i am using comma for over 4 months and its nothing but the friggin damn best thing i ever bought. I can understand the skepticism but its really really good, i cannot drive my car anymore without this. i did several long trips and it makes it so much easier. George is really the brain behind this and when you have that big brain you might not be the best presenter. He never misleads or tries to sell what it is not.
@@edweiser63 But it's true though. You can watch LONG streams with this guy and he's a proper enthusiast. If you look into his history you'll see he's been around for years and just loves messing with giant companies.
Jesus. The whingers you guys get in the comments here. Yes he's a nerdy guy. Yes, he speaks his mind. No he's not rude as such, he's just saying what he's thinking, like all higher end nerds do. People like this run every minute of everyones day, but no one seems to understand or appreciate that. People seem to actually WANT to be spoken to by a corporate shill, it's so weird.
What? You can speak your mind just fine and there are countless ways to speak your mind as well. There's always a way to word something better so that it is more receptive. At the end of the day, it's how people perceive you and that plays a key role in how much they respect you and will listen to you. You can't live in a society with people around you and just say and do whatever you want. If that' the case, then they are also free to think and say whatever they want about you as well. All fair game right?
Yeah, but he’s no where near as enthusiastic as he was back then, he no longer believes he can move mountains, I was really hoping he would, maybe you need to be crazy enough to think you can defy gravity to any chance of actually doing so...
If you watch his other videos, you'll see how passionate he is about OpenPilot. Elon musk originally asked him to program Tesla Autopilot and he ended up doing it for the masses instead, thank goodness. There's nothing like this at the moment that you can pop into mostly any newer car and just start driving itself
Some of the comments here are really funny. Hotz was the first one to jailbreak an iPhone then the PS3 and now this and you are complaining because the guy is slightly different (awesome) than you are? This guy is at the level of John Carmack (people complaining, of course you don't know who he is) these are the kind of guys who you would bully in middle school and now you work at Bed Bath and Beyond :) Relax people it is just a joke, I don't mean to hurt your feelings.
So what if broke into these devices? If your criteria for being a better person than everyone else alive is THIS, well, not much can be said for YOUR life.
cyuiyu wyguiyui yes he is John carmack kickstarted the gaming industry with DOOM And geohotz is kickstarting open sourced autonomy Shut up and think before you talk
This is the same geohot who made the famous blackra1n jailbreak for early iPhones, and was one of the first to jailbreak the PS3. He's got lots of experience.
I get what you're saying but this is pretty much classic Geohot. It's how he's been way back when he released the first iPhone jailbreak, it's how he's been when he and Sony were essentially at war. Dude is talented dev and enthusiast at heart but he's never been a spokesperson.
It is a kit. It works great, but it is not an integrated feature like autopilot. The software is open source and even he does not know exactly how it performs on each car model
@@FarHanSolo Haven't tried in the snow yet but I suspect it would do okay following other cars tracks and just fail with no visable tracks. That said this isn't full autonomous and I'd never let it drive in those conditions other than a quick test on a road by myself out of curiosity. The main thing stopping this from being ready for the masses is comments like yours proving most don't have the brain capacity to understand there's an in between full manual and full autonomous. We've been working our way up that curve since cars where invented and this is just another incremental step along the way. If you can't see the value in a system that works damn good most of the time you're probably the type that doesn't even use cruise on the highway which is why I had to get radar cruise since you monkeys suck at maintaining speed. You're loss really. I've used this system on an 2400 mile road trip it handled 90-95% of the highway driving and really made 8 hour days on the road feel more like 5 hours. You get really comfortable with it's limitations the same way you do with regular cruise control pretty quickly and it's as simple as driving without it in the first place to take over for a second then re-engage. I had several sections on this trip where I had no interaction aside from looking out the window paying attention for 30-60 minutes at a time. For the naysayers it's possible to drive a Model T also but I bet most of you have no idea how Manual that car is compared to your modern automatic car(seriously you're on YT look up a video manual spark advance, most of you don't even know what that is thanks to automation, just saying). The automatic transmission didn't mean you could stop paying attention either but it made driving easier(if a bit less fun).
