Been using these types of picks for years. However, they aren’t adjustable, and hurt your thumb after a while. This one being adjustable would be a great upgrade. Thanks for the heads up, Bill!

Chords Of Orion I use it on my bass. I started with finger style, but there’s some things you can’t do on a bass without a pick. This was my solution when I started getting the non-adjustable ones from the banjo guys. But it kills your thumb right at the hangnail line, which sucks. I always hoped someone would come out with an adjustable one, and here it is!

This week I bought two of these Black Mountain picks and two Fred Kelly Bumblebees. I was an instant convert to the Black Mountains. The Bumblebees don't stay on. A friend tried them both and for him the Bumblebees stayed on & the BMs didn't. Anyway, it's the Black Mountain in medium and heavy thicknesses for me. Easy to use and versatile.

I use a piece of innertube (Bicycle) a tierap and a Dunlop nylon pick. Works great, also for strumming. Cut two little indents in the side of the pick so the tierap does not move. It feels the same for up and downstroke. No getting used to and cheap.

Wrap around thumb picks are great. I use them all the time, but the one problem they pose, is they get on the way of pinch harmonics. It's much easier to do them with the flesh of your thumb. But if you're not into pinch harmonics, I highly recommend thumb picks. I hammer a lot with my index finger, and it's nice not to have to tuck and retrieve the thumb pic when and after I hammer.

I rarely use a pick for ambient guitar. I just let cosmic rays resonate my strings.

I bought a three-pack of these a few months ago and I really like them! They take some getting used to. I wanted to use them for Travis picking on an acoustic guitar, and for that they are excellent. When you want to do regular strumming, there is a small downside: the down-strums are totally normal, but the up-strokes feel odd. You can't tip the pick back for the upstrokes, so they risk digging in too far if you don't twist your wrist each stroke. Kinda odd. But this is a great thumb-pick for acoustic finger-picking! Gotta practice with it for a bit!

There have been standard shield pick / thumbpick hybrids for a while, but I always have to take a lighter to them and relieve some of the pressure in the bend. That this one uses a spring joint is a positive. Regular thumbpicks also don't sound right on the up-stroke unless you file them down quite a bit. I think the price of these is a bit high, but it's something to keep an eye on. I mostly use my index nail as a pick, bracing the forefinger with my thumb as if I were holding a pick. This lets me swap between picking styles pretty easily, but you'll notably thin out your fingernail like that. I could see having a few of these as a backup in case I break the nail. Even though I don't typically like sponsored videos, I think this one was pretty genuine and showed off something I'd actually seek out myself.

Your comment about thinning nails is interesting. I also find that happens with my right index fingernail, not because I use it like you, but rather because of the way I pick. I really like just having a little bit of the point stick out between my thumb and finger to pluck the string, but unfortunately, my fingernail can also scrape the string. Really need to be aware while I play, or it happens.

@@chordsoforion I'm not sure what technique I use. It was born of necessity, being reclusive and going places where there were guitars around to play. There often wasn't a pick available, so I just rolled my thumb around my index finger as if I was holding a pick, and used the edge of my nail as a plectrum. I get the same pick action and attack that people get with a medium pick, but I can quickly jump to finger-and-thumb picking. But, breaking a nail means I'm suddenly afloat without a sail. Picks don't feel right after playing this way for so long, so this could be a good standby in those situations. When I do use a pick, I go for Ernie Ball Prodigy picks. They're the closest I've found to a natural feeling pick. Thick body, angled edge. I keep a few packs of those around too.

I'm very late to this, but I saw a video of a guy using prosthetic nails on top of his real ones from thinning down. Would that help?

@@LEOsoulMonarch Tried that, actually! The glue feels weird to me. Kind of like gluing a pick to myself, frankly. Just wasn't for me. Over the last couple years, however, I've noticed both a developing resilience in my nails and increasing precision. I still use my nails exclusively, and they're pretty rock-solid for my playing now! I'll keep a pick around just in case, but I haven't had to use it. I know the way I go about it isn't for everyone, but I'm someone that never liked being dependent on "extra" stuff, and picks felt like that to me. And, I never had one on me when I was around guitars that were waaaay better than my own, so I just kind of naturally figured out how to not need one. In response, my body started helping out. Thicker nails, tougher skin. I can use them somewhat well as box-cutters if I need!

I use dunlop ultex thumb pick all the time, and it sounds same as usual ultex pick. It's game changer for post rock sound... It helps volume swell, arpeggio, and normal backing or lead play. Give freedom to your other fingers. And dunlop thumb pick is cheap!

Interesting pick, although certainly not life-changing. I really dislike this kind of old-fashioned clickbaiting, to be honest. Apart from that, the price for one pick is ridiculously high, considering that you have to throw it away if it's worn down after some hours of intense guitar playing. I understand that you have to pay a premium for innovation here, but roughly €36 (in the EU) for 6 nylon picks is quite remarkable, in my opinion. Anyway, thank you for the demonstration.

I kind of agree, but it seems like a good alternative to thumb picks. I've tried a whole bunch (because fingerstyle and obviously it's going to make me as good as Tommy Emmanuel *COUGH*) and I just really don't like any of them. This looks promising.

Always good to see you demo something different Bill. Very personal things picks. It took me a good while to find the perfect one for me - Gibson Pure M (indented stamped logo) they're becoming hard to find so I bought enough to see me out. I'd be interested to give this a go but at $20 for a pack of 3 plus shipping to the UK it's a bit of a gamble, so I'll pass.

It works just fine. I don’t know if you could see it, but I was using some up strokes on some the lead stuff that I was playing. I also do bluegrass style alternate picking with it.

I use a thumb pick quite often but the problem I have with them is strumming. They won’t allow a loose enough grip. Any better with this one?

Actually it's a pretty great idea, I think a better example would be to for instance use for open chording on clean and strum once with pick then finger pick the remainder strings and the same for next chords. Do they make it in a thin pick is what I want to know

Agreed that would be a good example too. I decided to stick with a heavier kind of thing for this video, as some of the other demo vids are closer to what you suggest. Also, in regards to thickness, I believe that they are offering just the 1.5mm pick at this point, but definitely reach out to them to confirm.

@@chordsoforion Absolutely! I'm not doing any different! (I mainly play metal and solely use thumbpicks haha) The trick is to angle the pick a bit (just like you would with a hard pick) Sometimes I even filed a pick to round it off a bit more :P
