I started with Barenbrug Cool Blu, had multiple bad wash outs, but still have probably 50 cover from the KGB. I needed to have full dirt cover for winter so I thru down Barenbrug RPR and some more Cool Blu along with a detach, everything is looking good just need some more sun to come out. I'm really anxious to see how they blend.
So I renovated my front lawn last year with 50% barenbrug RPR and 50%ryan knorr elite rye grass, it’s looking great so far, no complaints it is already greened up this year 5/17/2024 really well, I don’t have irrigation so this summer will be the first full season so I can’t wait to see how it does
I would add this as pertains to Kentucky Bluegrass versus ryegrass- -given enough water and food and decent enough soil with a minimum of some microbes soil activity, Kentucky Bluegrass will self repair itself whereas my experience with rye grass is that it will leave damaged areas of turf bare for weeds to come up: especially Crabgrass followed by Veronica Speedwell and Spurge.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare tell you the truth a northeast landscaper’s all purpose grass seed . Mixture of several annual ryegrass mixes along with 5% of KGB . Going on 2 1/2 seasons since I fixed the receding lawn from grubs. Amazing what some TLC can do!
Great info! I kept going back and forth on if I wanted to overseed PRG or KBG. I went with KBG but still have the PRG in my lawn. Love both types. Good to see you back, brotha!
Hey George, Did an overseed of TTTF/KBG and fert. Lawn thick and lush as ever in just one month but not quite that deep green color. Not sure why overwatering perhaps? My phosphorus levels came back high so does that play a part in iron uptake? Also, when would you do last fert app for winter and do you recommend ammonium sulfate? Your lawn rockin’
thanks lance! missed you guys too! fiscal year is ending at work and i have been working like a dog the last month catching up on things appreciate you stoppin by!
Finished lawn reno with Johnathan Green BB Ultra. PR/Kbg. Deepest darkest green on the block AMAZING.. Going to do the POP and Kelp 2 weeks before Halloween for the Big Show..
My dad and I are stuck between kbg and prg... and I laughed out loud when you said we have mild conditions here. Eastern Washington has extreme temperatures in the summer and winter. West coast this would do great in. Kgb it is. There goes our water bill..
Great video. I did a full KBG reno mid august. I knew going into it it would take a long time and it’s proven true lol. Still a ways to go but it’s a beauty so far. Backyard is still tall fescue though. Leaving that alone.
Have had good results with RGS. I swear you can see the difference the next day with RGS, humic12, etc. I planted lot of prg last fall. Have battles fungus all season.
for fun, dropped some PR in a bare spot (~200 sq ft) last fall. Looked great! I was really impressed! But I'm in OKC... RIP, my sweet young PR test bed. 9/20/21 - 6/15/22. "She lived her life like a candle in the wind".
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Some summers certainly worse than others, but this one was pretty bad. We had ~60 day streak of ZERO rainfall. None. Not a drop. Regularly above 100°. Hit 110° in late July. My TTTF wasn't too happy either, as you might imagine!
Ryegrass also produces less thatch. I have a Sport RPR Golf Grass which spreads and creeps which most ryegrasses don't . I have never tried PGR I'm going to try it in the spring thanks for the advice much appreciated.
Another great video George. I have a tall fescue/kbg mix in my lawn that was a full reno in fall 2020. I like the 3 inch mow. I’m thinking about over-seeding with prg next fall.
I've had great results with all Green County products. Air8, Humic12, Green Pop, Green Effect, and Micro Green too. I've been using various LCN synthetic ferts for a few years. Prodiamine WDG. I also mixed it up with Ammonia Sulfate + Green Effect (FAS) this fall based on your recommendations and it's rockin' hard! Hydretain serves me well. Played a bit with Anderson's lines too. I tried the area code grass seed company and it was mixed results. My lawn basically looks like no one else's in my neighborhood. I field a lot of questions from people. haha.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I should start doing RU-vid and show you my tricks do you wanna see my KGB turf it anint no joke But George I luv want u are doing you taught me alot
Lawn is looking good, PGR is great for seeding but I would probably apply it a day or two before seeding since it takes a few days to start suppressing the vertical growth and you want it to sit on the leaf for a day before you mow it short and then seed. So I would think about 2 days before the actual seeding would be best, but glad it worked out. I believe you can also re-apply to new seedlings and it will benefit them as well (you'll need to re-apply to the rest of the lawn anyway to avoid a rebound surge of growth). You'll want to track your GDD.