I'd like to know why everyone is so hip to cough up control of their cars? I LIKE driving, don't find it boring, at all, and I sure as hell wouldn't trust a machine to do it for me -- not at night, in the rain, in snow, down a Peruvian mountainside in torrential downpour, not anything that would challenge most human drivers. What's the point? If you don't like to drive, take Uber. Your momma needs the money, anyway.
@@Mireaze Less than $1000 is a lot cheaper than the $7k from Tesla, and if you can afford a car with adaptive cruise control then another $1k is cheap!
I’m pretty sure when she laughed and said “I know what a car harness is” that she had no idea what a car harness was in this scenario. It’s like the kids who say they know all about something they don’t just so they look smarter.
I actually enjoyed his quick and fast style, it seemed so much more natural, like 2 friends enjoying a drive, than many demo rides with engineers that are very scripted canned corporate marketing gibberish.
I feel like he was making a lot of bold claims such as his system being better then autopilot, which may or may not be true. He also misinformed Emmy about how low the speed of lkas on the Honda worked (from ~40 and up). I also feel like he was being a passenger driver.
Jay Patel He didn't say it's better than autopilot. He says that he doesn't believe even autopilot works in one specific situation. Also, I use LKA in my '18 Honda well below 40mph all the time and Hotz deals with these interfaces with the stock cars all the time. He writes code that tricks the stock system into accepting input from the dev kit to operate the stock systems.
i thought the same but there are advantages for having the developer here, when they drove through the intersection and turned on the blinker. The developer probably knew that would be an issue and asked for it to be engaged again. maybe he just needs a bit more practice talking to news people.
Very awkward. “This is called a Car Harness”... “I know what a ‘car harness’ is”. We as viewers don’t need to see that. A little bit of editing could have been done.
candlercando actually he’s calling it that specifically because it was named something else before, so they’re renaming a bunch of stuff to make it more simple for people.
megamanxu Having details is a great thing. And having a good host reviewing is a great thing. But imagine how much smoother this ride around could have been with editing out of banter, letting the host repeat specific points and maybe a little voiceover narration. I’m sure many raw interviews go like this but we usually never know it
She is so full of herself and didn't even see the points he was trying to make, with her ending statement "slightly better". Reminds me of that reporter (Kara Swisher) who did the cast with Elon Musk. Some people are not cut for such work. Moving on.
As a proffessional driver... I can assure you that you drive subconciously alot of the time. Bascialy your brain is resting whilst you are 'in the zone'. Your not going to last long if you have to have 100 % concentration all of the time, knowing that the auto drive doesn't fully work.
@@whatsupbudbud Not to mention your insurance premium going up, each time you make a claim ( if your alive). And come to think of it... who would be held responsible? Will they put a car in jail for manslaughter ? They'll probably bring in a law making the owner responsible !
Why is everyone stressing hands free driving? As an older person what would be much more useful is a simpler warning system for when my car starts to drift out of the lane or a dangerous driving situation starts to occur. My hands are on the wheel already and I can react quickly. I use cruse control and over the years I have developed the *strong* habit of keeping my foot an inch or two above the gas pedal. I developed this habit after several close calls with stopped traffic and the additional delay of lifting my foot from the floor made the close call even closer. With hands free "assisted" driving what do you do with your hands? Keep them hovering over the steering wheel? Not likely. Try sitting at your desk and hold your hands over the keyboard for 15 minutes without touching anything. It takes a lot of upper body strength and stamina. So what do you do with your hands while the assisted driving is on? Hold them to your chest like the woman in the video? Put them in your lap? Pick up your coffee? Rummage in your purse or backpack? What does this add to your reaction time? A better solution for me is a system where I keep my hand or hands on the steering wheel all the time and the assist system nudges the wheel strongly enough that my relaxed hands can go with the flow, but allowing me to override the steering if I see a danger. My hands are on the wheel, reacting to the road, ready to respond to the unexpected. The primary goal of the lane assist system is to make my driving safer, not to drive the car most of the time except for the unexpected times.
