm not perfectly quoting her), and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. I was mad at myself for not standing up to her, but then I compensated for it. My college's disability services was hosting a program to educate and prepare high schoolers in Special Ed, who were considering enrolling here. We caterers were serving the food, and every time I saw my boss talking to a high schooler, I would immediately go over there and either a. provide whatever excuse to get her somewhere else, or b, offer _my_ help to the kid. My boss eventually concluded that I was deliberately trying to keep her away from the Special Ed students, and she insisted I tell her what was going on. I "reluctantly admitted" I was trying to prevent her from potentially saying anything offensive to the learning-disabled kids. How I wasn't sure she would be 100% respectful; that I worried she might question them if they make any honest mistakes (well, honest to disabled learners, not the general population), even if unintentionally. When she expressed her offense at such a judgmental, faithless perspective, I basically 13:18: "I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. I was just trying to keep their feelings from getting hurt, just to be on the safe side. I mean, having a learning disability is tough, especially when others don't understand it and make the disabled feel less. They get looked down upon very easily, and I didn't want them to feel that way." I hope that made my boss feel bad. The woman who labeled and condescended gets labeled and condescended back.
You’re right, this episode had to have come on more than once cause I vividly remember it and I was 5 back then. So it had to have been aired at least a few times
I rmbr watching this episode a couple of times. Censorship/restrictions for children shows is a lot more lenient in Canada than USA so i wonder if the episode is only banned in America
but cece had dislexia in Shake It Up which was taken in serious light , unlike what zack and cody did , can you talk about the other zack and cody episode when cody is trying to make chef paulio eat heathly
Thank you so much, that means a lot! I hope I get to 1k soon too, it’s been a long time coming haha! I’m also so glad to hear you’ve enjoyed my videos, thank you!
7:20 As someone who hasn't watched the show in years I'm gonna make a theory Yes, Cody does suck at woodshop, but he did whatever he could to still pass his class whether it be extra credit assignments or staying after school to redo some of them with his teacher. Therefore he still got an A and his teacher had to think of *something* positive to say about Cody so they said "What a little chiseler." This is how I passed my Basic Drawing class in high school that was required for my art credit. My teacher even said that I was the literally worst artist he'd ever met and that I could never draw something good. I know drawing's hard for me but he didn't have to keep shouting at me and yanking my hand to make me draw the way he wants :( Anyways, theory and trauma dump over.
Zach should have faked having ADHD and then they find out he actually has it. That would have been a good episode. However the synopsis of this episode strikes me more as Zack-partakes-in-modern-day- Tom- Sawyer- esque- shenanigans.
I feel like a lot of the xenophobic jokes that Disney made could've worked better if they wherent xenophobic and possibly racist but instead jokes about the then known as "health nut hippy parents types" who where into conspiracy theories, in other words antivaxers. because I remember seeing those types get made fun of in the late 2000s, 2010s even and frankly rubbing a fat chicken on your chest reminds me heavily of those posts about potatoes sucking out toxins and turning black like sure it might be kinda shitty to make fun of people for being duped, and terrified of medical staff, but basically anything is better than xenophobia and racism
You either didn't watch that episode of Hannah montanah you're talking about or you missed the point entirely. Thst crap about Oliver being a sugar hungry freak and dying never happened. It was imaginary. Miley and Lillie were over reacting and the entire lesson of the episode was that they should calm down learn about the problem before pulling shit and most importantly trust the person with the condition to know how to handle their own condition.
I know I did a pretty poor job of articulating what I meant in this video, so I’ll try and clear things up. What I meant to say is that they filmed a version of that episode where Miley and Lillie don’t understand diabetes at all, but they ended up having to redo the episode before it aired because it wasn’t received well, thus the episode being “banned.” The episode that we all saw on Disney Channel was the better version, at least that’s what I gathered from my research while making this video. So yes, the stuff about Oliver being a sugar hungry freak never happened in the episode that aired, it seemingly happened in the version of that episode that was scrapped. Hopefully that cleared things up and thanks for watching my video regardless!
@@AlecComes Yeah, No Sugar Sugar is the one that didn't air, but it had early-released to some video-on-demand services and the way they did it in the original cut had a myriad of inaccuracies in it that were actually so bad that some kids with diabetes who watched it cried because they felt like their favorite show was making fun of them. (I knew of the forum this came up on at the time so I heard this stuff in real time back when it happened.) The complaints got its original airing canceled and there was fallout in which at least one really annoying fan showed up to berate the parents for complaining. In both versions the basic plot from Miley and Lily is the same, but in the original there's a lot more inaccuracy and slapstick and little to no correcting from Oliver at the end. Uptight (Oliver's Alright), which premiered a year later and wasn't banned, was retooled specifically to fix stuff like that.
