Permaculture instructor Andrew Millison journeys to India to film the epic work of the Eco-Factory Foundations's Anand Chordia. Anand is an heir to the Suhana Spice company and has used his position in the company to create the most sustainable industrial site that I've ever seen. You've got to see this to believe it. Zero waste, zero water, zero energy. Is this the future of factories?

One thing I love is that Andrew isn't trying to take over the video. Some youtube or TV presenters will often outspeak people showing a project/hobby they've spent decades on, but instead of taking the spotlight, Andrew lets Anand show the audience what awesome stuff there is. I feel Andrew's here to set the stage for cool people to show cool things that he's genuinely interested in. I respect that, much more than others who just try t make a big show of themselves. He has a real respect for what these guys have done!

Anand's approach is so remarkable. Natural ventilation using the flora, electric machinery and recyclable plastic; to these things which are often overlooked and perceived as unavoidable, Anand has brought great solutions to the table. Really makes you think about what more can other companies be doing in the name of sustainability?

I never trust a businessman who is getting free promotion out of something like this. Like capitalism is antithetical to ecology. Anarchism's philosophy says "you cannot arrive at the world you want using means that manner that world impossible". Capitalism entails growth at all costs. Reducing the carbon footprint of growth is all well and good, but it's not possible to reduce carbon so much that infinite growth is possible. We will still be transferred by climate change, just at a slower rate. I wonder what he pays his workers, if he share profits with them, if they have the opportunity to buy into the company as owner operators, etc.

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing I've been trying to achieve here in Canada! Next week I start classes geared towards urban farming, and I'm taking these classes in order to meet some people in this city that have connections to people of power and already have land purchasing power, and I'm planning to try and pitch my ideas to them. I essentially want to do something similar, a large plot of land as a food forest, with a housing co op in it that will house the land stewards, a wood workshop for processing harvested trees and to produce in house stuff or produce mass timber structures like the food processing area. I'd also love to do eco tourism in there as well, with a music studio/community center in it as well for unwinding after work, having small local artists come perform, etc. Another corner of the lot (likely beside the woodshop) would also be a plastics recycling depot (likely tied into One Army's Precious Plastic's open source platform) that will take in and recycle plastics into various things needed for the land or in the various buildings on the lot. And I want to design this to be a blueprint so other people can take some of my designs and just replicate them elsewhere. I've been talking about this for a while now and as a disabled person it was really hard to imagine how I'd pull it off, but with this course I'm starting and meeting some of the people I already have who LOVE my ideas, I think I might finally be starting to work towards this goal. The way we use land in North America is terrible. I want to be part of the solution as to how to fix that.