You know you can keep your hands on the wheel while this is happening right? She just chose not to. As long as you aren't moving the steering wheel, going with the flow is entirely possible. Also, why is putting your hands on your lap so much harder than keeping them on the steering wheel for you? Just sit in the chair.
For that scenario in the beginning when the car was about to hit the truck, the system should warn the driver of what it thinks is happening and say what it will do “high speed large vehicle ahead, autopilot will swerve left” . This gives the driver a sense of what to expect.
Great review in real time! This is proof to me that we are a long, long way from self driving cars. I am impressed that this system responds at least 50% better than stock systems, but it still didn’t catch the semi. Consumer Reports is studying this same flaw as most systems will not catch a vehicle darting into your lane from the side.
Misses one thing, "we are a long long way from it". Sounds like a typical passive-aggressive reponse of someone who doesn't want the technology to succeed but doesn't want to admit it.
@@ashton9699 - No, my response is based on actual evidence & reality. When this technology can fully drive us around WITHOUT accidents or injuries, that will be my acceptance moment.
I really like that you cover subjects like this, Hotz is such a great guy.. Hope next model will be something more OE look like a rear view mirror integration.
He needs a Steve Jobs for these types of demos. Steve Waz was the programer but he was not the best person for demonstrating the technology to the masses. As someone who enjoys tech and is knowledgeable of what goes into making it and operating it, I enjoy his demo. I don't think the average consumer would understand what he is trying to deliver here. I would come up with: "The same auto pilot that is in Tesla that costs over 7k is available to you for a only a thousand dollars".
I think it's something he's getting wrong, he doesn't believe in marketing because he said that for him it's like fooling people and that it doesn't make it natural but the truth is that he has a system as good as the tesla one but people will trust in tesla and not in comma simply because tesla is great at marketing and comma is terrible
This dude thinks his product is perfect, until a truck puts him in its place, which makes me laugh because it really pisses him off especially when its being recorded.
George is not scared or showing his mom a new drawing. He is just really trying to act polite and behave lmao. I am pretty sure that it takes him a lot of focus . U know what I am talking about if u have seen his live streams.
@@Therysin If you do, then I don’t know how you would gauge from her previous reactions that she actually thought the systems were comparable. And frankly, for something like this, I think it’s fine to have a layman’s perspective. Out of curiosity, what made her sound so obviously stupid to you?
I was sympathetic braking at 0:52, and the gadget didn't even slow down for that car suspiciously edging into the intersection.. I think I'll wait for version 3..
How hard he throw the Honda lane assist under the bus 🤣😂 But his slight arrogance is well-deserved! He is a legend! He fix what the biggest companies in the world don't achieve (or refuse to implement... apple*cough*). This system is the biggest motivation to purchase a 2020 Corolla hybrid! Suck on this Tesla (with there bad clearances etc.) Regarding Tesla... this system proved to work BETTER then the Tesla auto pilot. How many updates does is get? Well... does it have a active community which the system can learn from? Oh dear! I don't get, why EVERYBODY mounts this thing so high up. As said in the interview... it distracts and take away visibility. I will mount mine as low as possible.
So bottom line it's still the open source hustle. We sell you the hardware, you install the software, and if something goes wrong and you die it's at your risk -- no guarantees, warrantees, or responsibility. It's a pretty impressive software accomplishment. I'm going to check out the git hub repository; I'm assuming it's still OpenCV with various C/C++ and Python tying it all in a big ball of Deep Learning yarn. Dude is still a glib hustler pushing a package that is not oriented to a consumer but a limited audience of hardware and software savvy users. I still remember his crash and burn from several years ago when the federal government sent him a letter asking for information and he realised a simple disclaimer is not enough to save your ass from the lawyers and regulators. He's like every glib smart-ass in love with himself, despite some fairly impressive accomplishments .