Awesome Contant, what type of grass would you recommend for living in South Florida where I can irrigate often, but still have challenges with the heat? I want to make all my neighbors jelly. Thanks exclamation.
Thanks William! If i lived in florida, i would without a doubt have some type of hybrid bermuda (not common bermuda, it must be hybrid bermuda) it is the KING of warm season grass. Its dark green and can be mowed low which will give it a clean look that your neighbors will be jealous of. Only issue is, its very hard to grow from seed and will most likley need to be sodded to be succesfully sowed. Good luck!
Love your stuff George. Thanks for making this topic fun and know that your efforts are appreciated! I found this video as a neighbor and I were discussing throwing down rye grass seed shared between our lawns, but we’re not sure if it’s the best fit. We have a lot of mature oak trees in a southern climate, so finding something that can survive and thrive in shade as well as intense heat is a tough question. Any thoughts or recommendations?
Great content, George. But you didn't list or talk about the new and improved Ryegrass varieties that have been enhanced that aren't susceptible to disease as much and all that. Other than reading "Hat Trick" on your seed bag, you didn't mention any .... I just reseeded my tall fescue lawn (shout out to GCI Turf) but I didn't add any Ryegrass. I'd be interested in the new and improved stuff to help fill out the lawn.
Thanks Seeno and i appreciate the feedback. I will keep that in mind for ryegrass content going forward 👍 in the mean time, i have both varities we used in the description along with their individual strengths
Many blends are 80% blue, 20% prg. I think that rye is just used as a mother grass for the KBG. I prefer using pure KGB weeks before adding any rye but thats just my thoughts, actually testing that out this year on a full reno.
I just bought a house and it has irrigation. I would like to have nice stripes to make my yard stand out. It’s in Pinehurst in a golf neighborhood. I was thinking of mixing KBG & PRG. Unless you think it’s better to mix PRG & tall fescue or something. I have toro grandstand and toro time master. Let me know what you recommend and thank you!
Just found this video. I bought some blackout grass seed kbg and rye and i planted last monday and here it is the next monday and no grass popping up. Im afraid i did something wrong
1:03 in the UK at least it was down to Premier League football spending a ton of money developing ryegrass into some budget lawn into the best in the business with selective cultivation which turned the mudfield football pitches of the 80s/90s into a thing of the past.
Where I live they use Rye grass after they cut down the Bermuda in the winter, so if you grow Rye grass in the winter and it gets 95 to 115 in the summer it will dye, but will it re seed itself and comeback in the winter?
Hi! Love the channel. I do have a question for you. I will be doing a full lawn renovation this fall. Should I still be applying pre emergent now or don’t bother ? Thanks!
Thanks! its up to you... how bad is your weed pressure? if its not that bad i would just hit them with a post emergent mid to late spring and let it ride out til the fall
Careful if you overseed with the newer dark green varieties, if you don't do a full nuke on your lawn those thin spots that take will be a darker green then the rest of your lawn and look patchy.
Omg, this is my issue. I have giant lime green patches all over b/c I chose to overseed. I think my plan is to rip out lime green sections and reseed, it’ll take time but seems like that’s my best option.
I am in NJ and my house gets a ton of sun , I bought Scott’s northeastern grass seeds is that good ? Or if you can recommend me something good as well I can add to these seeds
I live in Washington state and want to do a renovation to control my grass type. I love KBG but for my back yard, I need a faster germination. I want to mix KBG and PRG. What type of rye do you recommend. I want thin grass leaves, dark green and striping?
@@jakestatefarm915 have you considered Monaco Bermuda? I did full reno here in Richmond va 8 weeks ago threw down seed and I have insane dark thick growth. I sod cut out the zoysia to transplant to back yard. Bermuda works so much better from seed than Zoysia. I've tried many types of both but the Monaco sprouted like Rye. It was crazy!
