Fun fact the Maxim is one of if not the single most reliable machine gun designs created, so reliable infact that in the 60's the British army found an old WW1 Vickers gun (A machine gun based on the maxim) in storage and put over 1 million rounds through it without jamming, also many variants of the Maxim remain in military service to this day (they have even been used in the Ukraine war by both sides).

It's probably thee most reliable emplaced machine gun of all time as it has a very simple mechanism and the barrel is constantly kept cool as long as a liquid can draw heat from it. Also be rechambered for practically any round including yes .50cal ammo too. Only really need to beef it up a little and probably install a stronger return spring and it'll fire it

not quite.MG such as maxim or mg08/15 that has water cooling is horrible when fighting at cold climate. the water freezes inside the gun, rendering the entire gun useless. therefore air cooling mg was invented afterwards

1) The (at least alleged) genesis of the gun was someone saying to Maxim at a party, "Would you like to make a whole bunch of money? Find a way for these Europeans to slit each other's throats easier." 2) The British version of the Maxim, the Vickers .303, needed a special dispensation to be accepted by the Army because they didn't know how many rounds it could fire without malfunctioning. The reason? The factory *ran out of ammunition first*. 3) The Maxim design was also able to be scaled up. For instance, the Ordnance QF 1-Pounder Pom-Pom was a 37mm version.

In WWI during protracted firefights, sometimes all of the water would evaporate and if the soldiers had no spare water, they'd pee in the water jacket. It would greatly shorten the life of the weapon, but sometimes needs must. The reason why after WWI nations went with air-cooled machine guns was because they were cheaper to make, weighed less so they were easier to carry and could be set up quicker. There were some air-cooled machine guns during WWI, but they weren't very reliable[cough]the Chauchat[cough]. Then John Moses Browning told someone to hold his beer and derby.

To answer your question about new guns, the Kriss Vector SMG is the closest thing we have to a really unique new design, and that's nearing 20 years old. The bolt (the part that carries, loads, and fires the cartridges) cycles backwards and down into the grip of the gun, making it have almost no recoil.

In the words of the great poet warrior himself: "Said England to the Pharoah, 'I must make a man of you, That will stand tall on his feet and play the game; That will Maxim his oppressors As a Christian ought to do,' And she sent old Pharoah Sergeant Whatshisname." Rudyard Kipling, "Pharoah and the Sergeant"

Also to answer your question from about halfway through "new" guns are typically made/adopted by the military every 30-50 years depending on circumstances, most of the newest modern military guns that are around right now are from Eastern Europe due to them running weapon programs for new service rifles after they joined NATO in the 90's and 2000's, beyond that you occasionally get some innovation from the civilian market or weird and unique stuff from places like South Africa in the 80's and 90's due to the sanctions they had, but in all honesty most modern rifles are typically just AR-18/15 or AK clones since those designs are just good and there has not been any massive technological breakthrough in the core principles of how guns work since smokeless powder and most real advances now are in areas like advanced optics or component lifespan rather than the guns themselves

Yes, he has the Darwins... we are on episode 15, and he promised a new one now that the Texas primary is over. The one thing I worry about when he goes to congress is that it will affect his posting Darwins and Gun Meme Reviews.

We already optimized the shit out of guns. The issue is there are only so many ways you can make a reliable automatic weapon that still uses bullets. Sure we could make many designs that might be better on paper but if they often jamm, or break the benefit won't outweigh the negatives. Most military guns tend to be really reliable and well optimized for what type of battle they are designed for.

To give some context of just how fucking old the Maxim MG is, the initial models used black powder.

“Wait. Some machineguns use gas like gasoline?" Short answer: no I know you're not much of a gun guy, but that was just funny. Might I recommend some of the how a gun works videos here on RU-vid. It's very interesting to see all those mechanical parts work in unison to make a hole way over there.

And so begins the Brandon Herrera react line. At the beginning everyone tunes in for just the guns, but soon you’re just turning up for AK Daddy himself. Hope to see more vids in the future mate, I’d heavily recommend his Darwin Award series alongside his vids on: The Rhodesian FAL The AR180 The Inglorious Bastards Gun The Anti-Aircraft 50.cal The PPSH and DP Macbine Guns The M60 Machine Gun And his series on his own personal gun project the AK50

Thanks for the reaction. His DP-27 is entertaining and informative. Also his Darwin Awards series is worth checking out. Additionally, there's another cool channel - Garand Thumb. His video about KS-23 is chaotic, but captivating. And also his video about AN-94 is worth mentioning, because the gun itself is a fascinating engineering achievement. I better stop right there. Maybe, comments will suggest more stuff

New guns to look at but will look like most other modern weapons. XM-7 rifle and the XM-250 light machine gun. The US Army just signed a 10 year contract that will replace the US army's current armory. The difference? It's a 6.8×51mm round instead of a 5.56x45mm. A far more powerful cartridge with better capabilities punching through body armor at longer ranges.

Wanna know what's even more ridiculous? The original Gatling Gun, yes the "Minigun" was invented and in small numbers used *In the US Civil War in the 1860s!* Yes the Gatling Gun, predates the belt fed machine gun. Seriously look up 1860s Gatling Gun, it's a hand cranked version and ships did use electric motors to fire them upto 2000 rounds per minute I believe from the turn of the 1900s to 1950s when the prototypes of the M134 Gatling gun were made which is a Mini version of rotary canons hence the term *Minigun*

@@RaveSpecterReacts-qr5uy Well the original idea is to have multiple guns that fire, extract, c0ck yes that's a real firearms term, load and chamber a cartridge all in sync. So the faster you spin the gun up? The faster and faster it'll shoot. Gatling Guns are extremely simple things really and having fired one, they're absolutely awesome! 🙂