I would be more than happy to have a device that automatically slows down my car to the speed limit if I am over it, automatically, based on GPS data. I bought an expensive Android Auto device and it won't even warn me properly when I am speeding but only show the information on the screen while I am not looking at the screen because, you know, we have to look outside of the car while driving, not inside. No matter what settings I use they never work. Tried both major map apps without success. Not going to buy an expensive car just for that feature.
Wow! You had me going there with your title. It should have read "This gadget improves your cars existing ACC and lane-keeping technology". After searching for a solution for my 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD, I now realize that it's never going to happen for me. My truck doesn't have the base program that you need to enhance.
The Comma Three should take me to the best prime rib dinner in Vegas. The Semi-colon should avoid semi's entering my lane. The Em Dash should take me to the nearest clean restroom.
They’ll need to adapt this system to higher end luxury cars for mass adoption. I’m not seeing many people driving Corollas or Civics willing to drop $1k for something like this. There will be adopters here and there but not by the masses until that changes.
Higher end vehicles would more than likely already have a very funcional Level 2 system. $1K is insanely reasonable for level 2 considering most other manufacturers will charge several thousands. Tesla charges $7000 after delivery. And remember it's all open source, and runs on a OnePlus 3T and has a 3D printed case, so you have a route to do it much cheaper on your own if you'd like.
I have the base model 2019 Kia Forte. When I emailed support, I was told that it doesn't add ACC and Lane Keeping -- as this video's description suggests. For the device to work, your car must come with those functionalities as standard -- mine doesn't. Can some please clarify?
So, car engines have a computer problem that has plagued them since the 90s. That is that they are extremely basic and not designed well, and they haven't changed much in almost 30 years. What this device/software does is attempt to interact with that car computer to make it better. That's all it does. It's basically a ginormous removeable software upgrade for the engine computer. The problem here is that the engine computer is the component actually driving the car. A good analogy is your brain and nervous system. Sure, you have legs (wheels) and a brain (this thing), but if you break your lower back, your nervous system isnt connected to it anymore, so neither is your brain. If the car computer doesn't have builtin control of/connection to steering, gas, brakes, and radar sensors, this smart "brain" device doesn't either. So, the engine's computer in the Kia Forte probably isnt connected to any sensors or the steering wheel. Therefore no assistive driving. The only way to fix that is to get aftermarket parts or get a different car

@@wantsanewvehicle Jesus people, he's an actual genius. Do you expect him to be just like a professional presenter? Nearly every minute of every day is because of people like this.
I dont know... I don't think I can trust it, at least not now. There are just so many other factors, variables and data that the device doesn't have access to. Weight of car (affects braking distance) aerodynamics, how well the veh can attempt a sharp turn etc. whether there are any off-market parts that might report wrong data, tyre condition, weather and road conditions, blind spots etc. There are just too many elements that can fail. To depend on a camera to make life-or-death decisions for you a thousand times per second. And only using the car's built in sensors. You'll never know what kind of small glitches that might come from an insignificant part that might cause a false reading.. This feels like a cheap toy for now. Something you would buy to play with for a while then never touch it again.. 🤔 Am I right?
Is this going to work on 2015 toyota highlander le plus and 2007 camry le . Pls advice 🙏 and pls send me link where can I buy from thus device . Because your website doesnot work .
1:25 The safe thing to do is….. wait for it! Slow down!! Fairly wild concept, I know, but hear me out. If you simply just slow down a bit in this situation, you minimize exponential risk. People who have never driven a tractor trailer do not understand what goes on with navigating those vehicles through cities. We all depend on the services that these Truckers provide, yet we are so hesitant to give them the space and time that they need and deserve. The next time you encounter a tractor trailer, a dump truck, or something of the sort, I implore you to reconsider how you drive around them. Ps: I know we are slow and it’s frustrating getting stuck behind us and having to move at our pace. Trust me, we’re going as fast as we can in the safest manner possible.
Does anyone know if I can add adaptive cruse to my wife’s 2021 SLT Yukon. My 2020 SLT has it. Only the Denali offers it for 2021. The sales manager said he’d install in at half price if it’s feasible in the future? Otherwise we just but the worlds most expensive grocery getter!