Hi T! keep in mind ryegrass is a cool season grass so the only time you would be able to overseed your bahaia would be in the winter as it will not survive a warm season summer
Thanks cole! sorry they are sold out of these 2 varieties for the season, if you are looking for a good alternative than i can highly recommend the ss900 rye mix from seed superstore, it is DARK.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare thank you for the reply! I am ready to dilute the Kentucky Blue Grass content in my lawn. I have irrigation, but it really bothers me when my entire lawn goes dormant most years despite how much I irrigate
haha good question.. couple of reasons: 1. I dove deep into the concept of minimalism after reading steve jobs biography and man has it helped me streamline my day to day life (wearing the same thing every day without concern of choosing what to wear is a major timesaver that helps me focus on more important tasks) 2. Why this specific shirt? Well these psycho bunny shirts are made from 100% pima cotton (if you never had a shirt made of pima cotton it is a total game changer) and they never fade... like ever. They are pricey but 100% worth the money.
Sup dude! I dont think its too late for you guys, seeding window just closed here last week so you should have a lil bit left to get it down. I watered 3 times a day for 7 min each cycle. However i would be wary overseeding rye into bermuda, i heard its more trouble than its worth but tbh i dont have experience with it so take what i say with a grain of salt
Hey there great video as always. Quick question did you use the annual rye seed for your yard? I see there are 2 choices. I’m from the Midwest definitely seeing this helping out the lawn.
Great video! This is a little off subject but I have spent the last month or two planting rye and fescue due to sun and shade in my yard. Now the squirrels are trying to destroy all my hard work. So many holes that have been dug by them hiding nuts for the winter. Any suggestions on stopping them would be greatly appreciated. I'm in an urban area, so shooting is out.
Hey George another great video! Question though, have you ever had experience with or experimented with Jonathan Green's Black Beauty Ultra Seed? I was looking at putting down sod and this was an option.
Hey Mike! no i havent but ive heard nothing but great things about it and all the pics i see on IG its VERY dark if you dont mind me asking... what makes you want to lay sod instead of seed? the black beauty will be a fairly ease seed to get started
If I fertilized my lawn in the end of august when I did my overseeding project as you suggested back then and my lawn is still super green and going strong still(cool season grass by the way) do you recommend I still apply winter care fertilizer right now? Even though the lawn still looks no sign of turning yellow yet.
@@jedward3 no disease issues as i have a pretty good mix of cultivars aside from the fireball and hatrick. The only concerns are watering related, PRG requires a boatload of water especially during these times but other than that, its PRIMO
Depending on where you are. It can sprout at very low temps and get established in 3 to 4 weeks. If your typical hard freeze is within 4 weeks then yes maybe too late. But if your 6 weeks away then your golden!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Rye is a great quick fix. I use a Sun and Shade mix in the fall after a long hot summer, for my front lawn with dense trees. It gives the lawn a nice pop of dark green while everyone’s lawn in the neighborhood is struggling, or burnt to a crisp after summer. I highly recommend an overseed project every year in the fall, for cool season lawns. It really makes a difference.
honestly jose i would probobly avoid overseeding warm season grass in the winter, ive heard its more trouble than its worth but honestly i dont have experience with it so take what i say with a grain of salt
🔵We've been getting a lot of questions from viewers in the transition zone states such as Missouri, Tennessee, Southern IL, Virginia, North Carolina etc, wondering if perennial ryegrass is a good choice for their lawn and the short answer is no. It will have a hard time surviving the extended hot summers in those states. If you are interested in having a cool season lawn in the transition zone then i recommend looking into either tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass. Thanks for Watching! Please Like & Subscribe!
I know it won't like my summers here in 6b. Just curious if it's pointless or not. Or what pros and cons you may know that would help would be much appreciated.
TTTF germinates rather quickly…. And isn’t a giant wuss like prg. Sure you can’t mow it low but low mowing is for putting greens and tiny boutique yards…. Kind of like yours 😅
I'm here to tell you right now, no matter what these RU-vid videos say, chances are that if your state has an agricultural science university, every other year they will release information on the very best possible grass seed mixes proven for your climate. The local feed and seed stores will stock these seeds and adjust mixes for you based on what you need. The. Best. Possible. You can do all sorts of seed mixes or monograss styles for your yard, but if it's not fit to the climate, you will babying your lawn for the rest of your life. #kappa
your right, always check the ntep trials in your area to see what performs best in your part of the country, big reason i choose to originally choose to seed midnight KBG as it ranked best for the Chicago land area
