Starter not good but as long as you ride with friends you always got mules for a push start. Nice table.

There’s 2 copper contacts and a copper ring on the plunger that probably need replacing.It’s easily replaced once you get the starter out.

From a retired Harley mechanic Evo back to flathead Evo selinoid has a issue with gumming up take the cover off clean the inside with a clean rag with brake cleaner do the same with the plunger and spring reassemble. Make sure the relay and ground are good and fire it up.

Put a starter button right down close to the starter, I have one on my Evo. It sometimes wouldn't start with the button on the handlebars. Fixed my problem. 95 percent of the time it starts off the handlebar button, but when it won't I just press the second starter button I mounted close to the starter. Works great and not a big deal.

I put a starter clutch in my '99 Heritage Springer last year. It's a real pain. Gotta loosen the oil tank. God bless the family of that little boy.

Hay itchy, thanks for sharing and great job on the coffee table. I had a 99 fatboy that needed a starter replacement only. I was able to remove it with long socket elen wrench and a short extension to remove the two mounting bolts, then gradually work the starter out. I hope this helps. give it a try. Try putting the bike in a higher gear and pushing the bike a few inches forward bumping the motor over to a different position on the clutch basket ring gear, maybe you have some worn out teeth on the gear. That will verify whether or not you need the starter drive or the clutch basket

I think my local Harley charges about $130 hr to work on bikes now. Crazy. And they don't really like to work on bikes that are ten yrs old or older.

Jackshaft, starter clutches are a pain in the ass to do. Stock Harley electronic ignitions need a certain amount of revolutions in a given time to fire. So, yes you can get a Kickstarter kit from the aftermarket, but you'd need to convert to points, or Dyna S ignition for it to work. Jayman...

I no it may sound crazy but check your battery connections Just a thought

You should be able to find a kick start kit for it. My 79 Sporty only had electric start. First thing done was the addition of a kick start and a sissy bar. My 78 shovel has both while my 2011 FLHTK only has electric. If you can swing it go with a kick start backup. Far better then finding a down hill run with pushers. My buddy's soft tail didn't agree with push starting, unless you had a lot of help. Sounds like your starter drive took a dump.

There is a kicker kit for evos,didn't notice if yours is an evo

Tap the starter with a screwdriver until you get a new one

You got friends. 3rd gear push start. It will get you home. Hope you don't have to, and yes it is a pain in the neck. God bless.