OMG! This is HORRIBLE in SOOOO many ways! While as a technology entrepreneur I applaud George's technology on its own merits, it is FAR from being "prime time" in ANY sense. What he has here with Comma 2 is essentially a replacement for a 10 year-old driver behind the wheel. Would YOU get in an Uber with a 10 year old behind the wheel? In traffic? At night? In the rain? I seriously doubt it. But the main problem here is that this technology lulls you into the false sense of security to trust it "most of the time", but NOT all of the time as you would of an experienced human driver. And you can never be sure of WHEN not to trust the technology when an unusual situation arises. Imagine this same lady behind the wheel, all alone in the car, with her phone in one hand and a hot coffee in the other. Then the SAME scenario plays out with the semi-truck cutting her off. Besides the delay of getting her hands on the wheel, there is sure to be a mess in the car, even if she manages to avoid a collision. Just like keeping adolescents off the road until they pass a practical driving test with a DMV examiner, I'd say we should keep this technology off the road until it can pass that same test REPEATEDLY without failure. And even then I'd wait until the full production version was road-tested for a full year thereafter before I'd trust it to drive my kids to school. So George, I'd say you're better off using this technology on a harvester that's lumbering along in 10,000 acres of wheat in Kansas, or on a robotic production line than putting humans at risk like this. But by all means keep going George. Hope to see you at the DMV some time soon.
so i checked and this only works on cars that's already got radar/adaptive cruise control, it won't work on cars that don't already have the technology.. All this does is adds lane keep assist.. which from 2020 onwards if a car has adaptive cruise, already has lane keep assist anyway no? For eg., I can't take a 2010 Toyota Corolla and add this technology to it.. a 2020 Corolla, sure.. but then again, the 2020 already's got this tech :D
I must be missing something, She asked so, “so what all does someone need to get this system going?” All you need is a cable and the comma device. Humm... what about the steering motor ? My 2018 still will. Steer without me doing it. God forbid I let my truck stop it’s self. I have a lot explaining too do. Sounds like people will also need a car set up to steer and break. So it’s more then just the comma and a cable,
If my phone was this unreliable I wouldn't use it. For me to use such a system in a car it needs to be 99.999999% reliable - and that's probably still 1 really bad car accident per lifetime. From what I saw in the video, I would say this system works less than 20% of the time??
This looks, overall, pretty unnerving and unsettling to me. At one point, as far as I could tell from the yellow and green appearing to be off, she went thru a red light. Not being able to identify a stopped vehicle ahead? By the time you realise it is not going to, you have to do an emergency stop. Geez. Why is this system even allowed? It is a menace. I would not like to be in the car in front. The fact that the software is open source and held in GitHub is ok, but the big thing is the database. Driver overrides are fed back to the system and incorporated in the database. Presumably automatically. So what if someone hacks in and feeds in lots of totally wrong responses? But even if all that is ok, the ability to plough straight into the back of a stationary car ahead, at speed, is not a 'feature' I am in favour of. There is something fundamentally wrong with a technology that can do this. And it is not just this company. It is Tesla too. My car is nowhere near so high-tech but it can detect a collision coming up ahead and apply the brakes to at least limit the damage. So how come a far more high-tech system does not continue to have such low-tech capabilities built into it, like automatic reflexes are still built into humans even though they are super-intelligent in dealing with the near-infinity of edge-cases compared to an AI?
There are too many spam free points for free generators, I cannot understand how people fall for those scams. The only web app that is working 100% is GameCrook, tried it myself.
Id buy tbis if it was just a little less money. $1,300 for this is just a bit high. They should have a special so a bunch of people get it and it gets better tbrough learning.

Still garbage. In one of the road test, the tester car kept accelerating on the red light for some weird reason. And do not have the control for the side of the car, not blind spot either, so does not slow down if there is a intruder in your lane, which is very critical. He is actually said himself that autonomious cars are scam, at least for another 10 years. So chill and keep driving your cars.
